What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 27-02-2012 i have two of Charlies albums...both very good...Million Mile Reflections & Windows, which contain my two favourite tracks in Devil Went Down To Georgia & Still In Saigon respectively... some of his material is what i would call Southern Rock, but as you said, the majority of it is "country", sounds like i should invest in a career spanning "best of" set! What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 27-02-2012 from my library (vinyl) ![]() The Oaks were around long before the first hit of Y'all Come Back Saloon. Just in a different form. Gospel was their forte way back to the 50's. Different lineup back then. In fact, until they went straight country the group was a revolving door. This was the last album that was all gospel. Titled Old Fashioned Down Home Hand Clappin Foot Stompin Southern Style Gospel Quartet Music, I shortened it. Thanks on the cover to Johnny Cah and Charlie Daniels for stopping by for the sessions. Not sure what cuts they appear on, although Johnny's No Earthly Good is covered here. Two standouts for me with Lord I've Been Ready For Years and It's Been Done, and of course no clip for my favorite. In fact, only two clips available for the whole album. The rest is just good country gospel with nothing I don't like. If only they did songs like this at my church, I wouldnt fall asleep all the time. Worst choir ever, and I can't help them. I LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Jesus Knows Who I Am Best Track - Lord I've Been Ready For Years 1) Lord I've Been Ready For Years *** 2) No Earthly Good ** 3) Jesus Knows Who I Am ** 4) The Same Old Fashioned Way ** 5) I'm Winging My Way Back Home ** 6) Where The Soul Never Dies ** live - The Oak Ridge Boys - Where The Soul Never Dies - YouTube 7) It's Been Done *** audio - Oak Ridge Boys--Its Been Done - YouTube 8) Doctor God ** 9) Jesus Was There ** 10) Last Train To Glory ** 3's - 2 2's - 8 1's - 0 Grade - 2.2 so many albums, so little time What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 02-03-2012 ![]() ANGUS & JULIA STONE "a book like this" cd,2007 this is Australian folky brother and sister act's second album... sort of an Antipodean Laura Marling is probably the best way to describe this duo in general. acoustic guitars, strings, bass, piano, clarinet, glockenspiel, bass and harmonicas all find their way onto this one giving a real rootsy folk feel with laid back vocals. also, important to note how prolific these guys have been since their 2006 debut...have released four albums as a duo,Julia has released two solo sets and Angus one solo set with both currently putting the finishing touches to another solo outing each...thats a total of nine albums in seven years, and all are of a pretty good quality IMO. have been quite popular here on the summer festival shows for several years now and big amongst the folkies in Londons folk scene and with university gigs in the US/Canada.... a very underrated and under appreciated act in the general music scene, but they have not changed their style in order to achieve success, just happy making high quality modern folk albums! Granted, this album is a speck of dirt compared to her defining masterpiece "Ys", but there's barely any album that wouldn't be but a speck of dirt compared to "Ys". This is still fantastic and beautiful stuff from my generation's greatest talent What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 04-03-2012 Joanna could be nominated for H of Fame honours,,I would guess along with her classic albums and a beginners guide, Nice album review also for Milk Eyed Mender and Ys ...just a thought .... mile:mtthwibrahim Wrote:Milk-Eyed Mender-Joanna Newsom What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-03-2012 ![]() JOHNNY CASH "hymns by johnny cash" cd,1959. theres something about Gospel Country that appeals to me, i guess because its not strictly one or the other, Cash does it well so does Kristofferson when he does it and Goerge Jones also. not strictly a "hymns" album as the title suggests as The Cashman wrote most of these tracks whose subject matter deals with spirituality. this was the album he wanted to make with Sun Records but Sam Phillips didnt see a future with Gospel nor country gospel...so Cash took up the offer to record with Columbia Records with the condition that they wouldnt interfere with his song selections on any albums, they agreed and Cash became another one that Sun lost! a fine collection of spiritual tracks, both the old and the newly written ones. The Verses are a brother and sister act from Australia, formerly members of Killing Heidi(sort of post grunge type material). anyway after Killing Heidi imploded around 2005 Ella & Jesse Hooper took a break from music, spending time just writing songs for no apparent reason, by early 2010 they had wht they thought were enough songs for a new album. off they went to LA with producer Mitchell Froom(crowded house, mccartney) and with enlisted help from guitarist Val McCallum(jackson browne's guitarist) and the current Elvis Costello touring band they recorded and released this album of mainly country pop tune in the same vein as Taylor Swift and the country folk sounds of Kasey Chambers combined. look, nothing brilliant on here, but nothing bad neither, simply eleven good tracks of simple crossover country-pop. i guess the only criticism of this one is that there is little variation in the sound of the songs and by track eight i was looking to see how much longer this one has to go before its finished. but regardless of that, Ella Hooper has a pleasant voice with good vocal control, so its a pass mark for me for this... I LIKE THIS ALBUM pretty hard to pick a track that is worse than the others and also one that is better than the others, but i guess track 10 (the winter) has a slightly different sound t it than the other tracks so i select that one as best track here today, also "teeth" is a pretty good one, sort of a throwback to their Killing Heidi days in the early '00s.. sorry about the lack of links here, but at least the two i mentioned have links so listen away. oh yeh, SteveO, you like female vocalists, hope you like The Verses mate! tracks: 1. still come around ** The Verses - Still Come Around - YouTube live 2. want everything ** The Verses - Want Everything [Official Video] - YouTube video 3. settle down ** 4. never knew ** 5. teeth ** The Verses - Teeth (True Blood) - YouTube audio 6. let you (w)in ** 7. running away ** 8. lonely moon ** 9. midnight ** 10.the winter ** The Verses - The Winter - YouTube audio 11. waste of time ** 3s=0 2s=11 1s=0 rating: 2.0 What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 13-03-2012 Ella Hooper !!!!,,,yes yes ...I like the Verses ! Thanks for this CH !!!...Ella sounds like a cross between Lucinda Williams and Stevie Nicks ...the band is very good !..and my kinda country...not too poppy...like Lady Antebellum have been ...lol CRAZY-HORSE Wrote: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-03-2012 ![]() LEONARD COHEN "songs of leonard cohen" cd,1967. never took much notice of LC until MH started posting all his albums a while ago so i bought a double best of cd to get a feel for him...i loved it so i went and asked MH which ones i should buy first, his reply was "songs of love and hate" and this one...well, i did the other one some time ago, not sure if it got a love rating or not but it came pretty damn close from memory, well this one does make the love mark after numerous airings. this is LC's debut set...look its Cohen, its primarily acoustic story telling but its more subdued than Harry Chapin...and like Chapin its virtually impossible to pick one track above the others to call "best track", hell, i cant split tracks 4,6,7...am only posting the bonus tracks here because you either like or dislike LC, and they are for the benifit of the LC fans among us!!! also, this disc has two previously unreleased tracks included, they are not out of place with the others and fit in confortably with the rest of the album IMO. i wouldnt say im a Cohen-phile like MH but he is a very good story teller IMO I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: sisters of mercy best tracks: tracks 4,6,7 tracks: 1. suzanne *** 2. master song *** 3. winter lady ** 4. the stranger song *** 5. sisters of mercy ** 6. so long, marianne *** 7. hey, thats no way to say goodbye *** 8. stories of the street ** 9. teachers ** 10.one of us cannot be wrong ** bonus tracks: 11.store room ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNzEHc1st9s audio 12.blessed is the memory ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAIroY3i83c audio 3s=5 2s=7 1s=0 rating: 2.4 |
