#405 - Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper - 1976

running recap for me - 3's=48, 2's=38, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Agents Of Fortune
Written by Donald Roeser
Produced by Murray Krugman, Sandy Pearlman, David Lucas
Chart action: #12 US, #7 Canada, #16 UK

the players:
Eric Bloom – guitar, percussion
Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser – guitar, synthesizer, percussion, lead vocals
Allen Lanier – keyboards, guitar, bass
Joe Bouchard – bass, piano
Albert Bouchard – drums, acoustic guitar, percussion, harmonica

One hit wonder I think. At least I don't remember anything else. Subject is eternal love and
the inevitability of death. Scary stuff. Used in the films, Halloween and The Stand. Stephen
King says the song was the inspiration for the book. Hard to make that connection for me.

Lyrics

All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
(We can be like they are)

Come on baby
(Don't fear the Reaper)
Baby take my hand
(Don't fear the Reaper)
We'll be able to fly
(Don't fear the Reaper)
Baby I'm your man

La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la

Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity
(Romeo and Juliet)

40,000 men and women everyday
(Like Romeo and Juliet)
40,000 men and women everyday
(Redefine happiness)
Another 40,000 coming everyday
(We can be like they are)

Come on baby
(Don't fear the Reaper)
Baby take my hand
(Don't fear the Reaper)
We'll be able to fly
(Don't fear the Reaper)
Baby I'm your man

La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew and then he appeared
(Saying don't be afraid)

Come on baby
(And she had no fear)
And she ran to him
(Then they started to fly)
They looked backward and said goodbye
(She had become like they are)
She had taken his hand
(She had become like they are)

Come on baby
(Don't fear the reaper)

I like Agents of Fortune MH, and you might be right about Don't Fear The Reaper being their only hit on that album, I'd give that song a "**" as well. I like The Revenge of Vera Gemini, I think that's my favorite song on the album.

They had hits with the song Godzilla (didn't like that one too much), and Burnin' For You off the Fire Of Unknown Origin album. This song is pretty good.

I like the band and I'm a little surprised that Don't Fear the Reaper is rated so low!

My favourite of theirs is 'Joan Crawford' from Fire of Unknown Origin.

#404 - Shangri-Las - Remember(Walkin' In The Sand) - 1964

running recap for me - 3's=49, 2's=38, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by George Morton
Produced by George Morton
Chart action: #5 US, #14 UK

the players:
Mary Weiss - lead vocal
Elizabeth Weiss - backing vocal
Marguerite Ganser - backing vocal
Mary Ganser - backing vocal
other people playing things

Always a sucker for the girl bands. The two sets of sister were in high school when hired to record this. Rumour has it that 15 year old Billy Joel played piano. Original version was seven minutes long. Quite a cutback to achieve radio airplay. It was the groups debut single and they would follow it up with an even bigger hit. Most notable cover is Aerosmith's version in 1980.

Lyrics

Seems like the other day
My baby went away
He went away 'cross the sea
It's been two years or so
Since I saw my baby go
And then this letter came for me
It said that we were through
He found somebody new
Oh, let me think, let me think, what can I do?
Oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no

(Remember) walkin' in the sand
(Remember) walkin' hand in hand
(Remember) the night was so exciting
(Remember) smile was so inviting
(Remember) then he touched my cheek
(Remember) with his fingertips
Softly, softly we'd meet with our lips

Whatever happened to
The boy that I once knew?
The boy who said he'd be true
Oh, what will happen to
The life I gave to you?
What will I do with it now?

(Remember) walkin' in the sand
(Remember) walkin' hand in hand
(Remember) the night was so exciting
(Remember) smile was so inviting
(Remember) then he touched my cheek
(Remember) with his fingertips
Softly, softly we'd meet with our lips

#403 - Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling In Love - 1961

running recap for me - 3's=50, 2's=38, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Blue Hawaii
Written by George Weiss, Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore
Produced by Joseph Lilley
Chart action: #2 US, #1 UK

the players:
Elvis Presley - vocal
Jordanaires - backing vocals

One of his 50 signature songs, lol. I was questioning the way RS had the title worded, but
looking at a pic of the actual record, that's what it says, so I stand corrected. An 18th
century Italian tune updated and given to Elvis for the film Blue Hawaii.

Lyrics

Wise men said, "Only fools rush in"
But I can't help falling in love with you

Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you

For I can't help falling in love with you

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-01-2013

obviously "***" from me, the song was added to the movie at the very end of filming to give the powers that be a classy song to sell the movie to fans, also added "rock-a-hula-baby" at the end to give the movie a typical Elvis song...the rest of the soundtrack was nt too bad but no way could any of the others become hits, they were written solely for the purpose of the movie.

#402 - Five Stairsteps - Ooh Child - 1970

running recap for me - 3's=50, 2's=39, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Stairsteps
Written by Stan Vincent
Produced by Stan Vincent
Chart action: #8 US

the players:
Alohe Burke
Keni Burke
Dennis Burke
James Burke
Clarence Burke

Pretty enough, but you can't say much for the lyrics. Chicago brothers and sister sort of like
the Jackson 5. Managed by their daddy, sound familiar? Discovered in a talent show at a local
theater and signed by Curtis Mayfield to his newly formed label. A few other charting singles
on the r&b chart but basically another one hit wonder.

Lyrics

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter

Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll be brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll be brighter

Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter

Some day, yeah

Some day

Some day
When the world is much brighter

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Right now, right now
