my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 16-10-2013

DON McLEAN "vincent" b/w "dreidel" 1972

The don's finest song IMO..."vincent" is about Vincent Van Gough(the painter)
great images happening here in the lyrics...
"b' side, i just found out that this track was released in its own right as an "A' side in 1973, not sure if its the same version or newly recorded??, but i love that one also...
single only reached #3 here, deserved to be a #1 hit but it doesnt matter, its still a rock classic IMO

GOANNA "common ground" b/w "oceania(instrumental)" 1984

these guys were an aussie leftist group...most of their stuff deals with the sort of issues Amnesty,Greenpeace,Human Rights people would believe in...
i like the "a' side, its pretty good, the "b' side, nothing special about this instrumental
single only got to #42 on the charts here...

STEVIE WONDER "i just called to say i love you" b/w "i just called to say i love you(instrumental)" 1984

one of Stevie's best songs IMO...love the wordplay as he goes through the months of the year to express his love for the recipiant of the song...
believe it or not, the "b' side instrumental version is pretty good also, its just the same as the vocal version but without the vocals, but i just love the music within
single was a worldwide #1 hit and it was a #1 here also!

LEVEL 42 "the sun goes down" b/w "cant walk you home/as years go by" 1983

another 12" single, this time from this UK,pop/soul/new-wave/funky group...
"a" side is the full length version of this pretty good single...
"b' side is pretty good also...
single failed to chart here but i like it

MUSICAL YOUTH "tell me why?" b/w "heartbreaker(dance mix)" & "tell me why?(radio edit)" 1983

another 12" single from the box...
London reggae outfit, average age of band was around 13 at the time...
"a' side is a pleasant enough song, all six minutes of it, prefer it over the radio friendly length version on the "b' side...
"b" side track Heartbreaker was an "A' side in its own right, but it is also on the back of this one to probably help boost sales maybe??
single failed to chart here, i guess it didnt match that 'pass the dutchie' single so people didnt buy it!

UB-40 "here i am(come and take me)" b/w "crisis" 1990

what UB-40 do well is their rendition of old songs and this "a' side is no different..they are able to put their own stamp on their covers!
"b" side is a rarity for me, as i generally dont like their "b' sides, theyre either crappy instrumentals or instrumental versions of the "a' sides, but this one is different,
it is still their style of reggae but with a rap twist happening also and it works well!
single was their last chart entry down this way and it only peaked at #82..deserved better IMO

DURAN DURAN "new moon on monday" b/w "tiger tiger" 1983

i love this "a' side, yet it didnt sell very well out here for some reason, strange really, because these guys were still the biggest band on the planet when this one came out..
"b' side is a typical piece of Duran Duran "b' side crap!
single only peaked at #48 here???!

FRANK IFIELD "i remember you" b/w "i listen to my heart" 1962

Aussie crooner/country guy from the early to mid 1960s...
this was his best "a' side IMO..."b' side runis a bit more uptempo and is pretty good also.
ive always thought of Frank to be similar in vein to "gentleman" Jim Reeves, vocally and song wise
this single made it to #1 in the UK, making Frank only the second Aussie to reach the top of the charts over there(Slim Dusty was the first with "pub with no beer")
this single spent ten weeks at #1 here and remained in the charts for some 49 weeks!

THE TIMELORDS "doctorin' the tardis" b/w "doctorin' the tardis(minimal version)" 1988

a novelty single...a play on the old sci-fi series Dr.Who, single contains samples of the theme music, duplicat Dalek voices and a chorus ripped straight out of Gary Glitter's "rock and roll pts 1+2"...with a kooky video, this all adds up to a jovial piecs of fun..
"b" side is the same song but with less music, it is crap!
single reached #1 in the UK and #2 here, well, with Dr.Who being the most successful sci-fi series ever(even moreso that Star Trek!), its no wonder it sold so well.

THE SMITHS "what difference does it make?" b/w "back to the old house" 1984

very good single from Marr/Morrissey and Co...
probably my favourite Smiths song ever...
"b' side is typical Smiths stuff also, i guess you either like or loathe these guys,me, i still cant make up my mind!
single failed to chart here...
