CLINT BLACK - Killin' Time (1989)

Excellent debut album from Clint Black that I purchased over twenyty years ago. Clint has been labelled as a swing country artist and I can hear shades of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys on the album. I also am fond of the dobro/steel guitar sound so this album is one of my favorites.

The only downside of this album is that it is only 30 minutes long.

THE BAND PERRY - The Band Perry

This is The Band Perry's debut album from 2010. I like this band....traditional country mixed with a contemporary country sound. Their music has been described as "backporch country".

Review from All Music

The Band Perry - The Band Perry

Release Date Oct 12, 2010

After the success of their first two singles -- "If I Die Young" and "Hip to My Heart," the Band Perry issued a self-titled teaser: a five-track EP that featured a different mix of the latter track. This is confusing, given that it's also the title of their debut album. This is especially true since everything about the group -- Kimberly Perry (lead vocals, guitar, and piano), Reid Perry (bass guitar), and Neil Perry (drums, mandolin, and accordion) -- is so carefully crafted by management, from their look and public image as a family group to their production and presentation (in other words, everything but their considerable talent for writing hooky, rootsy, country-pop songs). Ultimately, it's the latter that matters most. The Perrys wrote or co-wrote the vast majority of what's here. All five tracks from the EP are included on the album (the original mix of "Hip to My Heart" is here, rather than the video mix) along with six others. The meld of acoustic guitars, mandolins, accordion, and piano is added to considerably, with strings, big kick drums, pedal steel, and of course, fiddle. The songs here are carefully crafted; there isn't an extra word, chorus, or beat. The guitar solos are all in the right places, and all the electric instruments take a back seat to the acoustic ones. Stand-out tracks include the two singles, the angry, damning heartbreak song "Postcards from Paris," and "Independence," with its anthemic chorus and Kimberly Perry's passionate vocal chock-full of determination. The bluesy little rocker "Double Heart" is uncharacteristic of the rest of the set, and may be its best, most unguarded cut. There is no doubt that the Band Perry fits 2010's contemporary country radio and video format. Despite their obvious gifts for writing, singing, and arranging, the album is prone to some overly glossy mistakes. It will be interesting to see how they mature with album number two.

Unusual greatest hits album. Liner notes say when John was approached by the label to do it, he asked that he ber
permitted to redo the tracks, as he felt he was in better form now. Surprised he got the approval for that. Songs
are not really much different. Some are not noticeable other than by the trained ear (mine). A string section on
some tracks is the most obvious change. As expected, I prefer the originals, but I think only one track scored lower
due to the remake. Sunshine On My Shoulder just doesn't sound right here. These songs are from John's first six
albums and most were not really hits. Best Of would have been a more appropriate title in this case. The album went
to #1 here and is John Denver's best selling album going 9x platinum.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - The Eagle And The Hawk

Best Track - Rocky Mountain High

He was born in the summer of his 27th year,
coming home to a place he'd never been before.
He left yesterday behind him
you might say he was born again,
might say he found a key for every door.
When he first came to the mountains
His life was far away
on the road and hanging by a song.
But the strings already broken
and he doesn't really care,
it keeps changin' fast, and it don't last for long.
It's a Colorado Rocky Mountain High,
I've seen it raining fire in the sky
The shadows from the starlight are softer than a lullabye.
Rocky Mountain High, ...in Colorado....
Rocky Mountain High.

He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below,
saw everything as far as you can see.
And they say that he got crazy once and that he
tried to touch the sun,
and he lost a friend, but kept the memory.
Now he walks in quiet solitude, the forest and the stream,
seeking grace in every step he takes,
his sight is turned inside himself, to try and
understand, the serenity of a clear blue mountain lake.

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain High,
I've seen it raining fire in the sky
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply.
Rocky Mountain High, ....in Colorado....
Rocky Mountain High.

Now his life is full of wonder,
but his heart still knows some fear,
of the simple things he can not comprehend.
Why they try to tear the mountains down
to bring in a couple more.
More people, more scars upon the land.

It's the Colorado Rocky Mountain High,
I've seen it raining fire in the sky
I know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an Eagle fly
Rocky mountain high
It's the Colorado Rocky Mountain High,
I've seen it raining fire in the sky.
Friend around the camp fire and everybody's high....
Rocky Mountain High, Rocky Mountain High,
Rocky Mountain High,
Rocky Mountain High.

The only thing I have by Johnny and just recently purchased it from the Wal-Mart discount bin. Originally released
in 1961, surprised that track listing was released on cd in 1987. Guess it covers anything worthy. Wasn't around
that along, dead at 35, victim of a drunk driver. First album was in 1957 and that happened in 1960. Surprised he's
as well known as he is with that short of a career. One big hit will do it though and that came with Battle Of New
Orleans in 1959, along with North To Alaska and When It's Springtime In Alaska, all #1 country hits. Must have had a
thing for Alaska. Wonder if he could see Russia from there. Four love tracks for me here. Those first two plus The
Mansion You Stole and All For The Love Of A Girl. Nothing I didn't like giving this a high like score. Have to
wonder how well Johnny could have done had he been with us longer.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Comanche (The Brave Horse)

Best Track - The Battle Of New Orleans

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin' on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We looked down the river and we see'd the British come.
And there must have been a hundred of'em beatin' on the drum.
They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring.
We stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin' on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked 'em in the eye
We held our fire 'til we see'd their faces well.
Then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave 'em ... well

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin' on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.**

We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down.
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.

Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

gotta love Johnny Horton man....introduced to his music by my dad when i was real young, loved him ever since...then got a Johnny Cash autobiography and his name is splashed throughout it...was a close friend of The Cashman, they used to arrange their mid sixties tours together for Alaska, spending days driving through the wilderness....!

incidently, i have Johnny Cash doing tracks....1,3,6,8 and 11 also! all good versions but obviously Hortons originals are the best...
