RE: Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 25-05-2025

PAUL WELLER  (67)

to summerise his 47 year career in a couple of paragraphs:

started in the music industry in the Mod/Punk band The Jam.
after his musical visions started to outgrow that band he disbanded them in 1982 at the height of their success in Europe/UK to form the innovative/experimental soul/r+b/jazz influenced group Style Council.
that band was basically a core of himself and keyboardist Mick Talbot and they brought in musicians as they saw fit not only individual albums but also individual songs.
a line-up consisting of those two, drummer Steve White and backing singer Dee C Lee eventually became the nucleus for the group.
the Syle Council had fairly good success around the world compared to the more UK/Euro success of The Jam
Style Council explored Chicago underground 'deep house' and 'acid jazz' music at the end of the 1980s and recorded an album that their label refused to release citing that "it would not do what Weller thought it would do" and TSC disbanded.
after a couple of years being a house husband he returned to the music industry with a more honest guitar driven sound and hasnt looked back recording 17 studio albums (with another due out in July).
his solo career has been even even more successful (album wise) throughout the world than Jam and Style Council, that said his success has been declining over the last fifteen years or so as his albums become more eclectic and experimental than what fans want and expect of his music.
that said he always finds a way of bouncing back and redefining his music so who knows what The Modfather has left....

a gorgeous love song even McCartney would be proud of:

Yesterday was the 61st birthday for one of the strongest women that I know of: Wynonna Judd.

God bless you and the legendary lady always!!!

Happy Birthday to Mick Box. longstanding lead guitarist of Uriah Heep. He was born on this day in 1947, in Walthamstow, East London, England. He is the only remaining founding member and the last survivor of the original line-up. They made some very good tracks way back in the days of proper rock, including one of my alltime favourites, "July Morning". Going with something different today ... "The Wizard" from Demons and Wizards ... when you know, you know!

SIR JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY   (83)

no introduction needed

interesting to note he performed 23 concerts last year to 1.15 million people,
that averages 50,000 per show and earning almost 200million USD in the process.

no tours so far this year but Macca is putting the finishing touches on a new album for release around december 2025

i thought i would pick a "deep cut" as a linked track instead of all the usual tracks we all know:

Happy Birthday to Graham Lear, born on this day in Plymouth, England, in 1949. He was 2 when his family moved to Canada. Drummer extraordinaire. Seriously – he is phenomenal. And having said that, quite possibly one of the most modest.

He started drumming at 8 years old, appearing with a symphony orchestra by 13 and touring Canada and the USA where Gino Vannelli identified his talent and invited him to play with his band. Mr Vannelli says of him "Some musicians transcend the appellation and fall into the domain of something called “artist”. That, Graham is.”

Having heard Vannelli's Storm At Sunup, Carlos Santana then set out to headhunt Lear, which he successfully achieved, and honestly, his solo on Moonflower, in “Soul Sacrifice/Head, Hands and Feet” must be some of the most elegant and precise drumming on record. It’s so incredibly musical.

Not a name that is bandied about all that much, but those who know a thing or two about drumming, know exactly who he is. In addition to the work mentioned above, he has also toured extensively with such diverse outfits as REO Speedwagon, Paul Anka and Canadian Prog Rock group SAGA. He has a passion for jazz and has also played with various jazz ensembles.

A solo from a Santana concert at Hammersmith Odeon, 1976. (It’s not Michael Shrieve although similarity in looks is quite remarkable! Definitely Graham Lear …)
