A real page turner for me. No, seriously. All 700+ pages. Kept going back to read parts I didn't fully understand. Then would read more than I planned on at a sitting, because some event was taking place. Could be the best history book I have ever read. Goes all the way back to the 1400's. I don't think the author was there then. Didn't ake to much to jump ahead to the 1800's when the French got involved, deciding the country was theirs. Onlt took them a 100 or so years to clear that up. Then the dumb ass U.S. decided we had to use that domino theory rubbish. Once the book gets to the war years, the political battles that take place are as interesting as the military battles. Who will overthrow who in what country, having an impact on the end. Oh yeah, we lost.

I guess this completes my Jane Austen reading. This seems to be the worst of the 4. Well written as are all, just not much there. As a teen, Fanny goes to live with her rich uncle, falls in love with cousin Edmund, but he does not think of her in that way. Henry has the hots for Fanny, but she does not think of him in that way. Fanny wins and gets her man in the end. blah blah blah.

Memoir from the former U.N. Ambassador (first term) and Secretary of State (second term) during the Clinton years. Chech born during the onset of WWII, her family made it out, although her grandparents ended up in the concentration camps. Not a good ending for them. Madeleines family made it to the states. Her father being a diplomat made that a natural path for her. A very good book laying out the multitude of international problems that no doubt unfold in any administration. Interesting to note her insistence that Sadam Hussein had to go. That was taken care of by the future president. More time was spent on the Bosnia/Croatia area and Milosevec than any other area. That being the highlight of her achievements, I guess that would be natural. A good deal of the book also covers the repeated attempts to get some kind of peace agreement between Israel and Arafat also. That would not happen. Arafat blew his chance to get 90% of the land he desired. Not missing him on the world scene.
