Not good. Wales lead 16 - 8 at half time.
= = = = = =

England won 16 - 21. Wales dominated the first half, whereas England were stronger in the second half. Neither team was convincing.

BBC 4 are showing a remastered version of Genesis' Three Sides Live shows from 1982. The standout musicians are Daryl Stuermer, who is exemplary on lead guitar and bass, without being a member of the band, and drummer Chester Thompson who gives them a very full sound, also without being a band member. Both have a jazzrock backround which they bring advantageously to these performances. Strangely, Genesis abandoned Thompson for the Calling All Stations project, and he did not return until the Reunion Tour of 2007.

I did not care for Genesis after Gabriel and Hackett left, but these shows are certainly interesting. On one hand, the sound is very 'bright' for a live show, even from the eighties. On the other, Collins and Thompson drumming together are a wonder to behold; the former sticks to his distinctive fills, while the latter has arms like an octopus. Typically of me, of all the post-Gabriel material, I did like the much-hated Abacab album and the tracks work effectively in the context of this show. Songs from The Trick of the Tail work pretty well too. The seventies magic did not really return until Ray Wilson joined from Stiltskin, but Banks and Rutherford inexplicably abandoned the concept after one album.

Tony Banks was never a showman like Emerson or Wakeman, but his playing is no less scintillating or dramatic. Without a doubt, it is as tasteful as always and utterly compelling. Collins is an adequate lead singer, but less intriguing than Peter Gabriel, and the band miss the heavy rock dynamism of Steve Hackett. The eighties were an ongoing watershed for Genesis, with the progressive and heavy rock being pushed to one side in favour of the commercial and mawkish - but it made them pots of money!

Big Ears Wrote:Wales v England in the Rugby Union Six Nations. There has been a lot of bad feeling as the Welsh wanted the stadium roof closed, to keep in the noise of the home crowd, although it is a clear night and the roof should be open. As far as I can tell it's half open.

sorry BigEars...
im just not a fan of either Rugby code(League or Union), am not a fan of US Football neither...
im into my cricket...
ive lost touch with the EPL over the last few years also but still read the results and i still like to see Arsenal do well,
im still a big fan of Theo Walcott.

Big Ears ...I agree, I prefer Genesis with Peter Gabriel, entirely different band after he left! I was fascinated with the older Genesis and have five albums by them!

I am not a huge rugby fan either but I do enjoy the World Cup and always hope for England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales. Canada has become a respectable team as of late and of course I pull for them above all! As for Arsenal, Crazy mate, I admire them because I don't think they've ever been relegated! I remember Walcott, fast and creative! I am a die hard Chelsea fan since 1966 long before they became world beaters!

I do not understand cricket entirely but I enjoy watching it. The game goes on for days???..and not sure about hitting the wickets behind the batter...is he out if the bowler hits a wicket? Baseball is a hybrid of cricket in a lot of ways. The Aussies have a decent national baseball team, and a couple of Aussies pitched in the US Major Leagues over the years!

The one sport I love to watch is tennis! I have no idea when it comes to the serve and the scoring at times! I know the 15 love, 30 love thing but why does one player serve continually over and over?...etc...

Daryl Stuermer has brought class, style and a high degree of professionalism to every project/band ever: http://www.darylstuermer.com/

Not an uncommon phenomenon--sometimes it's deeply resented, sometimes it's warmly embraced (the Doobie Brothers before/after Michael McDonald joined them and any number of jazz or Blues groups revitalized or deflated by one guy joining or leaving). It was particularly resonant and immediate with Genesis.

CH you surprise me not being into rugby, as the southern hemisphere are always the threat to us - in both codes. I like cricket too. We had a spell of Australian rules football being showed here and I loved it, but we don't get it in any more. Walcott was a very promising young player at Southampton, but was sold to Arsenal almost straight away.

Steve - As you say, Genesis were two different bands and you can't go far wrong with the early albums. Canada had a very good rugby union team with, I think, Gareth Rees, who was born to Welsh ex-patriots and played for top English clubs. But, would I be right in assuming ice-hockey is the Canadian priority? Yes, the batsman in cricket is out if the bowler hits the wicket or if the batsman is caught out. Matches do take days, but the limited overs cricket (much faster) is becoming popular, except with the purists. In tennis, the players take it in turns to serve for a game, which is part of a set. Men can play up to five sets in a match (women three).

jazzbo - Michael MacDonald is an interesting example. I always liked his voice, but never really liked him with anyone. Sometimes you get good singers who sing the wrong material, but that's another thread.

Rugby is really only popular in two States here...Queensland and NSW, although it is played in all States...
Cricket,Aussie Rules Football and Football(soccer) are more popular

Rugby gets more coverage and a higher profile though through Russell Crowe's involvement in the sport.

^ That really surprises me. For a while the Wallabies and David Campese were the best team and player in the world. I liked Campese's attitude of not letting anyone intimidate him.
