DR.DRE "2001" cd,1999.

why the hell did i buy this piece of crap?...i dunno, but ive got a feeling it may hve been solely on the fact that Dre produced the early Eminem albums and i was in awe of "the marshall mathers lp" when it came out...had heard of Dre back in the late 1980s but never bothered listening to rap till Eminem came along, and he did and i bought this in 2001.
22 tracks here, 20 of which are all about "hoes, bitches, whores, niggers, toting pistols, f#therf#ckers" and those stupid "im a whip yo ass nigga" type lyrics...this album along with 99% of rap albums do nothing to bring rap/hip hop to the mainstream, and if they cant do that at least tempt listeners in with some witty comments, like Eminem did on his "slim shady lp".
Dre may be a 'great' record producer and producer of catchy beats but as a rapper he sucks big time!,
the only two songs on here i like are "the next episode" which features Snoop Dogg, and "forget about dre" which features a scrawny white guy who not long after this album ws about to "stand up" on his own two feet.
so 20 dislikes, one like and one love equals 1.1 here, shame on you Dre, thinking you might need to go and see The Dr!!!!

Don't Give Up On Me-Solomon Burke

Maybe it's just reverse ageism, but it's hard for me to believe this old soul man was capable of so much emotion at such a ripened age. Surely one of the greatest soul albums ever made

cant knock any of those old "atlantic/stax" artists man...they are all full of raw emotion...Wilson Picket,Otis Redding, Solomon,Floyd Kramer, etc the list just goes on and on....

WILSON PICKETT "in the midnight hour" cd,original album release 1965. #107 US

about time my soul material made an appearance here...have five of Wilson's studio albums plus a best of set.
man oh man!....Wilson and Otis, cant knock 'em man, theyre my two favourite soul singers from the 1960s, so this one is going to almost certainly get a love score here...
anyway,
this is Pickett's third or fourth album(i have this one and the four studio albums that followed it[from memory])...
gotta love the raw feel of the music and his vocals...much better than the sweetness of Motown, not that theres much wrong with Motown in the same period though, love them also.
in his latter years in the 1980s Wilson got in a load of trouble with the law...firearms possession, road rage, threatening the Mayor of New Jersey with a firearm, assault charges, even spent a year in jail for one of those convictions...
was inducted into the 'hall of fame' in 1984.
spent the best part of his last decade and a bit(until his death in 2006) living in Louiseville,Kentucky where he is buried...

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

OTIS REDDING "pain in my heart" cd, original album released in 1964. #103 US, #28 UK.

wow!...my other favourite soul singer comes out the same day as Wilson, so having a real nice day right now!
this is Otis' debut set from 1964, numerous covers on this one and the only ones that get "***" from me are his self penned ones(except for "hey hey babe" which still gets "**").
i guess the good thing about Otis is that whenever he covered other peoples songs he did try to make them his own and not simply copying them note for note, but by doing that they sometimes dont work the way he inteded them to IMO...and Stand By Me is one of those...IMO Lennon's version from 1975 is the best version out there followed by the original Ben E's one.
certainly not a great album but a great vocalist all the same as he puts his heart and soul into everything he sings...its such a shame he died tragically so young and a shame that he is remembered for "dock of the bay"(his only real big hit single) rather than some of the real emotive soul music that he did make throughout his short but brilliant career.
this one doesnt get as high a mark as Wilson Pickett's album posted above, but nonetheless, Otis Redding ranks up there with him as one of the greatest soul singers ever IMO.

A gift from a mate. New one for me. California native, started as a rapper, turned soul/r&b/funk on this second
solo outing. Six albums released as a duo Stowaway while spending time in Europe. Worked with French group Jazz
Liberatorz, and some of those jazz influences comes through here. Unique sound that's hard to compare to, which is
which is good. If I have to, Bill Withers/Al Green/Curtis Mayfield. Seems to have spent most of his career in
Europe, where this album charted at #8 in the U.K. Could only manage a #41 on the R&B chart here. Leadoff track of
I Need A Dollar was a #2 single in England and is the theme song for the HBO series How To Make It In America.
Don't get HBO so I've never seen that. Follow up singles of Green Lights and Loving You Is Killing Me. Cover of
VU's Femme Fatale was a strange one, but it worked. Best and the only standout for me is Miss Fortune. Three I
didn't care for at all with the closer instrumental Politician at the bottom. Not a bad album overall. Any r&b
without all that vibratto stuff works for me.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Politician

Best Track - Miss Fortune

I met a girl by the name of Miss Fortune
Her dady was a very rich man
He told me with sympathy: take caution
If you wanna take my little girl's hand
See money that I have might be good for something
.. to another
And little Miss Fortune is short to become
Unfortunately just like her mother

I've seen her back when I was young and dumb
I had a choice
Before me and mama Fortune got wed
Between riding a bus or driving a new Rolls Royce yeah
And I decided what I wanted was the ....
But the problem we're having in everything you want
Is you never really know what you need
Now Miss Fortune is as poor as little Debbie Toung
And it's my fault so I suggest you take my heal/heat

So you met my little girl Miss Fortune
And you know that I'm a very rich man
I told you to preceed with caution
If you wanna take my little girl's hand
See money that I have might be good for something
.... To another
And little Miss Fortune was short to become
Unfortunately just like her mother

Well I thanked Miss Fortune's father
Said I understand
But you're trying to talk me down
Yes you are
Listen here:
You ain't have to bother
‘Cause I'm a real strong man
I'm sure I can turn your daughter around
See what she needs is someone who can take control
Let the girl know her place and how to play her role
Tell her all the money in the world cannot please her sole
What she needs is stop acting like twelve years old

When I put the ring on her finger
Everything started to change
And I looked at myself in the mirror
You know I was looking strange
She asked me out every day spending money
No cars were ever big as theirs
See I forget what life was all about
Little Miss Fortune was to blame

So I married this girl Miss Fortune
Her father was a very rich man
And even though he told me take caution
If I would took he's little girl's hand
See money don't do everybody the same
.... to a brother
And little Miss Fortune was short to become
Unfortunately just like her mother

You gotta watch out for Miss Fortune
But you must proceed with caution
Don't let little lady look pass you by
.... give the race a try

All I wanted was a little dance with Lady Luck
But she won't give me a chance
What I could use was a little grace
But she refuses to show her face

And all I wanted was a little dance with Lady Luck
But she won't give me a chance
What I could use was a little grace
But she refuses to show her face
Miss Fortune Miss Fortune
