#439 - Gladys Knight And The Pips - Midnight Train To Georgia - 1973

running recap for me - 3's=32, 2's=22, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: Imagination
Written by Jim Weatherly
Produced by Tony Camillo
Chart action: #1 US, #10 UK

the players:
Gladys Knight - lead vocal
Merald "Bubba" Knight - backing vocal
Eddie Patten - backing vocal
William Guest - backing vocal
other people playing things

I always liked doing the Pips part. Originally titled Midnight Plane To Houston, writer Weatherly gave
permission for the change. First recorded by Cissy Houston. I just listened to hers and didn't like it.
It's the Pips. A year later this version showed up which became the groups biggest hit and got them a
Grammy. It was their first album for Buddha after leaving Motown. The group had been floundering since the
early 60's. Eleven albums later, this took care of that.

Lyrics

L.A. proved too much for the man
(Too much for the man, he couldn't make it)
So he's leaving a life he's come to know, ooh
(He said he's going)
He said he's going back to find
(Going back to find)
Ooh, what's left of his world
The world he left behind not so long ago

He's leaving
(Leaving)
On that midnight train to Georgia, yeah
(Leaving on the midnight train)
Said he's going back
(Going back to find)
To a simpler place and time, oh yes he is
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
I'll be with him
(I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world
(Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)

He kept dreaming
(Dreaming)
Ooh, that some day he'd be a star
(A superstar, but he didn't get far)
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true, oh no, uh uh
(Dreams don't always come true, uh uh, no, uh uh)
So he pawned all his hopes
(Woo, woo, woo-woo)
And even sold his old car
(Woo, woo, woo-woo)
Bought a one way ticket back to the life he once knew
Oh yes he did, he said he would

Oh-oh, he's leaving
(Leaving)
On that midnight train to Georgia, yeah
(Leaving on a midnight train)
Said he's going back to find, ooh
(Going back to find)
A simpler place and time, ooh, yeah
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
I'm gonna be with him
(I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world
(Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)

Ooh, he's leaving
(Leaving)
On the midnight train to Georgia, yeah, ooh y'all
(Leaving on the midnight train)
Said he's going back to find
(Going back to find)
Ooh, a simpler place and time, ooh y'all, uh-huh
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
I've got to be with him
(I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world
(Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)

For love, gonna board the midnight train to ride
For love, gonna board, gotta board the midnight train to go
For love, gonna board, uh huh, the midnight train to go
My world, his world, our world, mine and his alone
My world, his world, our world, mine and his alone
I got to go
I got to go
I got to go, hey
I got to go
I got to go
My world, his world, my man, his girl
I got to go
I got to go, oh
I got to go
My world, his world, our world, his girl

exactly Crazy mate...as we all know music is subjective however looking at it in a practical sense and not mentioning my favorite Elvis tune, Love Me Tender is his best recognised song ! And yes Suspicious Minds is definitely one of my favs along with many others !..what a voice and what a performer !!!!!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:strange both you and Music Head both said "elvis' siganture song"?????...i dont subscribe to that view, and always thought Suspicious Minds was his 'real' signature tune, but hey SteveO, each to their own...if you asked 100 people you'd get 50 different answers re:Elvis Presley

simply great classic soul from one of our generation's great soul men !!!!!
Music Head Wrote:#441 - Wilson Pickett - Mustang Sally - 1966

running recap for me - 3's=30, 2's=22, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Mack Rice
Produced by Jerry Wexler
Chart action: #23 US, #28 UK

the players:
Wilson Pickett: vocals
other people playing things

Never could decide which version I liked better, Picketts or the Rascals. I love them both. The Rascals
claim they recorded it first. Both being on the same label, Atlantic decided Wilson's got the single while
the Rascal's versin was a b-side for Good Lovin'. It was first recorded by writer Mack Rice, making it to
#15 on the r&b chart in 1965. This version went to #6 plus a crossover to the pop side at #23. Wilson
Pickett was inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame in 1991.

Lyrics

Mustang Sally, guess you better slow your mustang down.
Mustang Sally, guess you better slow your mustang down.
You been running all over the town now.
Oh! I guess I'll have to put your flat feet on the ground.

All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.

One of these early mornings, oh, you gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.
I bought you a brand new mustang 'bout nineteen sixty five
Now you come around signifying a woman, you don't wanna let me ride.
Mustang Sally, think you better slow your mustang down.
You been running all over the town now.
Oh! I guess I'll have to put your flat feet on the ground.

All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.

rated too low IMHO !!!! fabulous Zep !!!!!..listen to the hand drumming from Bonham !!!!!!
Music Head Wrote:#440 - Led Zeppelin - Ramble On - 1969

running recap for me - 3's=31, 2's=22, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: II
Written by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant
Produced by Jimmy Page
Chart action: non-single

the players:
Robert Plant - vocals
Jimmy Page - guitars
John Paul Jones - bass guitar
John Bonham - drums

Haven't heard any Zep in awhile. This one works. Most do. This is worth a love for the Gollum reference
alone. Jimmy Page says after reading Tolkien, he was inspired to move to the country. During the groups
second US tour, time out was taken to record this classic in NYC. The song was seldom played in the groups
concerts. I see where Train released it as a single in 2001. Didn't go anywhere, but it got the band a
major label deal.

Lyrics

Leaves are falling all around, It's time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I'm much obliged for such a pleasant stay.
But now it's time for me to go. The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain, and with it pain, and it's headed my way.
Sometimes I grow so tired, but I know I've got one thing I got to do...

Ramble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song.
I'm goin' 'round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way.
I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Got no time to for spreadin' roots, The time has come to be gone.
And to' our health we drank a thousand times, it's time to Ramble On.

Ramble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song.
I'm goin' 'round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way.
I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah.

Ramble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song.
I'm goin' 'round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way.
I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Gonna ramble on, sing my song. Gotta keep-a-searchin' for my baby...
Gonna work my way, round the world. I can't stop this feelin' in my heart
Gotta keep searchin' for my baby. I can't find my bluebird!

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 09-12-2012
