ELVIS COSTELLO "secret, profane and sugarcane" cd, 2009.

umpteenth album from Elvis, and certainly more consistant in quality than most of the albums by the other other guy called Elvis!
this one sees Elvis releasing a very country/folky type album for the first time since the early 1980s "almost blue" set...and like that one this is another cracker of an album IMO.
recorded in Nashville over three days with some of country musics best session men, also "i felt the chill" was co-written with none other than the queen of country....Loretta Lynn.
not much to say other than lyrically it is up there with the best Elvis compositions, musically it is tight and in places sophisticate, vocally he is in fine form...yet again!,
pretty hard to knock anything this guy records as he has the ability to turn shit to gold when he is in the room!
i cannot even begin to say which song is the worst here as all the "**'s" are on equal par, as are the "***'s", but if i had to pick one to sum up the album it would be "sulphur to sugarcane".
also, sorry about the lack of links for this one...highly unusual for an Elvis Costello album!!!!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

you know me...a big fan of Elvis(well both of 'em actually LOL)...this one though is one of his best, and to be able to say an artist has one of his best albums this late in his career is outstanding by anyones efforts(much like Neil's Prairie Wind set for qulaity material IMO)

Keep expecting Jerry Lee to pass on, along with many others. He's 76 and looked terrible the last time I saw him,
and that was a few years ago. He could still bang them keys though his voice was shot. Nothing out there on this
album, around his 30th. Not one of his best selling, only reaching #18 on the country chart. Singles of Let's Put
It Back Together Again (#6) and The Closest Thing To You (#27). The album works for me just reaching that love
rating. Five love tracks and six likes. The killer rocks on, on a few tracks, but most are straight up country. The
class that the title refers to I assume is the addition of a string section on a lot of them. That #8 chart peak
was the highest Jerry would reach with his solo albums, for the remainder of his career. He's still trying though,
with one as recent as 2010. Carry on Jerry Lee.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Only Love Can Get You In My Door

Best Track - No One Wil Ever Know

No one will ever know my heart is breaking
Although a million tears start to flow
I'll cry myself to sleep and wake up smiling
I'll miss you, but no one will ever know

I'll tell them we grew tired of each other
And realize our dreams could never be
I'll even make believe I never loved you
Then no one will ever know the truth but me

No one will ever know how much I'm pining
Each time the past comes back to haunt me so
No one will ever see the tears I'm hiding
You've hurt me, but no one will ever know

I'll tell them I've found true love with another
That I was glad the day you set me free
I'll even make believe I never loved you
Then no one will ever know the truth, but me

Original Dubliners-Dubliners

A wonderful two disc set, running the gauntlet through the Irish song book, giving new life to these old tunes. Absolutely essential

JOHNNY CASH "orange blossom special" cd, 1965 #49 US, #3 US country charts.

John was heavily into drugs and drink around 1965,his career was on the downward spiral(like his personal life), he would not resurface until the Folsom/San Quentin albums at the end of the decade, thus there is no sparkle in his voice on this one, he is drained of a lack of conviction IMO.
three Dylan tracks on here: It Aint Me Babe, Dont Think Twice,Its Alright, and Mama You Been On My Mind, the last one was recorded by Cash before Dylan laid it down on tape.
elsewhere, covers of Johnny Horton's classic "springtime in alaska", Carter Family's "wildwood flower", two traditional songs "danny boy"(which i dislike whoever does it!), and "amen"(terrible version, well, the gospel chior are good,JC sucks!, and impossible to go past The Impressions version IMO).
tracks 1,2 and 4 are totally inferior to the prison concert albums just three/four years down the way.
best track here is the spiritual number "all God's children aint free" and even that only gets "**". three bonus tracks on the cd version as opposed to the vinyl one, one track is ok, one bad, and an 'alternative version" of track 7(why the hell do they do this on his cd reissue albums??!!).
all up, not a very good album by any means for the Cashman...and thats coming from a big fan!
