What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 20-12-2011

I actually sat with these guys (without the makeup) on a short domestic flight in the early 70s ....they told me that they wanted to earn enough money to open a pizza joint in Toronto !!...why TO ..I dunno ! I sat with their manager,,a brother....he was listening to a huge cassette player...those were the days !!!...nice guy !!!!

KISS "hotter than hell" vinyl/cd, 1974.

KISS' second longplayer from 1974, and second album release overall.
possibly their worst seller, yet it is one of their very best albums IMO.
has a very raw, edgy rock feel to it and shows them still trying to feel their way into the recording processes.
Got To Choose, Watchin' You and Hotter Than Hell are still live staples to this day, two dud tracks on here, five good ones and three classic rock tracks IMO...
Ace Frehley actually wrote or cowrote four of these, yet didnt vocalise on any as a frontman...that job is left upto Gene and Paul, with Peter Criss chipping on on vocals on my favourite track "mainline", a song originally written by Stanley with intentions of palming it off to Rod Stewart, either Rod couldnt or wouldnt do it at the time so i guess they let Peter sing it with his raspy vocals.
this album shows how fast they were devoloping as writers because they were only twleve months away from recording their ultimate showpiece "destroyer"...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

QUEEN "greatest hits" cd,1981.

another bloody best of set Dani picked out...im not a fan of posting these as they are for the most part self explanetary...i'd rather get into a studo album and think of something original to say...but who am i to complain, i own the cds and they need to get played sooner or later i guess...this is about the seventh one ive done this week and there are still several more to do yet!
what can be said...its queen at their finest vocally, lyrically and musically prior to all the synth sounds they introduced for that stupid "hot space" album and beyond...
nine loves, seven likes and one dislike here...yes one dislike, that bloody stupid "bicycle race" thing, even Freddies vocals cant save this one for me to like, pretty hard to say which one i like best, as much as i like "bohemian rhapsody" it is not the best...too much studio trickery to say its my favourite, guessing that goes to the awesome power ballad "save me" from 1979's "the game" album or maybe another ballad in "somebody to love"...both powerful songs vocally, showing the full power and range of Freddies vocals IMO.
i have probably six studio albums by these guys, all very good IMO but a best of set really has the best of the best of Queen IMO.

album rating: 2.5

from the album, my two favourite tracks:

COLD CHISEL "chisel" cd,2001.

twenty track singles collection by the tough blues group that were, in their day, the equal to if not bigger than AC/DC here in Australia...bigger as in sales, fan base and live performance reviews....these guys were "it".
from the cracking debut 1978 single "khe sanh" which details the struggles of returned Nam vets, through to their swansong of 1984ish's doo-wopish "saturday night".
lead vocalist Jimmy Barnes had a bigger reputation here for hard drinking than AC/DC counterpart Bon Scott...was nothing for Barnes to down a quart of Vodka before a gig then swill down another during their performances, all of which added to their "bad boy" image, along with trashing the stage and instrumenst at the end of shows...
hard to say these guys sound like anyone else...a bit like John Couger's "scarecrow" sound but with a harder edge maybe??i dont know!
after their demise both vocalist Barnes and principle writer/guitarist Jon Moss had successful solo careers.
these guys have reformed on several occasions, mainly for charity gigs but also for a couple of fullscale tours not just here but also abroad...Mr.Soul recently saw Chisel in scotland and loved them...not sure if i put him on to them or he discovered them himself??!!,
also MH now has a copy of their most successful studio album "east"...looking foreward to his thoughts on that one sometime...pretty sure he will like it, but also that he can tell me who they sound like.
all up this one gets 11 ***'s, 7 **'s and 2 *'s,giving a rating of 2.4

Great recommendation from Tiggi - Anna Calvi s/t album ...reminiscent of a little bit of Kate Bush...she's a very good guitarist, vocalist and musician overall ! Original rock and laid back folky tunes woven into an impressive debut album ! The first track will grab you with her unique guitar stylings !

....also Chevelle - Hats Off to the Bulls - reviewed by Music Head...good hard rock from Illinois...the vocalist sounds British!...very good band !

Beatle daily ritual - The Red and Blue albums .......Songs from 1962-66 and 1967-1970 respectively !

I've met Bonehead once. He quit Oasis in 1999 but now he's got a new band called The Vortex. They aren't very known and they played in a pub in my town so I went to see them and then I had a talk with him. We talked about the Oasis split up for a moment since it was around 2009/2010 when we met.

Gary Puckett for me
in the service together in Korea
unlike Elvis he never revived his career after the service
