Looking Back At Some Classics - Jerome - 20-12-2012

Music Head Wrote:#429 - Billy Joel - Piano Man - 1973

running recap for me - 3's=36, 2's=28, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: Piano Man
Written by Billy Joel
Produced by Michael Stewart
Chart action: #25 US, #20 Australia, #10 Canada

the players:
Billy Joel – piano, vocals
other people playing things

A brilliant song writer is born. Too bad the masses were yet to recognize it. Billy had paid his dues as a
lounge pianist as the song documents. All of those depicted in the song were real life people that he had
met during those days. A song about failed dreams which is where Joel thought he was in life after a
failure with his first album blamed on stupidity by those that mastered it at the wrong speed. Obvious by
listening to anything from Cold Spring Harbor. He relegated himself to the bar circuit while fighting the
label heads to release him from his contract. He then signed with Columbia and the rest is history.

Lyrics

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be

He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while

And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man what are you doing here?"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

This is about as classic as classic tracks get. This guy, although famous and successful, is often forgotten by the music press.

Goodnight Saigon
Always a Woman
Honesty
Allentown
We Didn't Start the Fire
A Matter of Trust
The Downeaster Alexa

the list is endless........

Powerful stuff - http://youtu.be/LVlDSzbrH5M

Goodnight Saigon, Downeaster Alexa and Honesty would have to be in top five BJ tracks of all time also...great writer/artist

and everyone seems to forget those great albums of his from the 80s like "nylon curtain" and "stormfront"...which are almost perfection in terms of songs

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 21-12-2012

yeh...Isley Brothers are okay i guess, this song gets "**" from me also.

for me, their version of Stephen Stills "love the one youre with" is their greatest track.

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 21-12-2012

I like the song and The Smiths ....actually totally forgot about them until now!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:The Smiths????....
i've really got to be in the mood to listen to these guys...sort of a love/hate relationship happening here.

those guys are still going though...Johnny Marr(guitarist/writer) still does well as he crops up on other artists albums consistantly, while singer/writer Morrissey still tours and releases albums as a solo artist, personally i havent heard any of his solo material for twenty years now...

this song gets "***" from me when im in the mood and "**" when im not in the mood for them

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 21-12-2012

One of the milestones of Rock N Roll IMHO! Great song sung by an even greater artist!!!!!!
Music Head Wrote:#430 - Elvis Presley - Blue Suede Shoes - 1956

running recap for me - 3's=35, 2's=28, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: Elvis Presley
Written by Carl Perkins
Produced by Steve Sholes
Chart action: #20 US

the players:
Elvis Presley – guitar, vocals
Scotty Moore - guitar
Bill Black - bass
D J Fontana - drums

Carl Perkins wrote it, recorded it first, and scored a higher chart placement at #2, but it remains one of
Elvis's bst known songs. It was Johnny Cash that actually had the idea for the song and suggested it to
Carl. He wrote it one night and recorded it two days later at the legendary Sun studios. His version was
still riding high when Elvis gave it a try. Both Carl and Elvis performed the song on live tv on the same
night on different shows. Elvis had departed Sun Records on good terms and signed with RCA. Out of respect to Sun founder Sam Phillips and Perkins, Elvis requested that his version be held back from being released as a single while Carls was still peaking. It was not released until 9 months after Perkins original.

Lyrics

Well, it's one for the money,
Two for the show,
Three to get ready,
Now go, cat, go.

But don't you step on my blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my Blue suede shoes.

Well, you can knock me down,
Step in my face,
Slander my name
All over the place.

Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Don't you step on my Blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

You can burn my house,
Steal my car,
Drink my liquor
From an old fruitjar.

Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Don't you step on my blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

A very good song...I like it!
Music Head Wrote:#428 - Isley Brothers - It's Your Thing - 1969

running recap for me - 3's=36, 2's=29, 1's=8
this one - **
from the album: It's Our Thing
Written by Isley Brothers
Produced by Isley Brothers
Chart action: #2 US, #30 UK, #3 Canada

the players:
Ronald Isley - lead vocal
Rudolph Isley - backing Vocal
O'Kelly Isley - backing vocal
George Moreland - drums
Ernie Isley - bass
Charles "Skip" Pitts - guitar
Herb Rooney - piano
George Patterson - saxophone

Never a big fan, even of this song, but I'll give the boys their due. Good funk classic for the
day. After bailing from Motown, feeling they were being treated as a second tier act, to
heavyweights Tempations and Four Tops, the brothers started their own label and released their
biggest hit. Sued by Motown's Berry Gordy, claiming he owned the song. Settled out of court. I
think Berry backed down. btw, they actually were a second tier act to the Temps and Tops.

Lyrics

It's your thing, do what you wanna do.
I can't tell you, who to sock it to.
It's your thing, do what you wanna do.
I can't tell you, who to sock it to.

If you want me to love you, maybe I will.
Believe me woman, it ain't no big deal.
You need love now, just as bad as I do.
Make's me no difference now, who you give your thing to.

It's your thing, do what you wanna do.
I can't tell you, who to sock it to.
It's your thing, do what you wanna do.
I can't tell you, who to sock it to.

It's your thing, do what you wanna do.
I can't tell you, who to sock it to.
It's your thing, do what you wanna do.
I can't tell you, who to sock it to.

I'm not trying to run your life,I know you wanna do what's right.
Give your love now, to whoever you choose.
How can you love, with the stuff you use now.

#427 - Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But A G Thang - 1993

running recap for me - 3's=36, 2's=30, 1's=8
this one - **
from the album: The Chronic
Written by Snoop Dog
Produced by Dr. Dre
Chart action: #2 US, #31 UK

the players:
Dr. Dre - vocal
Snoop Dog - Vocal

Hey, why doesn't it say "featuring"? Was this before they startd that crap? Snoop Dog is the
other rapper on this track. The bass line is what sucks me in, and it's a ripoff of some track
I never heard of, I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You by Leon Haywood. This is the first single
from Dre's debut album. All it takes is one hit and you're in the club.

Lyrics

One, two, three and to the fo'
Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre are at the do'
Ready to make an entrance, so back on up
(Cause you know we 'bout had to rip shit up)
Gimme the microphone first, so I can bust like a bubble
Compton and Long Beach together, now you know you in trouble
Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baaaaabay!
Two loc'ed out G's so we're craaaaazay!
Death Row is the label that paaaaays me!
Unfadable, so please don't try to fade this (Hell yeah)
But, uh, back to the lecture at hand
Perfection is perfected, so I'm 'a let 'em understand
From a young G's perspective
And before me dig out a bitch I have ta' find a contraceptive
You never know she could be earnin' her man,
And learnin' her man, and at the same time burnin' her man
Now you know I ain't wit that shit, Lieutenant
Ain't no pussy good enough to get burnt while I'm up in it
(yeah) Now that's realer than real-deal Holyfield
And now all you hookas and ho's know how I feel
Well if it's good enough to get broke off a proper chunk
I'll take a small piece of some of that funky stuff

It's like this and like that and like this and uh
It's like that and like this and like that and uh
It's like this and like that and like this and uh
Dre, creep to the mic like a phantom

Well I'm peepin', and I'm creepin', and I'm creep-in'
But I damn near got caught, 'cause my beeper kept beepin'
Now it's time for me to make my impression felt
So sit back, relax, and strap on your seatbelt
You never been on a ride like this befo'
With a producer who can rap and control the maestro
At the same time with the dope rhyme that I kick
You know, and I know, I flow some ol funky shit
To add to my collection, the selection
Symbolizes dope, take a toke, but don't choke
If ya' do, ya' have no clue
O' what me and my homey Snoop Dogg came to do

It's like this and like that and like this and uh
It's like that and like this and like that and uh
It's like this, and we ain't got no love for those
So jus' chill, 'til the next episode

Fallin' back on that ass with a hellified gangsta' lean
Gettin' funky on the mic like a' old batch o' collard greens
It's the capital S, oh yes, the fresh N-double O-P
D-O-double G-Y D-O-double G ya' see
Showin' much flex when it's time to wreck a mic
pimpin' ho's and clockin' a grip like my name was Dolomite
Yeah, and it don't quit
I think they in a mood for some mothafuckin' G shit
So Dre. (What up Dogg?)
We gotta give 'em what dey want (What's that, G?)
We gotta break 'em off somethin' (Hell yeah)
And it's gotta be bumpin' (City of Compton!)

It's where it takes place so I'm a ask your attention
Mobbin like a mothafucka but I ain't lynchin
Droppin' the funky shit that's makin the sucka niggaz mumble
When I'm on the mic, it's like a cookie, they all crumble
Try to get close, and your ass'll get smacked
My mothafuckin homie Doggy Dogg has my back
Never let me slip, 'cause if I slip, then I'm slippin'
But if I got my Nina, then you know I'm straight trippin'
And I'm a continue to put the rap down, put the mack down
And if your bitches talk shit, I have ta' put the smack down
Yeah, and ya' don't stop
I told you I'm just like a clock when I tick and I tock
But I'm never off, always on, 'til the break dawn
C-O-M-P-T-O-N, and the city they call Long Beach
Puttin' the shit together
Like my nigga D.O.C., no one can do it better

Like this, that and this and uh
It's like that and like this and like that and uh
It's like this, and we ain't got no love for those
So jus' chill, 'til the next episode
