Must have picked this up in a used bin. Never heard of him before or after. English dude with his debut album. Got him a Brit Award nomination
for Best British Newcomer, losing out to A1, whoever that is. Strange to get that recognition when the album never even charted. Must have known
someone on the nominating group. Very dark moody music, with nice lyrics. Toured with Tori Amos after his third album. Out of his 5 albums only
2 have charted and that was in the UK. His last 2 have gone nowhere, the last in 2010. Assume he is still active. This album barely scrapes by
for me. Too laid back maybe.

debut album from these punk-rockers....
there's only two punk albums IMO that are rock classics...this one and the Sex Pistols only studio release "never mind the bollocks"...both of which would definately be in my list of the 'top10 albums' of the 1970s...,infact, they'd sit at #1 and #2 of that list(if i ever made one up!)
the album was not released outside the UK for almost two years after its initial release,and then, had an alternate tracklisting removing two or three of these original tracks and then also adding another three tracks...WTF!
unlike ALL other UK punk groups from this period, these guys were genuinely social/political savvy...it wasnt just a fight against the establishment with them,it was well informed commentary, they also used more than the standard two or three chords on their songs...they were real musicinas...and as writers...well, they used 'bridges'/'middle 8's' in their songs.
this is a tight,controlled album of great songs which represent the situation in the UK in that period...
if there is one Clash studio album you purchase make it this one('london calling' is not punk,its a rock/pop/reggae/rockabilly album!)

The Clash's fifth studio album and where they should have signed off for good IMO...
first half of the album contains what i term "the classic Clash sounds"...full of electric guitars and a punkish feel
second half....more experimental with samples,more orchestrated music in parts,dubbed sounds and slower tracks...
i sort of look at this one as the first half being a Joe Strummer album and the second half a Mick Jones album(sort of their "abbey road" if you will.
strange to note that "should i stay or should i go" was re-released in the UK in 1990 as part of a tv commercial(could have been a jeans advert?) and it went back in the charts at #1, giving the guys not only their first UK top 10 single, but also their only #1 hit...
"rock the casbah" was re-released hot on the heels of that success and peaked at #15 also...
all up some very,very good Clash tracks on this one, but also some stuff that makes the passing grade but is still very average...

THE CLASH "the story of the clash volume I" double cd, 1988

double compilation set containing twenty-eight tracks...
ive posted before that their final album "cut the crap" lives up to the title in that it is a big piece of crap...and not surprisingly, there are no tracks from that album on this one,not even the singles!...
this contains all their UK singles,including the several non-album singles they recorded,plus a few album tracks also...
i find the title "volume 1" slightly misleading and on two levels, firstly...there is no volume 2 out there and secondly, there are no tracks from their final studio album(when the title suggests it is "the story of the clash"...
its just a shame these tracks are not in chronological release order here so we can here how these guys progessed over the decade they were around, but i guess you can program the tracks on your cd player nowadays if you choose to...
all up,allbeit with a couple of hiccups, this is a very good career spanning compilation of these guys...it shows their lunk side, their rockabilly,pop,dance,reggae sides along with their experimental journeys into dub,soundbytes,samples etc long beofre it became a commonplace to use them in popular music...Damn you Clash!, you have a lot to answer for!

This does nothing for me. Always reminds me of Beck who I at least grew to like. Not sure if I even know anything else by Moby besides this
album. Can't buy anything else based on this though. They certainly must like him in the UK and AUS where this went to the top. Showing 8
singles but I no longer know what a single is. I do like some of the music (beatz samples) on this, but when I do, the lyrics bring it down. I
think I'm in one of my stickler for meaningful lyrics phases. It will pass when I run out of pot.
