#445 - Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog - 1969

running recap for me - 3's=27, 2's=21, 1's=8
this one - **
from the album: The Stooges
Written by Iggy Pop, Dave Alexander, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton
Produced by John Cale
Chart action:

the players:
Iggy Pop – vocals
Dave Alexander – bass
Ron Asheton – guitar, vocals
Scott Asheton – drums
John Cale – piano, sleighbell

Iggy in his prime, from the groups debut album. Didn't know VU's John Cale had a hand in this. Not much
there in either music or lyrics, but it was punk. Assume the song was a single but no chart action is
shown. A few covers, with Joan Jett's getting the most play. I see the Stogges were inducted into the R&R
Hall Of Fame in 2010. Must have been a weak year.

Lyrics

So messed up
I want you here
In my room
I want you here
Now we're gonna be
Face-to-face
And I'll lay right down
In my favorite place

And now I wanna
Be your dog
Now I wanna
Be your dog
Now I wanna
Be your dog
Well c'mon

Now I'm ready
To close my eyes
And now I'm ready
To close my mind
And now I'm ready
To feel your hand
And lose my heart
On the burning sands

And now I wanna
Be your dog
And now I wanna
Be your dog
Now I wanna
Be your dog
Well c'mon

Great song! Their best maybe.

I'm playing catch up on this thread.

Music Head Wrote:#471 - Cheap Trick - Surrender - 1978

running recap for me - 3's=19, 2's=8, 1's=3
this one - ***
from the album: Heaven Tonight
Written by Rick Nielsen
Produced by Tom Werman
Chart action: #62 US, #79 Canada

the players:
Robin Zander – lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Rick Nielsen – lead guitar, backing vocals
Tom Petersson – bass, backing vocals
Bun E. Carlos – drums

Certainly up there on my list, and I guess my favorite Cheap Trick song. Just the verse about a kid who catches his
parents making out and getting stoned to his Kiss records is enough to make me love it. I even love the live verion
on the Budokan album. For some reason Cheap Trick was huge in Japan. This is just kick ass rock 'n' roll. From the
groups third album. Surprised to see the album or single did not chart that high. In fact I'm surprised the group
was never bigger than they were. A great rock band. Problem now is they are still making music and they are no
longer a great band. But it was fun while it lasted.

Lyrics

Mother told me, yes, she told me
That I'd meet girls like you
She also told me, "Stay away
You'll never know what you'll catch"
Just the other day I heard
Of a soldier's falling off
Some Indonesian junk
That's going round

Your Mommy's all right
Your Daddy's all right
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, heeeeeey

Father says, "Your mother's right
She's really up on things
Before we married, Mommy served
In the WACS in the Philippines"
Now, I had heard the WACS recruited
Old maids for the war
But mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years

Your Mommy's all right
Your Daddy's all right
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, heeeeeey

Whatever happened to all this season's
Losers of the year?
Every time I got to thinking
Here'd they disappear?
But when I woke up, Mom and Dad
Are rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers, rock and rollin'
Got my KISS records out

Your Mommy's all right
Your Daddy's all right
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, heeeeeey

Away
Away

Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away

I'll speak for my generation again. I really like this song and I love the tone he gets from his guitar in the mellow parts of the song.

Music Head Wrote:#462 - Nirvana - All Apologies - 1993

running recap for me - 3's=22, 2's=12, 1's=5

from the album: In Utero
Written by Kurt Cobain
Produced by Steve Albini
Chart action: #45 US, #32 UK, #41 Canada

the players:
Kurt Cobain – guitar, vocals
Dave Grohl – drums
Krist Novoselic – bass guitar
Kera Schaley – cello

Never as big a fan of these guys as most were. Nevermind, a great album, after that just ok for me,
including this one. Second single, after Heart Shaped Box, from the groups third album. Written for wife
Courtney Love. May have been better in it's acoustic form as released from their MTV Unplugged
performance, this is the original. Grammy nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance, losing to Aerosmith's
Crazy, and Best Rock Song, losing to Bruce Springsteen's Streets Of Philadelphia.

Lyrics

What else should I be
All apologies
What else should I say
Everyone is gay
What else should I write
I don't have the right
What else should I be
All apologies

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married
Buried

I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything is my fault
I'll take all the blame
Aqua seafoam shame
Sunburn with freezeburn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun

[x2]
Married
Buried

Yeah, yeah yeah yeah

[x13]
All in all is all we are (All alone is all we are?)

This is definitely not my favorite song on Appetite. Welcome to the Jungle should definitely be rated higher than this one. Love the album overall though. Listened to it like crazy, I think Rocket Queen was my favorite but was too long to get any radio play.

Music Head Wrote:#459 - Guns 'N' Roses - Paradise City - 1987

running recap for me - 3's=22, 2's=15, 1's=5

from the album: Appetite For Destruction
Written by Guns 'N' Roses
Produced by Mike Clink
Chart action: #5 US

the players:
Axl Rose – lead vocals, synthesizer, whistle
Izzy Stradlin – rhythm guitar, backing vocals, percussion
Slash – lead guitar
Duff McKagan – bass, backing vocals
Steven Adler – drums

Second song to make the list from the debut Appetite For Destruction album, after Welcome To The Jungle.
Like this one about the same. I really think it's too long. Written by the group in the van on the way
back from a gig. Slash's favorite GnR song, probably because of his awesome guitar solo. Axel has cited
Hanoi Rocks as an influence for the band and guitarist Andy McCoy of that band says the guitar riff for
this song is a rip off of their song Lost In The City.

Lyrics

Take me down
To the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

Take me down
To the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

Just a' urchin
livin' under the street
I'm a hard case
that's tough to beat
I'm your charity case
So buy me somethin' to eat
I'll pay you at another time
Take it to the end of the line

Ragz to richez or so they say
Ya gotta-keep pushin'
for the fortune and fame
It's all a gamble
When it's just a game
Ya treat it like a capital crime
Everybody's doin' their time

Take me down
To the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

Strapped in the chair
of the city's gas chamber
Why I'm here I can't quite remember
The surgeon general says
it's hazardous to breathe
I'd have another cigarette
but I can't see
Tell me who you're gonna believe

Take me down
To the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

So far away
So far away
So far away
So far away

Captain America's been torn apart
Now he's a court jester
with a broken heart
He said-
Turn me around and
take me back to the start
I must be losin' my mind-
"Are you blind?"
I've seen it all a million times

Take me down
To the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

One of the inventors of the genre. Then stupid americans hijacked it. Not a huge fan of reggae, but I do
appreciate it in it's purest form. Not so much this one though. Once again it's the lyrics. I'm becoming a
stickler for those. This says nothing to me and the music just passes. This song appeared in the film The
Harder They Come and got the group some fans outside of Jamaica. Covered by the Clash, Robert Palmer, the
Selecter, and the Specials.

Lyrics

It is you, oh yeah
It is you, oh yeah
I said a pressure drop,
Oh pressure, oh yeah
Pressure's gonna drop on you
I said pressure drop
Oh pressure, oh yeah
Pressure's gonna drop on you
I said when it drops
Oh you gonna feel it
Oh that you were doin' it wrong, wrong, wrong
Now when it drops
Oh you gonna feel it
That you were doin' it wrong and how
I said when it drops
You gonna feel it
That you've been doin' it wrong
Now when it drops, drop
You gonna feel it
That you've been doin' wrong
Now when it drops, drop
Feel it
You make the wrong move
Now when it drops, drop
You gonna feel it
That you've been it doin' wrong
I said, pressure drop
Oh pressure, oh yeah
Pressure's gonna drop on you
Pressure drop
Oh pressure, oh yeah
Pressure's gonna drop on you
Now when it drops on your dirty little head
Where you gonna go?
It's you, you, you
When it drop on, oh you're gonna feel it
What you're doing is wrong, wrong, wrong
Pressure, pressure, pressure, pressure
I said a pressure drop

I enjoy this one a lot. I remember when MTV played music and he was on all the time. They even had a contest giving away a little pink house Smile

John Mellencamp - lead vocal
Larry Crane - guitar
Kenny Aronoff – drums, percussion
Toby Myers – bass
Caroll Sue Hill – vocals
Jay Ferguson – vocals

A definite love track for me. Inspired by what would be the opening scene in the video. An old black man
sittin' on his porch watching the world go by. I've been living that scene for quite a few years, so I can
relate. Downer to remember that the song was a mainstay on both of sleazebag John Edwards presidential
campaigns. John McCain used it briefly in his 2008 run before receiving a protest call from Mr.
Mellencamps people. It was pulled. Guess John's a democrat. Focus Ed focus. The song is not about politics
of course. It's about America, something to see baby, little pink houses for you and me.

Lyrics

There's a black man with a black cat
Livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate
Runnin' through his front yard
You know he thinks that he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen
Cleanin' up the evenin' slop
And he looks at her and says, hey darlin'
I can remember when you could stop a clock

Oh, but ain't that America
For you and me
Ain't that America
Something to see, baby
Ain't that America
Home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses
For you and me
Oooh, yeah
For you and me

Well, there's a young man in a t-shirt
Listenin' to a rockin' rollin' station
He's got greasy hair, greasy smile
He says, Lord this must be my destination
'Cause they told me when I was younger
Said boy, you're gonna be president
But just like everything else
Those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

Oh, but ain't that America
For you and me
Ain't that America
Something to see, baby
Ain't that America
Home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses
For you and me
Oooh, little baby
For you and me

Well, there's people and more people
What do they know, know, know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
Ooh, yeah
And there's winners and there's losers
But they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man, baby
Pays for thrills
The bills the pills that kill

Oh, but ain't that America
For you and me
Ain't that America
Something to see, baby
Ain't that America
Home of the free, yeah
Little pink houses
For you and me
Oooh
Ooooh, yeah...

#444 - Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender - 1956

running recap for me - 3's=28, 2's=21, 1's=8
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Elvis Presley, Vera Watson
Produced by Steve Sholes
Chart action: #1 US, #11 UK

the players:
Elvis Presley - guitar, vocal

No negative comments allowed for this one. His film debut also got him another #1, which became his
signature song. I visited Elvis's home when I was a mere lad, in single digits. Returned 50+ years later
with me aussie mate. It wasn't the tourist trap it is now, on that first visit. I remember it being
located in a rural area in the 60's. Now it's like a city in itself. Didn't know this song was adapted
from an old civil war ballad. The title of the movie was changed at the last minute to capitalize on the
popularity of the song, which was performed on the Ed Sullivan show before it's release. After that
performance RCA records got over 1 million advance orders for the song. Long story on the song writing
credit, let's just say Elvis didn't write it.

Lyrics

Love me tender,
love me sweet,
never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
and I love you so.

Love me tender,
love me true,
all my dreams fulfilled.
For my darlin' I love you,
and I always will.

Love me tender,
love me long,
take me to your heart.
For it's there that I belong,
and we'll never part.

Love me tender,
love me dear,
tell me you are mine.
I'll be yours through all the years,
till the end of time.

When at last my dreams come true
Darling this I know
Happiness will follow you
Everywhere you go.
