What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 10-01-2012 ![]() :thumb: & Fela Kuti - Na Poi ![]() :thumb: What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 11-01-2012 ^I'm impressed Tiggi ! It appears that you are thoroughly enjoying the African Music compilation , the Christmas gift from your good wife! Any highlights or favorites so far ? What are the Fela Kuti albums like ? I've only had exposure to a few African artists and I'm curious. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 11-01-2012 ![]() HARRY CHAPIN "sniper and other love songs" cd,1972. Harry's second studio album and second release from 1972... from the sounds of the album either Harry or his record company decided to put all the 'great' songs on his debut album as there is nothing of real note on this one. sure it is pleasant but nothing really inspires me to say this is a good album... probably the best track here is "woman child", a tale of a young woman/teenager who has an abortion, then basically brushes it all off as a $200 expense!?! three songs just dont make the grade here...i have five of Harry's studio album and i cant recall three tracks i dont like over the entire other four albums... this is a real dud IMO! and double dud to youtube for not having a link for my favourite track here! I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: and the baby never cries best track: woman child tracks: 1. sunday morning sunshine** sunday morning sunshine harry chapin - YouTube audio 2. sniper** Harry Chapin - Sniper - YouTube live 3. and the baby never cries* Harry Chapin (And The Baby Never Cries...).wmv - YouTube audio 4. burning herself* Harry Chapin - Burning Herself - YouTube audio 5. barefoot boy** 6. better place to be* 7. circle** Harry Chapin - All My Life's a Circle - YouTube live 8. woman child** 9. wintersong** 3s=0 2s=6 1s=3 rating: 1.6 What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 11-01-2012 There's a brief description of his music further back in this thread (won't be far back, posted since Xmas). Favourite is a bit tricky, since his music is just always interesting. I think I'm quite drawn to lengthy music, as it gives you something to get your teeth into, so I find his long songs very satisfying. He himself is not a great musician - he plays keys, & sax, but is no maestro on either. He's not even a brilliant singer, but his band are incredible. Some links: V.I.P. DOH!...only one solitary link for this album I LIKE THIS ALBUM tracks: 1. mom and dad waltz*** 2. look what thoughts will do** 3. i love you a thousand ways** 4. always late with your kisses** 5. i want to be with you always** 6. she's gone gone gone*** 7. a little unfair** 8. i never go round mirrors** 9. the way love goes** 10.railroad lady*** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNc4YFUbZrs audio 3s=3 2s=7 1s=0 rating: 2.3 What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 13-01-2012 ^^ Have never heard this one Would probably like it (other than being covers) since it's actually country That's always been my beef with Willie. Just the fact that he is perceived as a country artist and for the most part is not but he does run a nice General Store What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-01-2012 probably should have mentioned...a lot of the tracks have a Hank Senior sound/feel to them. the link sums up the sound of the album pretty well as for a covers album, i dont know the originals so it doesnt feel like a covers set to me,which had i done so it would have adjusted my score probably. What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 13-01-2012 Thanks Tig! Great stuff and I like longer versions of songs also to sort of take you away to a different place !!!!...next project explore African music more !!!!! Tiggi Wrote: What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 14-01-2012 from my library (cd) ![]() A gift from a mate. Australia's Woody Guthrie, that's my take. Try 106 albums in his catalogue for starters. This best of set can only scratch the surface. Passed on in 2003 at the ripe old age of 76, which is when this compilation was released. Slim said his earlist musical influence was Jimmie Rodgers, which is another I liken him to. His first record was in 1945 at the age of 18. A later version of that is included here along with 24 other tracks dating up through 2000. Had to be hard to pick 25 tracks out of a 45 year span. I love near half of them and like all the rest. Sadly, Dusty's peak period was in the 1950's. Like most true country artists, the advent of rock pushed his style to the rear. Not to say he didn't have a following. Country fans are loyal. Even recognized by the Grand Ole Opry with an invitation to perform there in 1997. Don't think Slim was ever popular here in the states, but nice to know his accomplishments were acknowledged with that honor. Biggest hit was A Pub With No Beer I think, but my favorite has to be We've Done Us Proud. Got chills on that one and I'm not even an Aussie. Shut up, you guys will be old someday too. Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please, all them other Slim Dusty's are just imitating, the real Slim Dusty has just stood up. I LOVE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - I'm Going Back Again To Yarrawonga Best Track - We've Done Us Proud We've done us proud to come this far, Down through the years to where we are, Side by side, hand in hand, we've lived and died, For this great land, we've done us proud. I sailed the seas in search of freedom, I tilled the soil for seed to grow, I built the fences to hold the cattle, I mined the earth in search of gold. I sheared the sheep of golden fleeces, I formed the union, to win fair pay, I built a railroad to cross the country, I fought a war for the countrys sake. (We've done us proud to come this far Down through the years to where we are Side by side, hand in hand, we've lived and died, For this great land, we've done us proud.) I kept a home and raised a family, I taught your children as if my own, I painted pictures to show the beauty, I wrote the stories to keep the flame. (We've done us proud to come this far Down through the years to where we are Side by side, hand in hand, we've lived and died, For this great land, we've done us proud.) (We've done us proud) I worked the factory, (To come this far) I worked the land, (Two hundred years) I built the houses, (To where we are) I baked the plan, (Side by Side) I drive the highway, (Hand in Hand) I right the wrong, (We've lived and died) I reach for glory, (For this great land) I sing the songs, (We've done us proud). (To come this far) To come this far, (Two hundred years) Two hundred years, (To where we are) To where we are, (Side by side) Side by side.
