What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 09-11-2012 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Was sure this would come out a love, but it just misses, close enough. Got into Jonathan when I lived in Massachusetts back in the mid 80's, which is where he is from. About as garage band as you can get on this second album. Guitar, bass and probably just a snare drum comprise the entire album. With lyrics covering snowmen, insects, and martians, you can't say Jonathan was a deep thinker back then. Doesn't matter though as the stripped down music just makes you want to jump around. Jonathan claimed VU as a primary influence and moved to NYC when he was of age to try and get into that scene. Didn't take long for that to sour, and he went back to Boston to put together the Modern Lovers. Jerry Harrison was in the band and went on to be a mainstay in Talking Heads. The band never achieved other than a cult following but Jonathan stills plugs away. Thought he said this was the Woodface album but it's not. It's their debut album. Either they screwed up in the shipping department or the mate was mistaken. I'll go for the former. This was the groups biggest selling album here, with the hit and my favorite of Don't Dream, It's Over. A couple of tracks challenge that fav status and with more plays, who knows. Nothing I don't like on the album and it just misses that love mark. After the breakup of Split Enz this was Neil Finn's next project. The group was first named the Mullanes but label Capitol rejected that. Didn't know a label could reject your damn name. To be expected the group was most popular in their homeland of Australia with the album reaching #1 there, and a #1 here, #8 in Canada, and #99 in the UK. Single of that favorite track reached #2 here and #8 in Australia. Something So Strong was also a hit at #7 here and #18 there. Looks like for this album the singles were more popular here. The first time I heard them on their single CREEP I was hooked! To me they're a modern electronic Beatles. I think if you give KID A a try you'll be surprised . This is my favorite album of theirs. SOUND SAMPLES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7bIYSVpYSU - Idiotheque http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-7MeqSIj4E - The National Anthem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onRk0sjSgFU - Everything In Its Right Place http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mExWziqCwNg - Optimistic ROLLING STONE review: "In texture and structure, Kid A, Radiohead's fourth album, renounced everything in rock that, to Yorke in particular, reeked of the tired and overfamiliar: clanging arena-force guitars, verse-chorus-bridge song tricks. With producer Nigel Godrich, Yorke, guitarist Ed O'Brien, drummer Phil Selway, bassist Colin Greenwood and guitarist Jonny Greenwood created an enigma of slippery electronics and elliptical angst, sung by Yorke in an often indecipherable croon. The closest thing to riffing on Kid A was the fuzz-bass lick in "The National Anthem"; the guitars in "Morning Bell" sounded more like seabirds. The result was the weirdest hit album of that year, by a band poised to be the modern-rock Beatles, following the breakthrough of OK Computer. In fact, only 10 months into the century, Radiohead had made the decade's best album — by rebuilding rock itself, with a new set of basics and a bleak but potent humanity. Yorke's loathing of celebrity inspired the contrary beauty of "How to Disappear Completely," with its watery orchestration and his voice flickering in and out of earshot. His electronically squished pleading in "Kid A" sounded like a baby kicking inside a hard drive." CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:LOL....i just dont "get them", and i dislike "ok computer" more than this one if that is possible. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-11-2012 ![]() GIL SCOTT-HERON "i'm new here" cd,2010. hard to know where Gil fits in the scheme of things with music...jazz,blues,rock,pop,rap, you name it he did it!!!! this was the final studio album before his death a few months after it was released... mostly spoken word tracks, wow, this guy has the same vocal quality as Morgan Freeman IMO, very emotive, provocative yet serene at the same time... track two is a cover of a Robert Johnson song, trackfive is a Bobby 'blue' Bland cover, the rest are original compositions... the whole thing is bookended by "pts 1+2" of a poem, these poems/readings sum up the album perfectly, detailing a life of regret, one of coming to terms with his mortality and generally making peace with life/people he has obviously upset in the past... a very good album IMO, am certainly going to explore his back catalogue further on the strength of this one... I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: all the interludes(as they are wat too short) best track: im new here tracks: 1. on coming from a broken home pt I *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_VJrFZPTIo audio 2. me and the devil ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OET8SVAGELA video 3. im new here *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV_astp3BjM video 4. your soul and mine ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PycXonAR5xo video parents(interlude) 5. i'll take care of you ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXPN2dbgu5g audio being blessed(interlude) 6.where did the night go ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbZVdj_d62M video i was guided(interlude) 7. new york is killing me ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiuorrXsngM audio certain things(interlude) 8. running the crutch ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxng_bdF2C0 audio ive been me(interlude) 9. on coming from a broken home pt.II ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_8nxbeX9kI audio 3s=2 2s=7 1s=0 rating: 2.2 or 7.5/10 What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 15-11-2012 ^ a brilliant artist CH ! What Are You Listening To? - Frownland - 15-11-2012 I've always been a fan of Heron's early work, most notably Small Talk At 125th and Lenox. Definitely going to check out the album that you mentioned. Right now I'm listening to United States of America by United States of America. One of my all time favourite psychedelic albums. It uses brilliant electronic sampling and genre hopping that is incredibly ahead of its time considering that the album was released in 1967. The female vocalist has a gorgeous voice and the instrumentation is fantastic, not to mention that the songs are incredibly catchy. I love the way that they jump from psychedelic rock to big band jazz to experimental noodling so seamlessly that it doesn't feel forced (see Diablo Swing Orchestra if you want to see forced genre hopping). I'd recommend this album to anyone, regardless of your taste. 10/10 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-11-2012 for above two posts.... thanks guys, i will check his back catalogue out further.....
