What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 22-12-2011

10-disc set restricted to only their No. 1 hits. They have included virtually anything that can be claimed as a No.1 hit, including two from Country singer TG Sheppard, released on a Motown subsidiary label, which stick out like a sore thumb.

Brilliant music, spanning Smokey & The Miracles' Shop Around (1960), to Erykah Badu's Bag Lady (2000), and all points in between: Main players would be The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, assorted Jacksons, Diana Ross solo, Lionel Richie, & Boyz II Men (more on them later...).

The first eight discs are pure gold, showing how one organisation can become a cauldron of creativity, but the last disc and a half feature The Boys, DeBarge, & Boyz II Men, which for the most part push my cheese-o-meter into the red zone. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with this music, it just does very little for me, and I listened out of a sense of duty rather then enjoyment.

Overall this is a magnificent box full of great music. There are some clunkers in there IMV, but they're far outweighed by the winners.

RoviMusic 3+/5 stars.

sounds like a great set IMO,maybe not so much the latter material, but certainly the pre '75 stuff.
as you said, the diamonds would outweigh the rocks!

Innercity Griots-Freestyle Fellowship

Can anybody say underrated. This is excellent, second to only "36 Chambers" in my personal hip hop canon, yet I'm the only who seems to know this exists. The beats are fresh as ever, the lyrics are clever and incredibly entertaining, and the rapping, well, let's ust say it's pretty amazing

50 CENT "massacre" cd, 2005.

i ended up with three of 50's albums before i realised he was bloody useless!!
thats not to say he doesnt make good songs, he does, but only the equivelant of one third of each album is listenable IMO.
just keep falling for the singles off his albums and buying the albums on the stength of it!
i guess the main problem i have with 50 is the same as most rappers.....all he wants to rap about is guns,'hits',bitches, hoes, whores etc etc, and there are only so many times i want to hear about 'bitches' and 'hoes' and what they are supposed to do with and for "men"! also only so many ways that those things can be described without the same phrases being used!
i dont have a problem with his vocals and the 'flow' of his raps,
i mean its pretty immature when he raps..."i'll take you to the candy shop, and you can lick my lollipop" then a female voice replies "you can take me to the candyshop, i will lick your lollipop"....nice catchy tune and all but seriously...if he wants to be respected as a serious rapper he needs to be a bit more intelligent like Eminem, afterall, Eminem discovered him and basically made him the household name he is due to collaborations!

You sum my feelings up about rap very well.
I don't have much. Only thing against it is the constant vulgarity.
Jazzy Randy would get me for that.

what can be said about this R&B/Soul legend that hasnt been said already.
great pianist/writer/vocalist, influenced Sam Cooke,Little Richard,Jackie Wilson amongst others, probably
influenced s many artists as Elvis Presley,Chuck Berry,Billie Holiday etc etc...so he is certainly in elite
company and put his stamp on popular music forever and a day IMO.
this is not really a best of set, but it is nevetheless a compilation of his songs.
of the twelve tracks on offer, four made the US charts, including two R&B #1 hits in "what'd i say" and
"i got a woman" with two other top 10 hits here also.
no bad tracks on here at all, pretty hard to go past Georgia On My Mind, but my favourite one is "kiss me baby", a
very Little Richard-esque number where Ray actually sounds more like Dick than Dick does.

Underground Vol 1 1991-1994-Triple Six Mafia

Triple Six Mafia is the early incarnation of Three Six Mafia, leaders of the putred crunk movement and makers of some song for the god awful "Crash" movement. As hard as it may be to believe, this is actually really good. Avant hip hop in a way, not to everyone's taste but certainly to mine

Another great singer who left us much too early, in 1964 at the age of 33. A violent death, ruled a justifiable homicide. Shot and killed by a motel manager in California, after she claimed he had attacked her. His body was found in a sports jacket and shoes, nothing else. The story goes a lot deeper but enough of that. The guy made some damn fine music. With 28 tracks on this collection, only two I don't like and I love more than half of them. Mississippi native whose father was a baptist minister, Sam started singing gospel after the family moved to Chicago. A member of the group The Soul Stirrers who made numerous gospel recordings. First pop success was with a song called Loveable in 1956 that is not on here. After switching labels, Sam released You Send Me, which would put him at the top of the charts. Other big hits include Chain Gang, Twistin' The Night Away, Cupid, Another Saturday Night and Bring It On Home To Me. Sam wrote every song on here which makes it all the more impressive. A posthumous release of A Change Is Gonna Come, which became a civil rights anthem, cemented Sams place in history, giving him a total of 29 singles that made the Billboard Top 40. Inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1986, the same year as this release. Nice American Bandstand performance and interview in clip #24.

Worst Track - That's Heaven To Me

Best Track - Meet Me At Mary's Place

A friend of mine told me one early mornin'
(Over at Mary's place, ho)
Said tonight there's gonna be a party goin' on
(Over at Mary's place, ho)
He said "If you can enjoy a real nice affair
(Over at Mary's place, ho)
Then you'll make it your business to be right there"
(Over at Mary's place, ho)

He said in fact: Meet me (meet me at Mary's place)
We're gonna have (we're gonna have us a ball today)
Why don't you (meet me at Mary's place)
Why don't you meet me (meet me at Mary's place)
We're gonna have (we're gonna have us a ball today)
Why don't you (meet me at Mary's place, ho)

He said: There's one thing I that want you to know
(Over at Mary's place, ho)
You're gonna have a good time before you go
(Over at Mary's place, ho)
He said: There's one more thing that I'm gonna guarantee
(Over at Mary's place, ho)
Got to have fun if you're a man like me
(Over at Mary's place, ho)

If you wanna have fun, meet me (meet me at Mary's place)
We're gonna have (we're gonna have us a ball today)
Why don't you (meet me at Mary's place)
Oh meet me (meet me at Mary's place)
We're gonna have (we're gonna have us a ball today)
Why don't you (meet me at Mary's place, ho)

If you wanna have a good time (meet me at Mary's place)
We're gonna have (we're gonna have us a ball today)
Come on & (meet me at Mary's place)
Oh, meet me (meet me at Mary's place)
We're gonna have (we're gonna have us a ball today)
Come on & (meet me at Mary's place, ho)

Their fifth, from 1977.

This is one Commodores album too many, I feel. A comp of their singles would suffice, as they're not what I'd call an albums band.

Certainly not a bad album, but this doesn't get played much.
