Jim Croce died on this day in 1973. He and five others were killed when the chartered aircraft they were in clipped a tree at the end of the runway on takeoff and crashed. Included in that number was Maury Meuhleisen who is absolutely deserving of recognition for his role next to Jim Croce both on stage and in studio â they had developed a great rapport. Maury was 24, and Jim had turned 30. What a tragic loss.

Jaco Pastorius, jazz bassist extraordinaire, died on this day in 1987 at the age of 35 after a run in with a bouncer and a subsequent brain haemorrhage; he had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which, at the time, was not well understood. The bouncer pleaded guilty to manslaughter and ultimately spent four months in prison before being paroled.
Pastorius was a hugely talented and very troubled man, and his name is associated with superior bass mastery and technique. He made quite a few solo albums and also worked with Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell, as well as being known for his tenure with Weather Report, as composer, showman and arranger.

1980, John Bonham,
drummer with Led Zeppelin, died aged 32 after a heavy drinking session. âBonzoâ was found dead at guitarists Jimmy Page's house of what was described as asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption, (40 shots in 4 hours). During live sets his drum solo, âMoby Dick,â would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of his bare hands. In 2007, Ludwig issued a limited edition drum kit in Bonham's memory.

Benjamin Orr (born Orzechowski), died on this day in 2000, from pancreatic cancer. He was 53.
Bassist and co-lead vocalist for The Cars which was formed by him and Ric Ocasek in 1976 after theyâd cut their teeth in other, less successful bands. Ben sang lead on some of The Cars biggest hits, including âDriveâ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuZA6qiJVfU â¦and this â âJust What I Neededâ â [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsPh-EgH65M"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsPh-EgH65M

After The Cars disbanded he worked with his own band ORR, and some side projects, and it seems a lot of his own material was never officially released.
