TRAVIS "12 memories" cd, 2003

album chart placings: #3 UK, #41 US, #42 AU.

singles:
"re-offender".....................no chart entry
"the beautiful occupation"...#48 UK.
"love will come through".....#28 UK.

Scottish band's fourth studio set...nowhere near as good as their second album "the man who"...
same old dreamy, laidback, mellow sounds ans vocals as their other albums...thus, nothing new, nothing gained!
these guys released an album earlier this year which crept into the UK top10, so they still sell out there, but not here in my house no more...

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: paperclips
best track: re-offender

tracks:

1. quicksand **
2. the beautiful occupation **
3. re-offender **

IMELDA MAY "mayhem" cd, 2010.

album chart placings: #1 UK, #46 AU, #108 US.

singles chart placings:
"johnny got a boom boom"...#88 UK.
"psycho"............................no chart placings.
"kentish town waltz"............#25 UK.
"mayhem"..........................#24 UK.
"inside out"........................no chart placings.
"sneaky freak"....................no chart placings.

Irish born Imelda's third album...wasnt sure whether to put this here or in the jazz/big band threads as theres a lot of that going on here, along with dixieland, rockabilly, and a touch of what you'd call alternative...
to describe her vocals i'd say...somewhere between Adele and Amy Winehouse, in fact the sticker on the album quotes "mojo" magazine and states a genuinely great voice that revs like a hotrod at the start line!...and that just about sums her up IMO also...
all the songs on here were either written by Imelda or mambers of her band except one...and that is a cover of the Soft Cell classic Tainted Love in which Imelda mixes jazz and rockabilly to update it and it works quite well, well, better than the Marilyn Manson version a few years ago anyway...
pretty hard to pick a favourite off this one from the three love tracks but im going for the beautiful ballad this time round...
album scores a respectable 2.2 from me, here's a couple of links starting with my favourite track "kentish town waltz"

VIOLENT FEMMES "hallowed ground" cd, 1984

album chart placings: no chart action anywhere!

singles chart placings:
"its gonna rain"....no chart placings!

the Femmes' second album and their best IMO....
the album starts off with a country tinge and over the space of four or so tracks it seguels into their trademark sound...
im still not sure whether they were being serious with their country material or taking the piss out of the genre???...
all up though, not a bad album for these guys and the only one i can truly say that i like!

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: i hear the rain
best track: i know its true but im sorry to say

tracks:

1. country death song **
2. i hear the rain *
3. never tell *
4. jesus walking on the water **
5. i know its true but im sorry to say **

BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE II "the globe" cd, 1991.

album chart placings: #10 AU, #61 UK, #76 US.

singles chart placings:
"rush".......................#1 UK, #1 AU, #1 NZ, #32 US.
"the globe"................# #8 AU, #10 NZ, #72 US.
"innocent child"..........#67 AU.

this techno/trance/dance/ music loops/ samples with guitar riffs was about as far from Mick Jones old band The Clash as AC/DC are from opera...but it works wonderfully IMO...he did do this sort of experimentation with funk/dance type stuff in the latter days of the Clash so he was obviously thinking outside the square when he was a punk....
i was actually surprised to find these guys were more popular out here than anywhere else...
also, ive always thought of these guys were a pre-cursor to Damien albarns group Gorillaz...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: cant wait/live
best track: the globe

tracks:

1. rush ***
2. cant wait/live **
3. i dont know **
4. the globe ***
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPrPNpzLHIk vevo video
5. innocent child **
6. green grass **
7. kool-aid **
8. in my dreams **
9. when the time comes **
10.the tea party **

ELVIS COSTELLO "the man:the very best of...." cd, 1986

the first compilation of Elvis' music(and still the best one IMO)....
contains seventeen of his hits from the first decade of his career....
such a large variety of styles in his music, you dont really notice it as much on an album by album basis but when they are presented as a singles collection you truly get the scope of what he can do....and IMO,Elvis has few peers with his consistany, quality and allround versitility, a true living legend of rock music in the last thirty five or so years....
of the seventeen tracks on offer, thirteen get love scores from me,four of them i like, so this equates to 2.8 from me...
this is essential purchasing for the casual listener or a new listener to Elvis' career...
