JETHRO TULL "heavy horses" cd,1977.

the second Tull album...
been listening to these two albums in my car for a while now,
this one didnt "get me" or more to the point i didnt "get it" when i first heard it!, not as instantly accessable as "songs from the wood" IMO, but like the other one this one grew on me to the point of loving both of them over those few short weeks...
another great folky yet rocky album, i have no other material to compare these to, but if this is the standard of Tull's albums then he has me hooked, again, like the other one this is a lyrical masterpiece, so unique, yet sounding so familliar without being obnoxious or full of pretence....
oh Jethro, you have sold me man...so here i come, your album sales in Australia are about to skyrocket!!!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Hey CH - many people don't 'get' this album but it is one of the finest in terms of production, recording and musicianship I have in my collection. For many years in the recording industry if you had the tag 'ex Jethro Tull', you were hired instantly. Ian Anderson is a very hard taskmaster and he drilled his band members to perfection. It had to be right otherwise you did it again - over and over. I've seen them a couple of times and it's always high quality. Try his solo albums 'The Secret Language of Birds' and 'Rupi's Dance' as well. Bit softer than Tull but very good IMO. The 'Aqualung Live' is worth a listen as well. When I listen to 'Moths' from HH nothing else in the world exists - I am completely lost in it.

JETHRO TULL "songs from the wood" cd,1977.

only recently been made a convert of Jethro thanks to consistantly positive comments from Jerome,MH,SteveO and earlier ones by Tiggi and Gryphon...
i went to see Corey some weeks back and asked him to recommend an album as a good introduction to these guys...he pulled out a double set of this one and "heavy horses" in a twin pack of cds.

i could not believe these guys have never surfaced on my radar before as both albums are brilliant IMO.
i simply love the combination of the raw earthy feel of old-time folk with the solid sounds of electric guitars at various points. lyrically also, this is what i consider a masterpiece...
cant quite pick who Tull sounds like and its bugging the hell out of me, although at times i do hear a bit of Cat Stevens in there its not enough to draw a conclusive comparrison.
all up, a fantastic album that is only just slightly better than Heavy Horses...im guessing Jethro's back catalogue will now gradually start to get purchased!!!!!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Tull can't really be compared to any other band. They are unique.

In keeping with the 'Tull' mode at present I decided (after more than an hour of searching I might add) to dig out 'Thick as a Brick'. Played it through three times today. Some parts of it are pure genius - some I don't like. Had a lot of fun reading the original newspaper articles from the original vinyl release. If you have this look at the articles closely - especially the phone numbers. Clever bit of marketing. Really takes me back.

By the way CH, have a feeling you might enjoy 'Crest of a Knave' even more. Less folky - a lot more vibrant.

I've always liked the somewhat forgotten/obscure album - A Passion Play ! I noticed that Ian Anderson has just released Thick as a Brick Part Two ????
