Folk musician Tim Hardin died on this day in 1980. He was 39 – yet another casualty of the excesses of the rock n roll lifestyle, or maybe just his own worst enemy, which often seems to happen where there is immense talent/intelligence/creativity involved. That is not to say those things cannot exist without the self-destruct gene – clearly they can, and do! Human nature is an eternal paradox.

He first got a lot of attention with “If I Were a Carpenter", at Woodstock, a song which has since been covered by any number of worthies and then there’s “Reason to Believe” which Rod Stewart has done a good job of putting his stamp on (we won’t discuss Neil Young), but IMHO, nothing beats the original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Hh9whNOGvg.

I recently acquired, on vinyl, his Suite for Susan Moore and Damion: We are One, One, All in One - this is the lead track –

a bit of trivia on the Ricky Nelson plane....
it was originally owned by the Dupont's, they sold it to Jerry Lee Lewis because of its continual mechanical problems,
Jerry Lee off loaded it to Ricky Nelson because it was unreliable and had continual problems,
unfortunately Nelson was unaware of these issues and paid the ultimate price.

Ricky Nelson also had a phobia of planes but he was sick of the uncomfortable travels in 'tour busses', that's why he bought
the plane.

Nelson was only two miles out from landing in Dallas when the plane crashed, seven of the nine people on board died.

I have "city to city" and a compilation "baker street" which covered tracks from his first three albums...
cool artist....

he was originally in a band called Humblebums with Scottish comedian Billy Connolly, they must have been a bit folky because Connolly played banjo.
