John Miles was born on this day in 1949. Powerful vocal chords this man has, which don’t seem to have dissipated all that much over time. He is also an accomplished guitarist and pianist/organist. He is best known for his 1976 hit single “Music” which appeared on the album Rebel (produced by Alan Parsons) and which he still sings annually at the Night of the Proms events that are held across Europe and the USA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-oqZz7Z-pU

In addition to his ten solo albums, he worked closely with Alan Parsons, contributing lead vocals on a number of APP tracks, and up until 2009, he toured extensively with Tina Turner as her music director (and taking to the stage with her on occasion).

Here’s a lovely ballad from Stranger in the City …

Happy Birthday to virtuoso guitarist - John Williams.

Born in Australia in 1941, he moved to the UK as a young boy and was the fortunate recipient of tutelage (at the age of eleven, during his summer breaks) under none other than Andrés Segovia. He attended the Royal College of Music in London where he had to learn piano since there was no guitar department at that time. His technique is said to be technically almost flawless, and I should hope so, given his mentorship by one of the greatest guitar maestros of our time!

He is primarily a classical guitarist but was instrumental (pun intended) as a member of the classical/prog crossover group Sky, and he’s worked with a range of artists covering diverse disciplines and styles, from Flamenco to Pete Townshend, for example.

With Sky - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsWf0P71clA

… and last, but not least, he’s the guitarist on this one, which might be a bit more familiar …

Dereck William Dick, or ‘Fish’ as he is better (and more happily) known, was born on this day in Midlothian, Scotland in 1958.

He joined Marillion in 1981, contributing greatly to their early success with his larger than life presence, gorgeous, rich lyrics and a vocal style which some say resembles that of Peter Gabriel. I can certainly hear clear influences from PG and others. The sterner critics say he does not have his own voice - a matter of opinion. He is highly literate, was always a voracious reader and is a respected lyricist with a poetic turn of phrase; the musical composition is mostly left up to others in his entourage, and he certainly knows how to surround himself with some of the best in the business.

Fish was the frontman for Marillion up until 1988 when he left to go solo. His diehard fans will say the band hasn’t lived up to expectation since. Personally, I beg to differ on that score; however, to focus on the big Fish, he has some very creditable albums to his own name. He also has a record company, ‘Chocolate Frog Records’, has dabbled in acting, and was involved in broadcasting for a while.

I love his “Plague of Ghosts” suite from 1999’s Raingods with Zippos; it’s a great album, altogether, from Mickey Simmonds’ magical piano work to Steven Wilson’s guitar. And especially for those who like genre labels (lol!) – I guess neo-prog is the best description of this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaKFCYGoTqc

His debut solo album, Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, is wonderful too - he likes to tackle issues - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COqZM9YktMs
