Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 27-12-2012

#422 - Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) - 1965

running recap for me - 3's=39, 2's=31, 1's=9
this one - ***
from the album: Second Album
Written by Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland
Produced by Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland
Chart action: #1 US, #10 UK

the players:
Levi Stubbs - lead vocals
Abdul "Duke" Fakir - backing vocals
Renaldo "Obie" Benson - backing vocals
Lawrence Payton - backing vocals
Funk Brothers - instruments

Works for me, one of them soul classics. I see lead man Levi Stubbs is a cousin of Jackie
Wilson. Unlike most vocal groups of the day, the Tops stayed together. Same lineup for over 40
years until the deth of Lawrence Payton in 1997. Detroit natives who dumped Motown when the
label decided to move to Los Angeles. Unfortunately that's about when the hits stopped coming.

Lyrics

Ooh, sugar pie, honey bunch
You know that I love you
I can't help myself
I love you and nobody else

In and out my life (In and out my life)
You come and you go (You come and you go)
Leaving just your picture behind (Ooh)
And I've kissed it a thousand times (Ooh)

When you snap your finger or wink your eye
I come a-running to you
I'm tied to your apron strings
And there's nothing that I can do, ooh

I can't help myself
No, I can't help myself

'Cause sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
I'm weaker than a man should be
I can't help myself
I'm a fool in love, you see

Wanna tell you I don't love you
Tell you that we're through and I try
But every time I see your face (Can't help myself)
I get all choked up inside

When I call your name
Girl, it starts to flame (Burning in my heart, tearing it all apart)
No matter how I try
My love I cannot hide

'Cause sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
You know that I'm waiting for you (Waiting for you)
I can't help myself
I love you and nobody else, ooh

Sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
I'd do anything you ask me to (Ask me to)
I can't help myself
I want you and nobody else, ooh

Sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
You know that I love you (Love you)
I can't help myself
No, I can't help myself, ooh

Sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
You know that I love you

#421 - Coasters - Young Blood - 1957

running recap for me - 3's=39, 2's=32, 1's=9
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Doc Pomus
Produced by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller
Chart action: #1 US

the players:
Carl Gardner - vocals
Billy Guy - vocals
Bobby Nunn - vocals
Leon Hughes - vocals

Never heard this before or even knew the Coasters did it. Only version I knew was Bad Companys.
I'm sure I knew it wasn't their song. Always looked at a songs writer. Pretty good version here
and it's their baby. I see the Beatles played this back in their club days. See, I just keep
learnin' stuff. They mention a few covers of this on wiki but fail to include BC's. It wasn't
that bad.

Lyrics

I saw her standin' on the corner
A yellow ribbon in her hair
I couldn't stop myself from shoutin
Look a-there Look a-there
Look a-there Look a-there

Young blood, young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

I took one look and I was fractured
I tried to walk but I was lame
I tried to talk but I just stuttered
What's your name What's your name
What's your name What's your name

Young blood, young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

What crazy stuff She looked so tough
I had to follow her all the way home
Then things went bad; I met her dad
He said, "You'd better leave my daughter alone"

I couldn't sleep a wink for tryin'
I saw the rising of the sun
And all night my heart was cryin'
You're the one, you're the one
You're the one, you're the one

Young blood, young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

SteveO Wrote:^ I like this song....Boys of Summer is very nostalgic for me somewhat like Adam's Summer of 69. I like Henley's unmistakable vocals.

Agreed! I think I know all the words too lol Out on the road today I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac.......

#420 - Little Richard - The Girl Can't Help It - 1956

running recap for me - 3's=39, 2's=33, 1's=9
this one - **
from the album: The Georgia Peach
Written by Bobby Troup
Produced by Robert Blackwell
Chart action: #49 US, #9 UK

the players:
Little Richard - vocals
other people singing and playing things

Another one I couldn't have told you who did it prior to this. Actually better than most LR's
for me. From a movie of the same name starring Jayne Mansfield. Plan was for Fats Domino to do
this. Not sure what happened there. I guess little won over fat. Covered by the Animals, Mick
Ronson, Everly Brothers, Flamin' Groovies and Led Zeppelin. Didn't know all that either.

Lyrics

She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she walks by, the men folks get engrossed,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she winks an eye, the bread slice turn to toast,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she got a lot, of what they call the most,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
The girl can't help it, she was born to please,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
And if she's got, a figure made to squeeze,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
Won't you kindly be aware, the girl can't help it,
The girl can't help it,
If she mesmerizes, every mother's son,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she's smiling, beefsteak become well done,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
She makes grand pa feel like twenty one,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
The girl can't help it, she was born to please,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
And if I go to her, on bended knees,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
Won't you kindly be aware, that I can't help it,
I can't help it,
Because I'm hoping, obviously,
That some day, the answer would be,
The girl can't help it, she's in love with me,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it.
