Well the kids,grandkids,husbands,wives and boyfiriends have gone. A huge feast of turkey, ham, desserts and all the trimmings prepared by my lovely wife and I. All the presents opened ...three books for me Bob Dylan in Song, Love Me Do by the Fab 4 and the DVD/Book biography of the gorgeous bombshell Marilyn Monroe. Also 60 bucks worth of music gift cards. I'll hold off on buying something for awhile.
I think I'll settle in to some laid back jazz..Christmas carolled out...lol...All the best in the New Year to all of my friends at Music Discussion!

May I make a suggestion for a music purchase. If you don't already have it, Mark Knopfler's 'Screenplaying' is a fantastic album. Always play this over Xmas. What I would call a laid back epic. A simple, beautiful masterpiece.

DION & THE BELMONTS "the best of..." cd,1996.
my dad loved these guys back in the day and 'the wanderer' is still one of his favourite songs of all time....
so with him loving them i sort of grew up listening to them a fair bit....nowadays though, im not that keen on them...they sound dull,flat and the songs for the most part just seem to go nowhere fast, especially the Doo-Wop ones which are lame,boring pieces of crap IMO...
they only really made a couple of true early 1950s/1960s rock tracks IMO, and those are the only two on here that get top marks from me..."runaround sue" and "the wanderer" are those tracks....and those two tracks alone encompass everything that rock and roll was back then...
pretty close to half the tracks here just dont make the grade for me so this one barely scrapes through as an album i like....another artist from that period i find to be overrated and relying on the strength of a couple of songs to create a legend is Del Shannon and his best of set is currently near the top of my 'to play' stack and it will be interesting to see if he scores any better than Dion....

DEL SHANNON "greatest hits" cd,1997.
ok, next one out of the pile is Del Shannon....
another of those artists that really didnt make it huge but did leave us with a couple of great R+R songs...."runaway" was the obvious worldwide hit hitting the top spot in the US,UK and here in Australia...
Del only had four top10 hits in his homeland,was more popular in the UK with eight top10's, but i guess he was more popular here in Oz scoring three #1 hits(runaway, the swiss maid & little town flirt), he also managed two #2 hits here(hats off to larry & keep searchin')...
interesting notes from 'allmusic.com' is that he was the first US artist to make the billboard charts with a lennon/mccartney song, 'from me to you' was a minor hit(#77), he is also credited with having the first chart hit that encompassed the use of a synthesiser in the solo..."runaway"...
yeh, i like this album a bit more than the Dion one above because there is more variation in the styles used, shame he only had three or four years of chart success, i feel as though he really did have more to offer music than the charts show...but hey, who didnt suffer when the Beatles exploded on to the scene!
