BILLY JOEL "this is the time" b/w "code of silence" 1986

this single was off "the bridge" album,right?...i went off Billy around this time, have The Bridge on cassette somewhere, didnt like it!
"a' side barely makes the grade for me also, these sort of songs just dont sound like Billy to me..."b" side, dont like that one at all
aussie buying public didnt think so neither as this one stalled at #73 on the charts here...

JOHN FARNHAM "two strong hearts" b/w "its a long way to the top(live)" 1986

Aussie music veteran was almost twenty years into his career when he released this one...
i dont have much Farnham, always found him to be a bit to sickly sweet for my tastes, but the guy sure has a fine powerful voice...
this is one of his best IMO...
"b" side is a live cover of the AC/DC song, he does a reasonably good performance of it but nothing could ever beat their version!
single got to #3 on our charts, fair enough chart position IMO

SIMPLE MINDS "alive and kicking" b/w "alive and kicking(instrumental)" 1985

again, not a fan of these guys at all, but i guess i must have liked this back in the day...
could never understand why these guys were so popular(U2 are the same!).
simple...i dont like it or the stupid instrumental version on the back...i always felt ripped off when artists put instrumental versions on the "b" sides of their singles!
single made it to #21 here.

PATTI SMITH "people have the power" b/w "wild leaves" 1988

NY mid '70s punk rocker...
i havent heard "horses" Corey tells me I would like it, but not if its like this "a" side....
"b" side is brilliant IMO, a lovely brooding ballad, just dont get why that wasnt released as an "a" side of a single???
single failed here only making it to #87

ELTON JOHN "sad songs(say so much)" b/w "a simple man" 1984

"a" side comes off the almost forgotten classic "breaking hearts" album which is up there with his best efforts IMO...
"b" side is a ballad that sounds almost country-fied IMO, superb track that probably could have been a hit in its own right if released as an "a" side single!
single got to #4 on our charts and rightfully so, great song from a great writer/singer!

MOJO SINGERS "c'mon aussie c'mon" b/w "establishment blues" 1978.

in 1978 the sport cricket was evolving from a sport into a big money making machine, the rules were changing, they were playing at night, teams wore colours instead of the traditional white, balls changed colour from red to white, banned aparthied South Africaan players were allowed to play against the international sanctions imposed on their country...it was a time of huge upheaval, and it was made possible by media mogul Kerry Packer...
this single was a promotional tool for the 'new form' of the game and it worked, i was actually dreading hearing this song again because it was simply a singing commercial for the cricketing product...but i neednt have bothered, it is a pretty good lighthearted song and the "B' side still sounds good to me also...
you guys probably wouldnt understand this song with its references to Aussie cricket players or game references so you probably wouldnt "get it"
the catchphrase of the title is still sung by sporting crowds here to this day and has as much cultural signifigance as the "down under" song does in sporting circles!
single made it all the way to #1 here

MADONNA "who's that girl?" b/w "white heat" 1987

i used to like Madonna but not anymore...her music has dated really bad IMO

KISS "star trax-ep" 1981

a four track ep released to commemorate their first tour here, which incidently, was the biggest tour($ and audience-wise) in australia up to that point...
the tracks on here were their four biggest sellers out her so this was essentially a greatest hits 'ep'
i was surprised to find that this actually charted here and it reached #48 onthe charts...

MADNESS "uncle sam" b/w "please dont go" 1985

typical madness sounds here...well, they never did anything but recreate their sound year in-year out!
not a great so-called classic madness "A' side but still enjoyable, "b" side isnt too bad neither IMO
the video is still kooky-light hearted fun stuff!
single did reach the UK top10 but failed to chart here!

TEARS FOR FEARS "sowing the seeds of love" b/w "tears roll down" 1989

Uk duo who had a string of hits in the 1980s...
this was their finest moment IMO...very Lennon sounding circa 1967-ish, love it!
"b" side s an instrumental and believe it or not i actually like that one also...
single only made it to #14 here, i thought it got a lot highter than that but it didnt and it should have LOL
