Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 05-12-2012

not one of my favourite Elvis tracks, but reasonably good IMO...

Elvis got paid one million $US for his role here in the movie...was the first actor in Hollywood to earn that figure for a role in a movie

original movie title was "the reno brothers", then they re-scripted of for the young Elvis, gave it the title of a song and hey-presto the Elvis genre of movies was created...

now a bad movie by anyone's standards, let alone Elvis' standards...
of the 33 films he made in 14yrs a handful are pretty good(this one, king creole, jailhouse rock, loving you,g.i blues, wild in the country, blue hawaii included), the rest were simply a money making venture for the studio moguls and Tom Parker.

thanks for coming to Graceland with me mate, was the highlight of my life thus-so-far...was just a shame we couldnt go anywhere on Elvis Presley Blvd without having to go through bloody souvenier shops to get anywhere

as a footnote i have since discovered that "elvis presley enterprises" is the largest single employer in Tennessee and also the bigget source of revenue for the State ...amazing stuff for a hillbilly-hick electrician turned singer IMO!!!!

#443 - Rolling Stones - Beast Of Burden - 1978

running recap for me - 3's=29, 2's=21, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: Some Girls
Written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards
Produced by The Glimmer Twins
Chart action: #8 US

the players:
Mick Jagger – lead vocals
Keith Richards – guitar, backing vocals
Ronnie Wood – guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts – drums
Bill Wyman – bass guitar

According to Keith, this is the period when he was coming down off his years of drug abuse, and in retrospect thinks he wrote this song for Mick, for supporting him during those years. That makes no sense when reading the lyrics. I think I'll just forget I ever read (or typed) that first sentence. Bette Midler did a very nice cover of this song which hit the chart in 1983. Strange there is no UK chart showing for this. Was it not released as a single there?

Lyrics
I'll never be your beast of burden
My back is broad but it's a hurting
All I want is for you to make love to me
I'll never be your beast of burden
I've walked for miles my feet are hurting
All I want is for you to make love to me
Am I hard enough
Am I rough enough
Am I rich enough
I'm not too blind to see
I'll never be your beast of burden
So let's go home and draw the curtains
Music on the radio
Come on baby make sweet love to me
Am I hard enough
Am I rough enough
Am I rich enough
I'm not too blind to see
Oh little sister
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, girl
You're a pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty girl
Pretty, pretty
Such a pretty, pretty, pretty girl
Come on baby please, please, please
I'll tell ya
You can put me out
On the street
Put me out
With no shoes on my feet
But, put me out, put me out
Put me out of misery
Yeah, all your sickness
I can suck it up
Throw it all at me
I can shrug it off
There's one thing baby
That I don't understand
You keep on telling me
I ain't your kind of man
Ain't I rough enough, ooh baby
Ain't I tough enough
Ain't I rich enough, in love enough
Ooh! Ooh! Please
I'll never be your beast of burden
I'll never be your beast of burden
Never, never, never, never, never, never, never be
I'll never be your beast of burden
I've walked for miles and my feet are hurting
All I want is you to make love to me
I don't need beast of burden
I need no fussing
I need no nursing
Never, never, never, never, never, never, never be

I can't fathom why this song is rated so low !!!!!...sort of Elvis" signature song in the vein of Macca's Yesterday....obviously I love the song ...sheer vocal ballad perfection IMHO !
Music Head Wrote:#444 - Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender - 1956

running recap for me - 3's=28, 2's=21, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Elvis Presley, Vera Watson
Produced by Steve Sholes
Chart action: #1 US, #11 UK

the players:
Elvis Presley - guitar, vocal

No negative comments allowed for this one. His film debut also got him another #1, which became his
signature song. I visited Elvis's home when I was a mere lad, in single digits. Returned 50+ years later
with me aussie mate. It wasn't the tourist trap it is now, on that first visit. I remember it being
located in a rural area in the 60's. Now it's like a city in itself. Didn't know this song was adapted
from an old civil war ballad. The title of the movie was changed at the last minute to capitalize on the
popularity of the song, which was performed on the Ed Sullivan show before it's release. After that
performance RCA records got over 1 million advance orders for the song. Long story on the song writing
credit, let's just say Elvis didn't write it.

Lyrics

Love me tender,
love me sweet,
never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
and I love you so.

Love me tender,
love me true,
all my dreams fulfilled.
For my darlin' I love you,
and I always will.

Love me tender,
love me long,
take me to your heart.
For it's there that I belong,
and we'll never part.

Love me tender,
love me dear,
tell me you are mine.
I'll be yours through all the years,
till the end of time.

When at last my dreams come true
Darling this I know
Happiness will follow you
Everywhere you go.

strange both you and Music Head both said "elvis' siganture song"?????...i dont subscribe to that view, and always thought Suspicious Minds was his 'real' signature tune, but hey SteveO, each to their own...if you asked 100 people you'd get 50 different answers re:Elvis Presley

Not a big Elvis fan but the classic live version of 'Just Can't Help Believing' is the one that does it for me. Many moons ago a friend of my father's lost his batlle with cancer. His last request was to hear that track in his hospital bed. He died shortly after. Something that will stick in my memory as long as my brain continues to function.

And on a lighter note - the 2001 intro to one of his live albums was a stroke of genius. His drummer was a wizard.

#442 - Love - Alone Again Or - 1968

running recap for me - 3's=29, 2's=22, 1's=8
this one - **
from the album: Forever Changes
Written by Bryan MacLean
Produced by Arthur Lee, Bruce Botnick
Chart action: #99 US

the players:
Arthur Lee: guitar, co-lead vocals
Johnny Echols: lead guitar
Bryan MacLean: rhythm guitar, co-lead vocals
Ken Forssi: bass guitar
Michael Stuart: drums, percussion
other folks: strings and horns

Not that familiar with this one. I have heard it, but not when it was out. Missed some music during this
period, as I was serving overseas. Good song, more for the music than the weak lyrics. And what's up with
the word Or in the song title?

Lyrics

Yeah, said it's all right
I won't forget
All the times I've waited patiently for you
And you'll do just what you choose to do
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

Yeah, I heard a funny thing
Somebody said to me
You know that I could be in love with almost everyone
I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

Yeah, I heard a funny thing
Somebody said to me
You know that I could be in love with almost everyone
I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

you guys might be surprised but i actually prefer Elvis' 1968 and onwards period better than his earlier material, and yes Jerome the 2001 intro to his concerts in the 1970s sends chills up my spine...bloody awesome musicianship IMO
