Derek Trucks was born on this day in 1979 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Guitarist and songwriter, he was a child prodigy, performing from the age of nine with some of rock’s elite. Before the age of twenty, he’d shared the stage with Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh and Stephen Stills. He’s been with The Allman Brothers, his own Derek Trucks Band, Tedeschi Trucks with wife Susan, and in collaborations with Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton, to drop some big names.

I like the Derek Trucks Band’s mashup of sounds – seems very open and creative to me, this fusion of east meets west, blues, rock, jazz, soul, funk, afro-beat and even gospel – makes for interesting listening!

Whilst known as a jam band, their album Songlines was recorded in studio and is not impromptu. It was inspired by the aboriginal creation myths where the world was sung into being; life and form was breathed into objects by giving them a name and a song. This is not a ‘creation’ concept album per se, but it IS their creation – their take on things, even when they’re covers, and that’s the point … (I think!). Cool album, IMHO …

Their rendition of Sahib Teri Bandi -

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:1960, Mick Hucknall,
that makes him 55
singer, songwriter, Simply Red, (1986 US No.1 & UK No.2 single 'Holding Back The Years', 1995 UK No.1 single 'Fairground' and 1991 UK No.8 single 'Stars', world-wide No.1 1991 album 'Stars').
Simply red have a new album out also.

here's one of my favourite Simply Red tracks....

I can't imagine not liking anything Mr. Hucknall is involved in. His voice got me from the git-go. I don't squander chances so:

on the Hucknall .....
several years ago The Faces were reforming for a UK tour.....
Rod stewart's vocals couldnt stand up to full shows of r+r so the band 'let him go'....
Paul Weller was then asked to fill in on vocals, he declined, too busy with his own upcoming tour....
Mick Hucknall was then asked, he took on the role superbly from all reports and The Faces had a hugely successful tour of the UK....

Simply Red's "if you dont know my by now" is superior to the original IMO, and i love the original.

i think i have their first five studio albums....awesome band, great musicians, production, fantastic lyrics and vocals and very good cover art on their albums....

It always amazes and gratifies me that 1st-tier stars will take on jobs like these. It speaks to their character, and the strength of the songs and the band they work with. It doesn't always work (Queen needed Freddie's operatism; Paul Rodgers just didn't do) but when it does, well, sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Roy Harper was born on this day in 1941, in Manchester, England.
[h=2]From Allmusic - Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny [/h]“An idiosyncratic British singer/songwriter acclaimed for his deeply personal, poetic lyrics and unique guitar work, …. As a teen he tenured with De Boys, his brothers' skiffle band, before leaving home at the age of 15 to enter the Royal Air Force; he subsequently secured a discharge by faking insanity, resulting in a short stay in a mental institution (where he was the subject of an ECT treatment). His rebellious attitude eventually led to him spending a few months in prison. Harper later drifted throughout Europe, and by 1965 was a mainstay of London's Les Cousins folk club, performing alongside the likes of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake.”

From his acclaimed album Stormcock, on which Jimmy Page is credited as S. Flavius Mercurius (due to matters contractual …) and Alan Parsons is just one of at least three sound engineers – good stuff ….

Happy Birthday David Gray! He is 47 today, and coincidentally^, another Mancunian.

Indie folk/rock singer songwriter who gives us his very own distinctive and eclectic sonic stylings – love his sounds, (which have definitely evolved as he’s gone along) and his intelligent lyrics. He first came to prominent notice with his White Ladder album – a great set of songs, it will probably always be a favourite – as is Life in Slow Motion and his latest, Mutineers.

Rod Argent was born on this day in 1945. There’s been a bit of discussion around him here lately. Instrumental in forming The Zombies along with Colin Blunstone and for writing “She’s Not There”, “The Time of the Season”, and “Tell Her No”. His later credits as a composer/producer/piano/organ player are waaay too numerous to mention which is quite incredible considering that two years of piano lessons represent the sum of his formal tuition. Amazing!

Two that stand out for me are Tanita Tikaram’s debut, Ancient Heart which was recorded and produced by Rod at his Red House Studios - he contributed keys on that as well, and ditto for Joshus Kadison’s Painted Desert Serenade. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/rod-argent-mn0000291826/credits (from Paul Weller, to Eminem, to Andrew Lloyd Webber – crazy)

The group Argent came after the Zombies (who have re-formed and are still going strong and are thankfully still doing that with aplomb, instead of failing miserably as some do who are trying to resuscitate a flagging career and really shouldn’t be … ).

Anyway – God Gave Rock n Roll to Argent, apparently – in the form of the lovely Russ Ballard, who wrote it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsG5V-o6uxY
And the wonderful happy Zombies with one of their latest ones (really – they all look so cheerful in their press mugshots! Lol!) –
