...And now we come to the most fraught subject in the English/Gaelic speaking world--how the vote goes Thursday in the Scottish referendum on independence. I'm 1/2 Scottish but so far removed, I don't have a horse in this race. That said, a "YES" vote has big repercussions not just for Scotland and the UK, not just the English/Gaelic speaking world but also the future fate of the European Union itself. It also may well destroy the current Prime Minister's political party--no small thing in giving great strength to various right/far right politicos in England. UKIP e.g. is one example To bring you somewhat up to speed with a human-interest angle is this reportage from a border town.: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/14/world/europe/scottish-independence-referendum-berwick-upon-tweed.html
The slide show which accompanies: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2014/09/14/world/europe/20140914-SCOTLAND.html
For those wishing to go deeper: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/15/world/europe/david-cameron-under-pressure-as-scotland-vote-nears.html Like him or not, PM Cameron (a Scottish name, don't ya know) pushed for heavy austerity measures to defeat the The Great Recession, to the UK's detriment and look what it's got him. After this debacle, dog-catcher in an obscure Northern Irish borough may well be a job out of his reach...

I thought it was ironic that the UK PM had a Scottish last name! We went through the same thing here with Quebec wishing to sever ties with the rest of Canada! French minority vs English majority....first referendum went 60-40 % against separation in 1980...the last one in 1995 was very close with the Feds winning by the slimmest of margins...51 to 49 %! Things have calmed down significantly since then. Quebecois voters are returning to the Liberals, Conservatives and for the first time the New Democratic Party!

As for the Scottish referendum all reports say it's too close to predict. I think they will remain in the UK by the slimmest of margins, 51 to 49%. I don't think the North Sea oil revenue can keep Scotland afloat economically for the long haul! The EU would be happy not to adopt them in their union....they already have two dead beat nations...Greece and Spain.

Another thing not much talked-about: Scotland has a strict no-nukes policy. As part of the UK, they have to tolerate that British nuke submarine base. Not so as an independent nation. And so where do they and the rest of NATO's nukes get put? Big quandry. There are only 3 Naval Bases in Britain and the other 2 show full useage with no room for nukes,: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNB_Clyde *.
Canada and the UK are by no means unique--the Catalonians want to separate from Spain, etc. etc. Gonna be an interesting century, this one.

* for completeness, here's the other 2.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNB_Devonport and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNB_Portsmouth << sometimes I even surprise myself with how anal I am...

Countries such as France are talking about joining in the fight against Isis but no one seems to be doing anything. I guess they are waiting on the U.S. as usual but we have No leadership. Kerry is dishing out a bunch of double talk like we are so stupid we don't know what is going on. Makes me sick!! Those people in Washington need to get on the Ball which is something they have taken their eyes off (sound familiar?)!! And that goes for both Parties!! Any country that is aiding and harboring these Thugs need to be hit and hit hard. Again, no ground troops!! Airstrikes!!

Kerry, Cameron & Obama are all weak. They are poster boys, not leaders. My favourite clown in the circus has to be Clinton and that ruthless wife of his. They take they cake. But a new leader will emerge that will take decisive action - they always do.

For example, Mussolini, Mao Tse-tung or Pol Pot...or Genghis Khan (how high was that stack of skulls?)
