What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 30-12-2011 ![]() Hard copy. Debut album from 1988. French Folk (gypsy guitars, accordians & the like), given a slightly Punky makeover. Not as abrasive as the Pogues, or Gogol Bordello, but raunchier than the Gypsy Kings. Very good, although the lyrics are all in Francais... RoviMusic 4/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 30-12-2011 ![]() Xmas prezzie from Mrs Tiggi. 46 albums in a 26-CD box set. Despite the title, this isn't a complete set of his recordings, but it's as close as anyone's ever likely to produce. Fela Kuti was a Nigerian band leader, political agitator, Nigerian presidential candidate (nearly), pioneer of Afro-Beat, and a hero in his homeland. Over a million people attended his funeral in Lagos in 1997. These recordings run from the mid '60s, to the early '90s, and the music is African first & foremost, with influences from Jazz, Soul, & Funk. Most of his works are long (10 mins plus) grooves, with call & response vocals, sometimes in English, sometimes not. In order to fit albums to discs, there's no attempt at chronology in this set, but that doesn't really matter. To review 46 albums from the same artist, who won't be of much interest, would be a ball-ache, so I'll post up the albums with a thumbs up or yawn smilie: Open & Close ![]() :thumb: Afrodisiac ![]() :thumb: Unnecessary Begging ![]() :thumb: Zombie ![]() :thumb: What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 30-12-2011 J.J.D. ![]() :thumb: Underground System ![]() :thumb: What Are You Listening To? - evilB - 30-12-2011 Tiggi Wrote:Xmas prezzie from Mrs Tiggi. This set looks amazing! I had no idea such a comprehensive set was available. What a fabulous present from your wife. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 31-12-2011 ![]() JOHN FOGERTY "the blue ridge rangers" cd. cant be bothered writing about this one after the She & Him debarcle earlier so review is from amazon.com This review is from: The Blue Ridge Rangers (Audio CD) Country music's relationship with pop and rock music has been an uneasy one ever since the dawn of rock'n'roll, itself a mix of R+B and country music. During the sixties, several major pop singers had major hits with pop covers of country songs, Tom Jones and Ray Charles among them. Later, we saw the rise of another hybrid music - country-rock, of which the Eagles were the most successful, though as their music evolved, the country element disappeared. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, another country-rock group, surprised everybody by recording a bluegrass album (Will the circle be unbroken), that is now regarded as a classic and rightly so. Meanwhile, John Fogerty, former leader and songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival, chose to record an album of traditional country songs, mainly comprising songs that have been frequently covered by country singers. This is that album. You will probably recognize some of these songs via the original or other cover versions. Of course, I expect that everybody is familiar with Jambalaya, a Hank Williams song that has been recorded by countless singers in several genres of music. John's version made the top twenty in the American singles charts. In Britain, Jambalaya is generally associated with the Carpenters who had a big UK hit with it. Their recording was never released as a single in the USA, presumably because John Fogerty's hit was too recent. Apart from Jambalaya, country music fans will recognize She thinks I still care (George Jones), California blues (Jimmie Rodgers), Please help me I'm falling (Hank Locklin), I ain't never (Webb Pierce) and Today I started loving you again (Merle Haggard), each given the John Fogerty treatment. There are also a couple of gospel classics (Working on a building, Have thine own way Lord) and some other traditional songs. all songs on here get a ** rating, thus the album score is 2.0 What Are You Listening To? - mtthwibrahim - 01-01-2012 Corky's Debt to His Father-Mayo Thompson Mayo Thompson was originally the mastermind behind the avant garde psych group the Red Krayola. Here he takes on very off kilter folk. It's really really good, but definitely not for everyone What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 01-01-2012 evilB Wrote:This set looks amazing! What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 01-01-2012 ![]() :thumb: What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-01-2012 ![]() :thumb: 78 minutes. Only 3 tracks !! What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-01-2012 ![]() UK Folk-Rock band's third album, from 1969. The songs, sung by Sandy Denny, are the stars here. The music's fine too, but Sandy's voice is to die for... So much talent in one band. They managed to desecrate a Dylan song (If You Gotta go, go Now) by singing it in French, and even that works !! A natural fit for the Buy List. RoviMusic 5/5 stars. |
