Forty years in the business and still put out something this good, amazing! My usual complaint of the length of
country albums aside, this one makes up for it in quality. Seven of the ten tracks are classics for me. Damn, I
wish I had a beer to cry in. A salty joints just not the same. Two singles from here never even hit the charts,
which is unreal to me, but I guess the record buyers were into the watered down Garth Brooks at this point. The
album only made #35 on the country charts, and George took these things personal. Probably sent him on another
coke/whiskey induced hell raiser. Once agin living to tell it all. Those two singles were Hell Stays Open and Six
Foot Deep, both among his best work. Two songs from here became hit for other artists, Somebody Paints The Wall was
a top 10 for Tracy Lawrence, and Blake Shelton maded 'Ol Red a top 20. Both of those were only a like score for me,
but those covers couldn't have been better than the Possums.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - If The World Don't End Tomorrow

Best Track - Hell Stays Open (All Night Long)

She said hello
And I said hon', it's me
She said I might have known
And I said oh, listen please
Leaving you for her was wrong
Please let me come back home
This old town's closed down
And I have no place to go

And she said
Hell stays open all night long
Hell never closes
It's open from dawn 'til dawn
When I slammed the door to heaven
I should have known
Hell stays open all night long

She said good-bye
Don't call me anymore
For the one that I love now
Is at my door
Some one has took your place
This is something you'll just have to face
As far as I'm concerned
When you have no place to go - remember

Hell stays open all night long
Hell never closes
It's open from dawn 'til dawn
When I slammed the door to heaven
I should have known
Hell stays open all night long

Neil's fifteenth solo album. Back when I could still keep up with him. As the title suggests, this is the
folky/country Neil as opposed to the electronic Neil which I can't handle. He had wanted to do this one earlier but
new label head David Geffen had insisted on a rocker. Neil got his way this time. Waylon and Willie both show up
here. Willie on just one track, that Cowboy song, Waylon throughout. Worst track for me is the leadoff cover of The
Wayward Wind where Neil shares vocals with Doana Cooper. Don't know who she is but she didn't help. All others are
Neil compositions with the best being Bound For Glory, a duet with Waylon. Love four of the ten tracks here and
like everything else. Most of these are country flavored tunes both in music and lyrics. One exception is the
totally out of place Misfits, and that title is appropriate, as the song is about astronauts. Not a bad song, just
a wtf moment. Makes you wonder how it ended up on this album. Then again, Neil always wants to throw a spike in the
wagon wheel as you're rolling comfortably along on the trail. The album only reached #75 overall here, but a rare
#24 on the country chart, on the strength of the minor country hit of Get Back To The Country. Now I gotta see what
the CRAZY man gave this one.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - The Wayward Wind

Best Track - Bound For Glory

Out on the trans-Canada highway
There was a girl
Hitchhiking with her dog
Fireflies buzzin' round her head
Like candles in the fog.

He was three miles down the road
Tryin' to stay up,
But he knew that he couldn't
She was looking
For a ride through the night
But out there, who wouldn't.

They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two comets heading for a bed.

She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an
'84 International and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

He was tired of
Writin' letters to himself
And living in the dark
She was open to suggestions
And some say
She had a broken heart.

He had everything he wanted
'Til it all
Turned out to be a job
One fallen asleep trucker
And a girl
Hitchhiking with her dog.

They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two comets heading for a bed.

She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an
'84 International and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

Out on the trans-Canada highway
The sun came climbing up the cab
By the time it hit the window
They were wakin' up
From what little sleep they had.

When that heat hit the blankets
They were looking
For love at second sight
Just starin' in each others' eyes
Findin' it in the mornin' light.

They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two blankets layin' on a bed.

She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an
'84 International and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

i just rechecked the NY beginners guide thing and on this album i gave 2x *** yet only one shows up by the individual tracks, i checked my hand written notes which i kept on my thoughts for the album and Bound For Glory does get ***, and not the * posted by the song, so thanks MH, my mistake has now been corrected...thus we agree that the two best ones on "old ways" are exactly the same....another "like minded" moment!
