What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 06-10-2012 from my library (vinyl) ![]() SteveO did a Joe South recently but I don't remember which one, and I'm too lazy to look it up. One of the great overlooked artists in my book. I see where the guy passed away just last month and I never even heard that. Looks like we need an R.I.P. thread. This is listed as Joe's first album, but it has Games People Play on it, which is the title of his second album. I'm confused. Joe South has that white southern funk sound for me. Always reminded me of Tony Joe White, or is it the other way around. Joe never really made it commercially, although well respected by the industry. Even the Grammy for Song Of The Year for Games People Play in 1970 didn't help. That was the kiss of death back then. A lot of Joe's songs were hits for other artists. The biggest of those here is Rose Garden which was a #1 country hit for Lynn Anderson in 1971. Love that by either Lynn or Joe. In fact there are seven songs I love on this album. That's hard to achieve on a studio album. Aha, I found the answer, this album was shuffled and reissued as Games People Play the year following this release. What a ripoff! I think I have them both, lol. Sorry to hear of his passing ! RIP Joe..I love your music and impeccable voice ..thanks ! What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 07-10-2012 You are right on mate! CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:i think it was initially Jerome, SteveO...as i picked up on this album because of him also...posted it a while ago, coming in close to a love rating..great album What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 07-10-2012 A detour today - Listening to Tanita Tikaram's 'Ancient Heart' - Some great tracks - some not so great. One track - 'I Love You' has one of the finest examples of how to record an acoustic solo guitar in a studio. Fantastic sound. Only others that I can think of is Uriah Heep's 'The Wizard' and all of the stuff on Ry Cooder's 'Buena Vista Social Club'. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 11-10-2012 ![]() BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "darkness on the edge of town" cd,1978. The Boss' fourth album... 'darkness' describes these tracks perfectly, all about the downtrodden working classes in one way or another in the form of ballads, raunchy rock n roll numbers and all the Boss hallmarks.... this album marks the first in a trilogy of truly classy albums for him(the others are 'the river' and 'nebraska', 'nebraska' incidently comes out tomorrow, ive already done 'the river' here a while ago, which got a love score)...this album is ALL CLASS,even the tracks that score "**",would be worthy of "***" on most other albums by him and certainly by most other artists standards, so even the worst track here is very good in its own right... I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: adam raised a cain best track: darkness on the edge of town tracks: 1. badlands *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFAr2AbvvF8 live 2. adam raised a cain ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWertakKIDE live 3. something in the night ** 4. candy's room *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jt5XdnHKcQ live (vevo) 5. racing in the street *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtQqQxD021Y live 6. the promised land *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekdXmPlCBOY live 7. factory ** 8. streets of fire ** 9. prove it all night *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xab-th4ltU live 10.darkness on the edge of town *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUTPsRJ6e2k live 3s=6 2s=4 1s=0 rating: 2.6 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-10-2012 ![]() BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "nebraska" cd,1982. the songs on here are as dark as the Nebraskan skies pending a tornado, and the music is as sparse as the countryside on the cover...this could easily have been a Nick Cave album IMO, its all about loneliness, dispair, worthlessness, redemption and murder, yes The Boss does sing about murder...a murder ballads album maybe? the title track is based on the events of 17 year old Nebraskan serial killer Charles Starkweather from around 1958ish who, with his girlfriend(14yrs), shot to death around ten innocent people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time...he was executed in 1959,his girlfriend, frommemory, was paroled in the 1990s. elsewhere, if the track 'reason to believe' doesnt evoke 'faith' in your psychy, then you are soulless IMO... great album, even the ones i give "**" to, come close to love tracks.... up there with his best albums for sure! I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: state trooper best track: atlantic city tracks: 1. nebraska *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwcOhOv4fho live 2. atlantic city *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gODj-B074tM live 3. mansion on the hill ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHpcfoVQ4eA live 4. johnny 99 *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD-0xE7JjN8 live 5. highway patrolman *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-wPDmQEy2Y audio 6. state trooper ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmT-jlL8ZiY audio 7. used cars ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zYf9Uw-6Ak audio 8. open all night ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcBv5dSfmJg audio 9. my fathers house ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYDW1bIwIV4 audio 10.reason to believe *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc4UopypcT8 audio 3s=5 2s=5 1s=0 rating: 2.5 What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 14-10-2012 An abslutely brilliant album CRAZY-HORSE Wrote: What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 14-10-2012 I spelled absolutely wrong...NO EDIT BUTTON !!!!! What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-10-2012 ![]() TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS "into the great wide open" cd,1991. i always thought of Petty as a 'bob dylan who could sing' LOL after the success of the Travelling Willbury's and his "full moon fever" solo set, both produced by Jeff Lynne, Petty re-unites with his Heartbreakers for another Lynne produced set... although i do like this album it seems as though its just too 'polished' in the production...like ELO's material. and IMO Petty was always one of those 'rough and rugged' artists who seemed to appreciate the warts and all studio sound ie:record as is and let it be. look, nothing bad on this album whatsoever, some great tracks also...only two tracks on here also that i would say were 'classic' Petty sounding songs..."out in the cold" and "makin' some noise", probably as Lynnes stamp is not all over these ones. also interssrting to note that there was a distinct George Harrison sound throughout this one. some lovely 'americana' style story telling on here, which is something Petty has always excelled at(like Springsteen), pretty hard to knock a guy who was still writing good tunes into the third decade of his career...! I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: learning to fly best track: all the wrong reasons tracks: 1. learning to fly ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5BJXwNeKsQ vevo video 2. king's highway ** 3. into the great wide open *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0v7e3e7toU live 4. two gunslingers ** 5. the dark of the sun ** 6. all or nothin' ** 7. all the wrong reasons *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZtgyEC9xAw audio 8. too good to be true ** 9. out in the cold ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8BiXw4DOo8 audio 10.you and i will meet agian *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjYigpILn9Y audio 11.makin' some noise *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDyDKtRl8S0 live 12. built to last ** 3s=4 2s=8 1s=0 rating: 2.3 |
