Born on this day ... - Ruby - 26-04-2015 Giorgio Moroder was born on this day in 1940, in South Tyrol, Italy. Synthpop and electronic disco hit pioneer, heâs known for his film scores and has also created songs for, and collaborated with, some very high profile artists: David Bowie, Donna Summer, Bonnie Tyler, Kylie Minogue, Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Daft Punk and Philip Oakley to name a few. He has 13 solo albums and 10 soundtracks to his credit, along with three Academy Awards (Midnight Express, Flashdance, Top Gun) and four Grammys. Heâs also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Soundtrack Academy. He and Harold Faltermeyerâs album E=MC² claims to be the first ever electronic live-to-digital creation (I tried to listen, I really did, but 80âs disco - well, it just won't work for these ears!). His discog - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Moroder_discography Two tracks stand out for me â this, from Cat People - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpdHMaccjw4 ⦠and this, from Midnight Express - Born on this day ... - Music Head - 27-04-2015 Sheena Easton - born on this day in 1959 in Scotland that would make her 56 2 Grammy Awards 1 Billboard Award #1 US/#3 UK/#1 AUS/#1 CAN in 1980 with this Born on this day ... - Ruby - 27-04-2015 Gordon Haskell was born on this day in 1946, in Verwood, England. Initially with the mid-sixties band, Le Fleur de Lys, he later joined King Crimson on their second and third albums playing the bass and singing. Whilst with LFDL, he wrote the song, âLazy Lifeâ, which enjoyed some success in the southern hemisphere; a cover here by Heart ân Soul (may be the first time Iâve seen a lead singer perform with their arms crossed!) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4YeQjrWzxo. He was a school friend of Robert Fripp and also contributed to Frippâs League of Gentleman around that time. Not wanting to compromise his musical integrity, and sell his soul, which he felt would have happened had he remained with KC, he slipped away onto the fringes of the music industry and in the early 80âs, left the UK for Denmark where he played, on the ground, so to speak (bars, clubs and cruise ships), in Finland, Norway and the other Arctic Circle countries for 14 years. In what are purportedly his words âI was in the wilderness for a long time. But I met a lot of really interesting characters in bars, and that's where my songs tend to come from. I was self-contained, self-supporting, and I didn't really have anything to do with the recording industryâ. He came to the notice of a much wider audience when he released his 2001 album, Look Out. It produced a No 2 charting single around Christmastime in the UK - âHow Wonderful You Areâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNhfdZe5njk. The man has a simply gorgeous, velvety smooth voice and what all his time paying his dues has endowed him with, is a real sense of authenticity. I am delighted to have discovered this artist! http://www.gordonhaskell.com/ There is a shortage of his earlier material on YouTube which is a pity â I like what I have heard of Hammond Hill very much (to purchase list ahoy!) â Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 27-04-2015 PAUL FREHLEY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1951, BETTER KNOWN BY HIS STAGE NAME ACE FREHLEY... That was my strategy too! Born on this day ... - Ruby - 29-04-2015 Klaus Voormann was born in Berlin, Germany on this day in 1938. He is a musician, artist and record producer with a mindboggling string of credits to his name. How long is this particular piece of string? Answer - http://www.voormann.com/biography/discography Closely associated with the Beatles and the solo work of George and Ringo, he met them during their Hamburg stint and ended up sharing a flat with them in London. He also worked with John Lennon, The Plastic Ono Band and Manfred Mann. He won a Grammy for the cover artwork for Revolver â the first time a graphic design had won the award and he has continued to be involved in design over the years â his designs also grace the Beatlesâ three Anthology covers. In 2009 he released his first âsoloâ album, Voormann and Friends - A Sidemanâs Journey, with contributions from many of the artists with whom he had collaborated. I found a nice clip with some samples â Born on this day ... - Music Head - 29-04-2015 Willie Nelson - born on this day in 1933 in Texas that would make him 82 and he's been that age since the 70's must be the good weed CMHOF in 1993 Kennedy Center Honors in 1998 his best album for me Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 29-04-2015 You know I love Willie Nelson, right? I have a few of his albums as you know and they are all very good IMO He's up there with JC,Kris,George and Merle IMO Born on this day ... - Ruby - 30-04-2015 Mimi Baez Fariña was born on this day in 1945. She died in 2001 at the age of 56 from neuroendocrine cancer. She was Joan Baez's younger sister. Singer-songwriter and activist, Mimi married Richard Fariña and the two wrote and recorded two folk albums before his untimely death as a passenger on a motorcycle, on Mimiâs 21[SUP]st[/SUP] birthday. Mimi later visited Sing Sing, with older sister Joan, which inspired her to form the non-profit organization Bread and Roses â designed to bring entertainment to those incarcerated in institutions, whatever their nature. She remarried in 1969 and continued to record, with Tom Jans on one record and another, solo, but after 1985 she chose to concentrate on the Bread and Roses project rather than continuing to perform herself. This is a clip from that visit to Sing Sing â Mimi joins Joan in the second half - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKQ-WzzQvyY And this is a beautiful song from Richard and Mimiâs Reflections in a Crystal Wind â |
