my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 09-10-2013

ROD STEWART "downtown train" b/w "the killing of georgie pts 1+2" 1989

love this "a" side, almost classic Stewart IMO, had a best of set released at this time and to promote it the classic 'killing of georgie' was issued on the "b" side
thought this one scored a chart placing of only #25 here, was sure this was a bigger hit here...

LITTLE RIVER BAND "the other guy" b/w "take it easy on me" 1982

band's first single since the departure of longstanding vocalist Glenn Shorrock, this time round they picked aussie rock legend John Farnham to supply vocals here...
love this "a" side, great track IMO, "b" side is pretty good also
single made it to #18 here...

SPLIT ENZ "history never repeats" b/w "holy smoke" 1980

Split Enz best "a" and "b" side combination IMO...and both are Neil Finn compositions...
typical Enz sound on the "a' side, "b' side is still uptempo but more acoustic in places...
i cant criticise these guys, theyre up there with The Beatles IMO, and i dont say that lightly, awesome talents, great tunes and perfect pop music!
single made it to #4 here...

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN "magic" b/w "fool country" 1980

not a big fan of Olivia, but she was a pretty good singles artist...
these two tracks come from the Xanadu soundtrack...,like the "a' side, dislike the "b' side
single got to #4 here....

MADNESS "one better day" b/w "guns" 1984

single is a ballad by "the nutty boys"..."a' side has a distincy Sade "smooth operator" sound to it...not really Madness IMO.
"b" side is a mashed up noise...
i guess these guys had run their race by this time, losing their trademark sound and struggling to fit in,single was one of their first not to reach the UK top10.
single also failed to chart here

PAUL McCARTNEY "waterfalls" b/w "check my machine" 1980

very, very good piano ballad from Macca, he himself, always said he thought this one was underdone, not finished, but i love it!
it comes off his first strictly solo set in almost a decade...
"b" side is a mish-mash of sounds and voices, sort of like The Fireman material, i dont like that stuff or this, but it shows how much ahead of his time and relevant Macca still was in 1980!
single only reached #31 here but should have got higher IMO

PRINCE "batdance" b/w "200 balloons" 1989

im a fan of His Royal Highness, but not of this single...
this has to be the worst thing he ever recorded, the "b' side is a funky mess...both sides are crap!
cant believe this one got to #2 on the charts here,it probably deserved #200LOL!

CLIFF RICHARD "the best of me" b/w "move it" & "lindsay jane" 1989

not really a fan of Sir Cliff, used to be but his sound has almost passed its use-by date with me of late...
this was incidently his 100th single release in the UK, one of the "b" side tracks..."move it" was his first release back in 1958...
the other "b' side track is a new song for the single, now,as i said, im not a fan of this guy but its hard to knock him for his longevity in the industry, and for your info he is apparently currently recording his 100th studio album at this time for a christmas 2013 release date!
single got to #1 in his home country of the UK but only reached #63 here!

WINGS "mull of kintyre" b/w "girls school" 1977

this one became the first single in British music history to sell two million copies in the UK,previous highest seller was Beatles "i want to hold you rhand" which sold 1.8 million there..
this one became a Christmas #1 hit there back in the day...Macca's right-hand man and ex-Moody Blues vocalist Denny Laine was almost bankrupt at this stage and Macca gave him co-writing credits for the "a' side...
the "a' side is a simple two note/two chord song that shows simplicity is not something to be laughed at, pretty hard to knock the sing-a-long chorus and those bagpipes, brilliant stuff!
"b" side is a raunchy Wings rocker and was the "a' side of the single in the US, i guess the yanks thought the rocker would sell better than a bunch of bagpipes ever would!!!!
single got to #1 here!
