You can't defeat any group or movement without understanding all the underlying forces. In this case Judaism has nothing to do with it; the 2 main streams of Islam are going at it and everybody has conflicted motives. I don't pretend to be smart enough or enough of a wordsmith to explain it but Mr. Thomas Friedman is. Disregard this opinion piece at your peril--he lays it out straight and understandably.: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/14/opinion/sunday/thomas-l-friedman-obamas-strategy-for-fighting-isis-isnt-all-about-us.html

So perhaps what Friedman is saying, let them be , let them decide their fate! I agree...but that three letter word OIL always crops up! Get busy and discover an alternative energy source....all for the sake of our precious cars.

Yes, natch, there's always that but this runs to a soul-deep schism between 2 branches of Islam, each thinking they have The Revealed Word and determined to take whatever measures to defend and extend their beliefs (as this atheist understands it). The Sharia and Sunni branches of Islam are as unalterably opposed as the Rome-centric and Orthodox branches of Catholicity ever were and as destructively. This colors everything else about Middle-Eastern/ Arabic Islamic politics. Internecine wars are almost always the most brutal (witness the "Brotherly Love" expressed in Ireland, or the problems in Colombia) and this is internecine/intra-faith warfare for our Century. A ring-fencing idea won't work since Russia is Syria's patron and would never sign off. Drawing flow-charts on all this can make you crazy. That article by Mr. Friedman really deserves a second reading. One thing is for absolute sure: Simplistic solutions will make everything worse--be very darn careful what you wish for or even thinking this is a solvable problem but for future centuries.
About Westerners joining ISIS: All in favor. I'll contribute to their airfare. One thing though: they have to agree to a small charge attached to their heart that explodes if they ever, EVER, attempt to re-enter the West. Commitment is commitment, right? We're not talking about folks that joined one side or the other in the Spanish Civil War (that was merely a proxy war, after all). No, These aren't folks who just crossed over to another culture, they have deliberately joined the most brutal branch of that culture. I can forgive a lot about folks but this....Get back to me in 10 years.

It's just a matter of time before a world leader will emerge. Won't be one that will help us but he is coming just the same in the near future.

ISIS news story just on 9MSN website....

Melbourne shooting victim who attacked police 'brandished ISIL flag'

Police remained late into the night at Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills, after two officers were stabbed and a man shot dead.

An 18-year-old Melbourne man who met with counter-terrorism police brandished an ISIL flag before attacking them with a knife and being fatally shot, the Australian Federal Police said.
The Narre Warren man was invited to meet a Victoria Police officer and AFP officer at the Endeavour Hills police station on Heatherton Road in order to discuss his recent "disturbing behaviour", police have said.
He was not being placed under arrest and attended of his own free will, Victoria Police assistant commissioner Luke Cornelius said.
After travelling to the station alone, a confrontation between the man and the Joint Counter Terrorism Team officers began at about 7.45pm.
Mr Cornelius said the 18-year-old had pulled out an "edged weapon" and attacked the officers.
The AFP officer was stabbed multiple times and the Victoria Police officer was stabbed twice in the forearm.
The Victorian officer pulled his sidearm and fired a single shot, fatally wounding the 18-year-old.
"It's absolutely clear to us that our members really had no choice other than to act in the way in which they did," Mr Cornelius said.

Both officers were taken to hospital and are in a stable condition.
An AFP spokesman said current intelligence suggested the shooting victim had brandished a black ISIL flag prior to the confrontation.
However, police said it appeared to be an isolated incident and the man had acted alone.
They did not disclose why the 18-year-old had been asked to meet counter-terrorism officers, but said he was known to police and had previously been monitored.
A Victoria Police spokesman said during a press conference he would "face criticism" for revealing so much of the circumstances of the police shooting, but said he felt the community needed to know "specific groups" were not being targeted by police.
Police sources told Sky News the man shot dead had made threats against Prime Minister Tony Abbott who is on his way to a UN Security Council meeting in New York.
The special session has been convened by US President Barack Obama to discuss the threat of homegrown terrorism from western extremists.
It is estimated about 60 Australians are fighting overseas for terror groups in Iraq and Syria, with an estimated support network of about 100 more Australians living at home.
Last week, hundreds of Australian police executed 30 search warrants to dismantle an alleged ISIL plot to abduct and behead everyday citizens.
Australia's terror alert level has been raised this month after intelligence agencies captured chatter pointing to a domestic attack.

"terror/terrorist/terrorism" is finally here in Australia now, its not just "something that happens elsewhere" now....!

I do not know all the details around this but if this guy threatened people with a knife what does he expect?. In the USA and OZ at least they are taking these creeps out. The UK is doing absolutely nothing. You can't just bomb distant countries - you have to deal with the issue at home. And it is a BIG issue in the UK - make no mistake.
