On the laptop.

Highly regarded singer from Senegal. This is his fourth release from 1990.

Best known for his hit duet with Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds - N'dour was championed in his early career by Peter Gabriel. I haven't heard much of his music, and what I have heard would fall into the category of having been tailored to first world tastes somewhat. This one definitely has a more West African feel, and his vocals are all in his native tongue as far as I could hear.

Good music, which supports his songs very nicely.

Another for the Buy List.

RoviMusic 5/5 stars.

Didn't realise that, SteveO.

Fela tried to do the same in Nigeria. Must be something in the water over there...

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-02-2012

the first album by Johnny on Columbua Records after leaving Sun Records back in 1958.
again, the cd version has numerous bonus tracks, but being true to the original album all im doing here is the album as it was originally released.
a couple od dud tracks on here for me, and that is unusual for me to say that about The Man In Black, one being the terrible "frankie & Johnny"...man, i hate that song whoever sings it, including Elvis Presley, though Brook Benton's version does come mighty close to a "like" rating!
really, not much to say here other than it is a typical JC album, plenty of that boom-chicka-boom sound he developed early on in his career, and that fantastic baritone voice he has.
still, this one does contain the all time classic "dont take your guns to town" along with his original recordings of "supper-time", "pickin'-time" and "i still miss someone", all of which he re-recorded at other times through his career.
this is Johnny at his first career peak(late 50s),the other peaks were late 60s and mid 90s IMO with the Folsom/San Quentin albums and the Rick Rubin albums respectively.
all-up a good place to start with the career of one of country/pop-crossover musics most prolific artists of the rock era.
allmusic rate this one 4.5/5 which equates to 2.7 here, i havent given it anywhere near that score, but i like it nevertheless.
as a footnote, check out the links to Dont Take Your Guns To Town for an additional link whereby JC changed the words for a cool version on Sesame Street with Big Bird and The Count!

That's it !! No more Fela for quite a while.

Brilliant collection, which has been a great crash course in the career of one of Africa's towering musical giants.

Follow-up to the original compilation from 2010, released in 2011.

This is only a single disc, to the original's 2 discs.

More unreleased and rare Dub Reggae from the madcap star producer Perry, largely recorded at his fabled Black Ark studios.

Perry's idiosyncratic production style is all over this album, which is full of dense sounds that push perilously close to the point of distortion. Sounds like it was recorded in a broom cupboard, but works so well it really doesn't matter.

Very good collection.
