PAJAMA CLUB "pajama club" 2011.
not really a Neil Finn solo set, moreso a collaboration between him, his wife Sharon and his nextdoor neighbours...
the album was primarily bourne out of a few jam sessions in his home studio after dinner, a few glasses of wine and a joint or two thrown in for good measure...
there are some good Crowded House sounding tracks on this on in tracks 2,5,6,8 and 9...the others simply sound like they were recorded, jams with simple,stupid lyrics that never got finished properly.
sure there are some nice boppy,poppy,catchy beats happening here and some interesting sounds that you would not associate with Neil Finn, but overall it does sound a little too much like it was intended to sound...a loose collection of bits and pieces, thus it sounds messy with little thought gone into the final process.
not really a good album, and certainly no great Finn songs on this one, in fact this one comes out as probably the worst album of his career!

TIM FINN "the view is worth the climb" 2011.
so both Finn Brothers released albums in 2011, and for the first time a Tim Finn album actually beats a Neil Finn album when compared to latest releases by both...
but,
is the view worth the climb?...not in my opinion if judged by this album it aint!
again, another Tim Finn album without any truly classic songs on it..he seems to struggle to make anything really great when he is not working with younger borther Neil.
almost all the tracks are piano based ballads, rarely getting up to anything above walking speed, lyrically though, Tim is still as good as anyone in the game, shame his music lacks spark, maybe he is just a boring sod or he is happy and content as he heads towards the big 60!.
only two real dud tracks on here, the rest barely make the passing grade, and had it not been for his lyrics, they most certainly would not have done so.
maybe its time for me to throw my Finn chips on the table and walk away from them, but the moment i do that they are sure to both make a great record.
for some strange reason there never seems to be many links to Tim's songs, this one only has one!

NEIL FINN "dizzy heights" 2014
Neil's third solo album under his own name
and comes out hot on the heels of a joint live album, Goin' Your Way, with Paul Kelly.
as Neil gets older he is making his albums family affairs with wife Sharon and sons Elroy and Liam
all playing their part on his recordings.
another factor affecting his latter albums is that he is getting more experimental in his music.
this album is not different, the first half, overall, is what I call arty-farty, even avant-garde for want of
a better word. the second half isn't as pop friendly as the Crowded House material but at least it could pass for
being radio friendly.
no singles released off this one but his fan base did ensure it made top10 in Australia and New Zealand.
its not really a good place to enter his career, in fact its really not a great place for fans to go neither.

NEIL FINN "out of silence" 2017
his fourth solo album.
a piano based orchestrated melancholy collection of songs.
album's making was live-streamed on his website each Friday for several weeks as he rehearsed/demo'd the tracks so fans could see the recording/writing process...an excellent ploy to build up hype and interest.
a week after the last broadcast the album was released.
so the songs have an ethereal quality about them with the multilayered vocal tracks,
it even hinges on a spiritual almost choir-like feel to it.
one track features older sibling Tim which is a nice surprise, but alas, it is the least likeable one here.
all up, a quality album from a dude almost forty years into his recording career.
