What Are You Listening To? - gryphon - 22-08-2011 ^^ A good listen and every track is excellent.................Fascinating that you mention Linda but she did not join Magna until 1980 and this was made in 1972/3. I have checked he cover many times and I have pressed MR Simpson hard to find the name and origin of what I believe is the presence of a female vocalist on that album...............Chris claims that the cover is correct and that all the people listed are male !!!!!!!!!!!!.............................However, I am sure there is a female vocalist on their and I suspect but can't prove that it is his first wife Mary ............. Talking of people on it there are two members of the Eagles on their on Father John if you listen hard you can just about hear them. What Are You Listening To? - TraceNspace - 24-08-2011 Johnny Flynn - Been Listening I was finally prodded by SteveO into buying this whole album and I can't stop listening to it. I've been in a melancholy sort of mood but it actually picks me up out of that in a way that's not too startling I guess. I'm not in the mood for cheerfulness so I skip the first track but the rest I find soothing. It makes me feel good when I recommend an album and a member likes it !!!! It hasn't happened too often but when it does it's a great feeling ! I'm surprised more people haven't listened to Flynn ???? I haven't listened to his first album A Larum yet but will...someday...lol SteveO What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 24-08-2011 gryphon Wrote:^^ A good listen and every track is excellent.................Fascinating that you mention Linda but she did not join Magna until 1980 and this was made in 1972/3. I swore I heard a beautiful female voice on Lords of the Ages !!!!! I'll have to go and listen for the fourth time !.... unless it's a guy doing a high falsetto voice to duplicate a female voice ( the way the group The Antlers sing...male vocalist but sounds like a female ...intentionally...I like it). The personnel information is sketchy at best for Magna Carta and I just presumed it was Linda Simpson ! I shouldn't have presumed without knowing for sure. I should have asked you before hand, Gryph ! What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 25-08-2011 ![]() BOB DYLAN "john wesley harding" 1968, from the Music Head library yes i do know this album, as pointed out to MH when i picked it, i hadnt heard it for a couple of decades and thought i should reaquaint myself with this masterpiece!...this was also one of the couple of times i indulged in some THC with MH...and who better to do it with than MH and Dylan!!! this one is His Bobness at his creative peak IMO,great lyics and delivery from the 'greatest musical poet' of the rock era. great sparse acoustics from a man at the top of his game! when rating tracks both MH and I took it in turns to give each track a score on everything we listened to...some tracks we were at opposite poles, some albums our scores were quite different but in this case we both rated it 2.5, which is in the "love" range with all tracks recieving the identical score from both of us. as a footnote:John Wesley Harding is/was the grandfather(or great grandfather) of folk singer Tim Hardin...Tim dropped the "g" off Harding for some reason! What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 25-08-2011 ![]() NICOLETTE LARSON "rose of my heart" 1986....from the MH vinyl library im glad one of Nicolette's albums popped up as i was going through MH's albums as i only know her from her Neil Young penned song "lotta love" and the work she did on his "comes a time" album. all in all a nice country based album from this girl with a beautiful voice and vocal control. there's not one track on here that MH and I dont like and that shows with the score it gets from both of us. MH 2.3(almost a love score) and me a 2.1 on a first listen. the best of the songs from both our ratings is: that's how you know when love's right http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbQMkt4M-aM audio What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 25-08-2011 ![]() OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN "let me be there" 1973,vinyl. from the MH vinyl library! never having heard an ONJ studio album i was keen to see if she could cut the mustard as an album artist, and i thought this one looked good with numerous well known cover versions from "me and bobby mcgee","if not for you","take me home country roads", "help me make it through the night","angel of the morning" etc etc but both MH and i were dissapointed in that we both rated this one a dismal 1.6 just missing the "like" rating of 1.7! she just fails to add anything new to these tracks or even make the songs 'hers' for some reason which is a tad dissapointing IMO. only two of the ten tracks get full *** from both of us and six others get the dreaded * rating, so on that point i will stick to my "best of" set. the two tracks we both rated full marks to came as no surprise to either of us and the links are below....and are truly two of the greatest country songs of all time! let me be there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I89lfJsW3bE live banks of the ohio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbOK5dpRuvw live What Are You Listening To? - mtthwibrahim - 27-08-2011 Pink Moon-Nick Drake the most beautiful album ever What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 29-08-2011 JOHNNY PAYCHECK "heartbreak, tenn"....1972, from the Music Head vinyl library now this is weird? i have several sites i go to-to find album covers and not one of them has a picture of this album's cover???? and all-music dont even include the album in the Paycheck 'discography'???? ![]() thanks to "evilB" for finding the cover art for me!!!! the Ohio born Paycheck started singing at age six and by age 10 was winning local talent contests, by 15 he had released his first record, the only two things i knew about JP before selecting this album for the turntable was his hit single "take this job and shove it" and his problems with abiding by the law!!! anyway this 1972 release is somewhere around his sixth to eighth album release, featuring some nice country ballads and also some upbeat country tunes also. the track "A-11" was a US country #1 hit and was the first of seven country #1's in a row for him, it also happens to be MH's favourite track on this album. the opening title track is also a cracker according to both myself and Music Head, however, my favourite one here is the tear jerker "(what's gonna happen to) the little folks"....a song that deals with divorce and the effect that event can have on children, which pulled a bit at my heartstrings! MH rates this one 2.4 which hits the "love" range, i rated it 2.1 on a first airing, and again, this album has spurred me on to delve into the Paycheck collection further from the album: heartbreak, tennessee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UnsThgA-Qs audio A-11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nw7jIaRDgA live What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 01-09-2011 ![]() On the laptop. Fifth album from this collective with a more than fluid line-up, released in 1990. It's Dub, Jim, but not as we know it... Dub Reggae with influences from all over the world, which makes for some exotic combinations. This isn't too far away from some of Jah Wobble's music. I like this one a lot, so it's onto the Buy List. AllMusic 4+/5 stars. |
