What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-11-2012

JERRY LEE LEWIS "rock and roll legend" cd,2008.

not the same cover as mine, but the only one available at amazon.com...my tracklisting is slightly different and includes more tracks also...i dunno, maybe its a totally different release to mine???
anyway, these tracks, from the self-proclaimed 'kingof r+r","the killer" etc etc, all date back to his early days, none of which are later than 1959, so that means they are all 'sun records' then...
this contains all the hits from that period plus, i guess, b-sides and other album tracks????
am surprised this one came out as high as it did in the rating at the end as i always though Chuck,Fats,Little Richard and Elvis were superior to Jerry Lee, guessing im wrong there then.
lots of what i'd call covers on here, but sometimes its hard to tell if they are covers or the original versions of tracks as a few of the sun records guys did record these tracks also at some point...only two tracks here i dont like...no-one but no-one does better versions of "hound dog" or "good golly miss molly" than Elvis or Little Richard respectively..
a very good album of high energy r+r from one of the most controversial, most loved and also most hated guys from the 1950s.....

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

After Fleetwood Mac peaked in the mid 80's, it was time for the members to see what they could accomplish
as a solo act. A term I loathe, as in most cases it's not true. The group had not disbanded, just a break.
There were no more heights they could reach as a group. This is Lindsey's first foray into that solo
arena. As with the other group members, they turned up on each others albums, Christine and Mick both
appearing on tracks here. Trouble was the single that drove the album sales here. Not my favorite, but a
good song. Favorite goes to a cover which I had not heard prior to this, It Was I. The only track that
gets a love mark. Overall not a great album for me, just reaching a like status. Seven of the eleven
tracks are originals and most seem rather weak on the lyrics side. That single of Trouble reached #9 on
the chart here and #31 in the UK, with the album peaking at #32 here.

Joe's second album and his highest charting at a dismal #60. Such an under rated artist. This one didn't
come out as high for me as his debut, but still a damn good album with four love tracks. What drug it down
was two tracks that seem like filler. One with the same line over and over and another with just a bunch
of talking in the background, ending with Joe making a phone call to the White House to compliment
President Nixon. It was pre-Watergate so he's excused. Three singles were released, all of which are love
tracks for me. Walk A Mile In My Shoes was the highest charting of those at #12 here and #10 in Canada.
Best for me is the title track which made it to #41 here. The other was Children at #51. The other love
track is the leadoff Clock Up On The Wall. Joe recently passed away never receiving the recognition he
deserved.

What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 14-11-2012

Barclay James Harvest - Ring of Changes - quite a bland album really, but for some or other reason I can't get it out of my head. (I must be bland). Like the one about the horses in Portugal - or is it Spain? Can't remember. Bought the CD yesterday. used to have it about a zillion years ago when I was young and naive. Now I am old and naive.......

picked this one up the other week at Corey's,never heard of them but Dani had...and likes 'em, i guess i do now and am going to explore their back caqtalogue further given the time and money to do so, probably my favourite 'new-old' band since Jerome pushed me to the Jethro Tull side of life!!!!
fourth album by these London,UK blues rock outift....
not a real fan of blues or blues rock, but this is very, very good IMO, bits of folk, blues and i guess what you'd call 'early' prog rock happening here....
very Keith Moon type drumming also happening here....
has a bit of a Paul Weller feel from his 'wildwood' album on my favourite track and Small Faces/Humblepie feel on "warm sun"...
shame i couldnt find any decent live clips for this one which is a shame as im sure these guys would have been great live back in the day...
two bonus tracks(9+10) from the original sessions also which werent included on the original release, but still good nonetheless...
oh yeh, as a footnote, the album got its title from the suburb in London where they lived(cricklewood) and the 'green' part comes from the owner of the property who supplied the guys with a certain green tobacco to smoke...LOL, true!!!!

good review Crazy mate !!!!...one of the first vinyls I bought !!!!! Sugar the Road is a standout for me ! Actually I saw these guys live in Moncton, Canada in 1974 and I was only six feet away...mind blowing at the time for a 21 year old !!!!! I still remeber Alvin's red guitar...of course their signature was Goin' Home which they did at Woodstock !

The defining one hit wonder band has their sophomore outing with this one, which just misses a like score
for me. Nothing I love and 5 bombs. After the international #1 My Sharona made it impossible to match, I
at least expected a decent follow up. Didn't help in the public view that Capitol used subtle attempts to
market the group as the next Beatles. That only bothered a few million music lovers. The lead off Baby
Talks Dirty sounds like a remake of Sharona. That was probably intentional, but come on people. Show some
creativity or get out of the game. A couple of slower paced songs were the best for me, but even those
were a push. I see where Doug Fieger claimed that all of these tracks were written before their first
album, which was intended to be a double album. A deecnt cover of the Kinks The Hard Way from their very
nice album Schoolboys In Disgrace. Had to get that Kinks plug in there. Singles here were Baby Talks Dirty
at #38, and Can't Put A Price On Love at #62. The album came in at #15 and did go gold but still, quite a
comedown from the #1 Sharona and #1 Get The Knack.
Damn, this weeds good.
