What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 18-03-2012

you already knew "workingclass man" is my favourite on here...but guessing Ride the Night Away was a misprint like Bound For Glory was??!!

anyway, glad you liked Chisl and Jimmy.

i guess allmusic isnt up to date as Jimmy released another album late last year also and Cold Chisel have one in the works now apparently

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "wrecking ball" cd,2012.

yeh,yeh...its only a week old and only a week and a bit since i did this as a new release, but i have had this one on constantly in my car since i got it, thus time to post it here!
i gave this 2.2 as a new release, but now....i love this one!
some real good beats on here, some real air punching moments in the catchy chorus lines, some folk, some rock but ovcerall ALL Springsteen is stamped everywhere...lyrics to make you think about the state of things, obviously The Boss is refering to the state of the US, its economy, the Iraq war, house foreclosures, the up coming election in november, these are all current concerns for the working man in the US but they also hold true for the most part for the blue collar workers worldwide...
some Gospel choruses here amongst what i would call folk-punk...yes folk-punk!...theres more than a passing resemblance to Dropkick Murphy's on a few tracks and also Jersey's latest rock band The Gaslight Anthem...both them and The Boss seem to have come out of the same mould..
on Death To My Hometown he again highlights the 9/11 incident as he did on his The Rising album a decade ago...im guessing that when you live in or near NY then those events on that tragic day in 2001 are still pretty fresh in your mind.
the one thing i like about Springsteen the most is that with all his millions of dollars, his mansions etc etc he still sounds like he is 'working class' and singing for 'the people by the people' attitude.
also, on Land Of Hope And Dreams, saxophonist Clarence Clemmons plays the last sax solo before his untimely death last year...in the linear notes to the album there is an extremely heartfelt couple of paragraphs long note written by The Boss for his long time friend..almost brings a tear to the eye!
all up, this is one hell of an album, think i said this time last year that Adele's "21" would be the album of the year, well, im sticking my neck on the ole chopping board again and suggesting that this one will be "the album of 2012", it may not sell in the quantities that "21" did but it will be the must have album of this year IMO, and it will probably scoop a handful of Grammy's this time next year.....

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 21-03-2012

from my library (vinyl)

His Bobness with his seventeenth album. Still at his best for me. How many artists can you say that about? Rolling
Thunder Review lineup with the brilliant Emmylou Harris providing a lot of the backup vocals and violinst Scarlet
Rivera whose playing is dominant on most tracks. Bob teames up with Jaques Levy in writing most of these tracks.
Never heard from him again. Two real life story songs, which Dylan was the master of. Hurricane, the story of Ruben
Carter, who Bob claims was framed for murder. That was never proven, but his conviction was overturned on appeal,
twice. The other Joey, the story of mobster Joseph Gallo, Both songs brought some controversy. Tough call with Isis
and Sara as favorites. Depends on the day I guess. Sara being the most moving as it is writen for his wife who
filed for divorce shortly after the albums release. It yielded two singles of a scaled down for radio Hurricane
(how can you butcher a story song?), and the fair Mozambique. Neither charted that well but the album was another
#1 in his belt and a #3 in England.

Worst Track - Romance In Durango

Best Track - Sara

I laid on a dune I looked at the sky
When the children were babies and played on the beach
You came up behind me, I saw you go by
You were always so close and still within reach.

Sara, Sara
Whatever made you want to change your mind
Sara, Sara
So easy to look at, so hard to define.

I can still see them playing with their pails in the sand
They run to the water their buckets to fill
I can still see the shells falling out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.

Sara, Sara
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life
Sara, Sara
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.

Sleeping in the woods by a fire in the night
Drinking white rum in a Portugal bar
Them playing leapfrog and hearing about Snow White
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.

Sara, Sara
It's all so clear, I could never forget
Sara, Sara
Loving you is the one thing I'll never regret.

I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through
Staying up for day in the Chelsea Hotel
Writing "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.

Sara, Sara
Wherever we travel we're never apart
Sara, Sara
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you ? I don't know
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.

Sara, Sara
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress
Sara, Sara
You must forgive me my unworthiness.

Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore
You always responded when I needed your help
You gimme a map and a key to your door.

Sara, Sara
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow
Sara, Sara
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

EDDIE COCHRAN "rock 'n' roll legend" cd,2008.

Eddie is one of the forgotten icons of 1950s rock and roll. with hits like "c'mon everybody", "summeritme blues","three steps to heaven" and "twenty flight rock" he helped is an intregal part of rocks origins.
this one is a collection of tracks from 1957 and overlapping into early 1958. only "twenty flight rock" from the above mentioned four tracks appear here...not that thats a bad thing as this one does allow the listener to hear some of his formative recordings...if you like 1950s rock n roll, this one will appeal to you as it does to me. several little gems on here, allof which recieve "***". only one track i do not like on here...the terrible "have i told you lately that i love you"...IMO this is Ricky Nelson's song and no-one else can match his version incuding Elvis Presley.
not sure Eddie had the variety to succeed as a major star in music, but by dying in 1960 in a car crash in the UK he has cemented his place in history as one of those singers that lived fast and died young.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: have i told you lately that i love you?
best track: proud of you

tracks:

1. sittin in the balcony **
2. drivein-show **
3. twenty flight rock ***
4. am i blue **

7. dark lonely street **
8. one kiss **
9. mean when im mad ***
10.cradle baby **
11.undying love **
12.im alone because i love you **
13.stockings and shoes **
14.proud of you ***

[Image: 220px-Elton_John_-_Honky_Ch%C3%A2teau.jpg]

Elton's fifth and his first U.S. #1 album, with a #2 showing across the pond. Honky Cat was the #8 single here that
drove it. Probably the transition album that turned Elton into a rock star. Also the first album to include his
lineup of Murray, Johnstone and Olsson on all tracks. Other than the horn section, The only outside musician used
was Jean-Luc Ponty on violin. The only thing I don't like on here is the dreadful Amy. Five love tracks push it to
a love album with the beautiful Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters taking the best. Rocket Man may be the most well known.
Honky Cat, Mellow and Salvation round out those love tracks. Elton showed his vastness of styles on this album and
it remains a favorite of the critics. He was one of my favorites for many years.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Amy

Best Track - Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters

Now I know, "Spanish harlem" are not just pretty words
to say.
I thought I knew, but now I know that rose trees never grow,
in New York city.

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true,
You stand at the edge, while people run you through.
And I thank the Lord, there's people out there like you,
I thank the Lord there's people out there like you.

While Mona Lisas and mad hatters,
sons of bankers, sons of lawyers,
turn around and say, "good morning" to the night.
For unless they see the sky, but they can't and that is why,
they know not if it's dark out side or light.

This Broadway's got, its got a lot of songs to sing,
if I knew the tunes I might join in.
I go my way alone, grow my own,
my own seeds shall be sown, in New York city.
Subways no way , for a good man to go down,
Rich man can ride, and the hobo he can drown.

And I thank the Lord for the people I have found,
I thank the Lord for the people I have found.

While Mona Lisas and mad hatters,
sons of bankers, sons of lawyers,
turn around and say, "good morning" to the night.
For unless they see the sky, but they can't and that is why,
they know not if it's dark out side or light.

While Mona Lisas and mad hatters,
sons of bankers, sons of lawyers,
turn around and say, "good morning" to the night.
For unless they see the sky, but they can't and that is why,

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 23-03-2012

back to MH's Elton John post a bit further up the page...

just got round to hearing a few of the tracks that i do not know....

pretty darn good IMO..dont really have much of Elton's 1970s works apart from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and what i have on best of sets, was sort of too young to know who he really was back then, thus only have his 80s albums, and a few others from the 90s and 00's....so a look at his earlier material is on the cards now...

awesome talent, and obviously at his best in the 70s and early 80s IMO.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Wrecking Ball

Our esteemed MD member and my mate, Crazy-Horse has previously reviewed The Boss' new album Wrecking Ball released this month.

I tend to agree with him with respect to his excellent review! This is the highlight of album releases so far this year ! Now other artists will have to step up to the plate.

Bruce Springsteen's seventeenth studio album certainly has many themes at work here. This is his first release withiut his long time friend Clarence Clemons at his side, although his hard rock sax is heard on two tracks.

Here's my take on the album's thirteen tracks with a brief synopsis as Crazy-Horse has covered it all before in fine fashion.

1. We Take Care of Our Own - The catchiest song on the album. A call to arms rock anthem so to speak reminiscent of Born in the USA. This will be a popular crowd pleaser during his upcoming North American tour.

2. Easy Money - another uptempo rocker that will probably be released as a single.

3. Shackled and Drawn - another rocker with a good melody.

4. Jack of All Trades - I hear Ray Charles in this one..slow ballad with feeling.

5. Death to My Hometown - The first of his Irish influenced tracks that reminds me of The Pogues.

6. This Depression - A simple beautiful dirge ballad.

7. Wrecking Ball - This is a high energized Irish folk rocker similar to The Dropkick Murphs as Crazy -Horse mentioned. Features Clarence on sax.

8. You've Got It - The Boss starting out with acoustic guitar on a slow ballad and finishing off at high volume.

9. Rocky Ground - I call this gospel soul at its' finest.

10.Land of Hope and Dreams - Another soulfull ballad that increase in tempo. Clarence on sax.

11.We Are Alive - Gospel ballad accompanied by a choir.

12.Swallowed Up (In the Belly of the Whale) - Stunningly beautiful ballad in the Irish folk vein.

13.American Land - A high energy rocker with the Dropkick Murphys/Pogues style.

This album has had mixed reviews...All Music only scored it at 3/5 and Rolling Stone Magazine gave it a perfect 5/5 ? ( what do critics know..the buying public will decide..Adele 21 only got a paltry 3/5 All Music review ..lol)

I'll go at 4.5/5 ...very good folk rock and traditional rock album !...Thank you very much Boss, well done !
