Spent yesterday up in the mountains of Madeira in a place called the Nun's Valley. Tried some other local plonk made from chestnuts. Now I know where the expression 'flying nun' comes from!

Off to Lisbon today to see some of the landmark sites.

Well, back from Portugal, and I have to say it was one of the cheapest holidays I have been on in the last 10 years. Madeira is a world of it's own. Quite stunning. Lisbon was a little more hectic but I did manage to take in the Fado festival (Portuguese folk music best described as a kind of longing to return home) in Alfama over the last couple of days and it was quite an experience. There's a lot to see in Lisbon. I only got to see a fraction of what I intended to. Still a great trip and a place I would like to return to at some future date. Oh well, party over, back to work.................(weep weep).

Don't remember how I first got to listen to Amália Rodrigues, but suffice to say, that was enough - she was a fantastic singer. The word to describe that indescribable longing is 'saudade' -

While I can appreciate the vocal side of Fado, the instrumental side of things was far more interesting to me. I ended up in some Fado restaurant in Alfama on Saturday night and they had this old duck singing for her supper. I have to admit she was very entertaining, really a lot of fun, and I had a chat with her afterwards and she came across as one of those ladies that is larger than life, a total scream. A pure prima donna. When I get to the 'Grab a Granny' stage (not too far off now) I will revisit Lisbon. But the guys doing the instrumental stuff around the corner were exceptional. Regardless, I had a bloody good time and I found the Portuguese people more accommodating than most in my travels so far. Incidentally, met a lot of Portuguese people who had lived in SA at one point or another. Bought a couple of art prints from a lady who had spent most of her life in Brakpan of all places. Go figure......

And to think, I have spent thousands of dollars on therapy over the years and all that was really required was a woman with a large collection of G-strings..........

And the massacre continues. This time in Las Vegas. Change the gun laws people. Pure and simple. Until you do this will not stop. Not ever. At the time of posting there are now 50 dead and 200 injured. Madness.
