What Did You Buy? - Jerome - 16-01-2011 Will give you my sixpence worth later today. Yet to listen to it. What Did You Buy? - Jerome - 16-01-2011 Right busy listening to 'The Union'. Finding it quite hard to describe - overall it has a dark mysterious quality to it. The quality is superb, the piano playing is lush, big chords. Very philosophical lyrics. About halfway through at the moment and I have to say I prefer Leon's contribution to this as opposed to Elton's. The arrangements are quite simple but effective - it has not been overproduced and instrumentation is well chosen. (Slide guitars, Hammond organ, country-style drums, piano and gospel-type background vocals). Musically there is nothing new in terms of structure etc. the songs are pretty basic but they work. The whole album has the feel of 2 guys knowing the end is near and the writing seems to revolve around that common theme. Lost chances, things we should have done - that sort of thing (There's no tomorrow - for example). Songs are generally slow, 'thunderous' (don't know if that's the right word) affairs. There are a couple of upbeat/uptempo numbers in the middle. If I had to use one word to describe it, it would be 'dark' but not in a negative way. Enjoyable easy listening - the sort of thing you can play over and over and not get tired of. Hope this helps. Favourite track for the moment is 'I Should Have Sent Roses'. Great brass backing. This track is gonna grow on me for sure. http://ww2.eltonjohn.com/union/index.html What Did You Buy? - CRAZY-HORSE - 16-01-2011 did you ever hear or get 'songs from the west coast' album, i liked that one, if you know it Jerome, how does it stackup, the lyrics in that one were very,as you put it, 'lost chances' and looking back type songs. What Did You Buy? - Jerome - 16-01-2011 I do have it somewhere in the house (finding it would take hours!) but I think this one is better. Haven't played SFTWC for a long time so I guess I probably don't like it a whole lot but to be quite honest I haven't given it enough listening time. Favourite EJ albums remain 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' & 'Blue Moves'. His 'Live in Australia' is awesome, especially the first 2 tracks. What Did You Buy? - Music Head - 16-01-2011 thanks Jerome. said back awhile ago, at this point in their careers I think I have more respect for Leon than Elton. But I was a big Elton fan for years. What Did You Buy? - Jerome - 16-01-2011 Me too - still am, but mainly his 70's stuff. I guess I am firmly stuck in that era. I don't hear a lot these days that has the same creativity. Starting to sound like a stuck record. Geez do you remember how annoying that was? Or when you bought a 4-track cassette of your favourite band and the damn machine chewed up the tape and you spent hours trying to fix the damn thing. Thank God for CD's! Yea, the one good thing for cd's I guess. I still miss my packaging though. And the only records I have that stick or skip are ones that I have bought used. What Did You Buy? - Jerome - 16-01-2011 I agree - the loss of the artwork side of things is a pity. Bought many a good (and crap) album simply because I liked the artwork. Impulse buyers unite!
