by Springsteen's high standards its very average, but The Rising is a great album IMO

I would have to agree with this. Not his best but much better than the competition. Love that album Smile

#496 - Jackson Browne - Running On Empty - 1977

me - ***
from the album Running On Empty
Written by Jackson Browne
Produced by Jackson Browne
Chart action: #11 Billboard Pop

the players:
Jackson Browne – guitar, piano, keyboard, vocals
Rosemary Butler – vocals
Craig Doerge – keyboard
Doug Haywood – bass, background vocals
Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar – guitar, percussion, vocals, harmony vocals
Russ Kunkel – drums, snare drums, cardboard box, hi hat
David Lindley – fiddle, guitar, violin, steel guitar, vocals, lap steel guitar
Leland Sklar – bass

On the chart for 17 weeks. An excellent live recording from his 5th and best selling album. This was the lead single
and sent the album to #3 here. A Grammy nomination for best song losing to Barry Manilows Copacabana. That was a
slap in the face. Even worse was losing Album Of The Year to Saturday Night Fever. This song is one of the five on
the album that were recorded live in concert. It is about life on the road in a band, as is most of the entire
album. Probably Jacksons signature song for most, becoming his third best selling single, after Doctor My Eyes and
Somebodys Baby. Guess I could always relate to this song because the year references match up to my age. That made
it more meaningful for me. The song got a resurgence in 1994 after being used in the film Forrest Gump. Another
political tie in with this one. John McCains 2008 presidential campaign decided to use the song in a tv ad without
getting permission. Bad move with Jackson filing a law suit. Settled out of court with an apology and some cash.

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In '65 I was seventeen and running up 101
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In '69 I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
Running into the sun but I'm running behind

A 24 carat gold classic. Not a bad track on the album.

Running on Empty is one of the neat vinyls I've picked up over the last year. Very good Smile

I like the way some of the tracks are recorded in Holiday Inns, one on a bus, a couple in concert. About as real as a road album gets. Speaking of which it is excellent music for the road. Used to go up to a log cabin in the woods many moons ago and this would always be playing in the car. Also like his Late For The Sky album. And then there's a song on one of his albums (not sure which) about a Mexican girl (I think) - something Paloma??

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 11-10-2012

yes I like the song!

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-10-2012

yep..i love Jackson Browne also...very underappreciated artist IMO, but made some of the best music around back in the day...
