THE MASTERS APPRENTICES "the very best of..." cd,1988.

bits of blues rock, prog, folky, psychadelia in the mix here..
one of Australias most respected bands from the late 1960s to mid 1970s...influencing almost everyone from AC/DC,INXS,Jet,Cold Chisel etc etc...
good strong catchy tunes for the most part, with nine of the fifteen tracks getting a "love" rating from me, would be well worth a listen to a few tracks from you guys.
pretty tough to declare a 'favourite track' here, i ended up narrowing it down to "turn up the radio" and the superb ballad "because i love you", ended up with the ballad this time..
great, great best of set from a great band IMO

What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 11-12-2012

Bob Dylan - Live at Budokan - just love that version of 'Shelter From the Storm'. Awesome. The critics hammered this album. Oh well, they've never built a statue for a critic yet......

The groups fourth album. Don't think any of them held up as an album. A singles band for me. Liar (#7) and
Joy To The World (#1) were two of those from here, both getting a love score. One Man Band (#19) was
another single. Three tracks I don't care for, which gives it a medium like. They had to throw in a crappy
instruental. Different album cover on my regular sites, so I went to reliable Amazon for mine. Other one
must be a re-issue. The group was never one for original material, with that instrumental being the only
one on here. Not that their hits were well known by other artists. Hoyt Axton penned the classic Joy To
The World. Other known writers here are Thomas Jefferson Kaye (Steppenwolf), Paul Rodgers, Steve Winwood,
Jesse Colin Young and Gary Wright. The album hit #14 on the chart here.

Tremendous vocalist in Annie Haslam, but the group never got respect in the sales department. Just now
seeing that the group was founded by ex-Yardbird members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty. They departed after
two albums but the group carried on. This is their eighth album and got them their first top 10 hit in the
UK, with my only love track here, Northern Lights. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra provides the beef
here. I guess the classical feel is what made me a fan. Not often you got that mix back then. Punk was in
it's embryonic stage round this time and would soon sweep music like this to the curb. This is the last
album I have by the band but they hung in there for three more never cracking the market. This was their
highest charting album in the UK at #35 with a #58 in the states.

Blues/rock is not high on my list, but then there are always exceptions. Johnny Winter was always one of
them. Progressive Blues Experiment blew me away in 1968. Don't think he ever matched that but this fourth
album comes close. More rock than blues on this one. The title was the name of his band at the time. Glad
that didn't last long. Rick Derringer and his McCoys partners had joined the group and contributed his
classic Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo. Another stupid title, but it sure sounded good. Rick would have a hit
with that on his own in 1973, but Johnny did it just as good, maybe better, as he gave it that growl.
Another new fact for me, Lou Reed is listed as co-author of that song. Two other love tracks nearly push
the album to a love mark. It would be the lowest selling of his first four, at #154, but would be followed
up by his best selling Still Alive And Well three years later.
