What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 27-09-2011

Rick Wakeman - Live at Hammersmith Odeon. His version of 'Arthur' on this is absolutely stunning. To be followed by his 'Art in Music' trilogy. Can't say I am mad about this one but thought I would give it a spin - triple CD set. What I call 'fridge magnet music'. It sticks but you never really examine it properly.

Son-In-Law is a big fan (3 concerts). I never reached the big stage but I do like a lot of his work. In fact this album came in a little higher than I expected. Jimmy was always one of those hard to place artists. The album actually place higher on the country chart at #35 than overall at #59. Couldn't really find much country on here though. Not what I call country anyway. About the time I fell out of touch with what the masses called country. This is Jimmy's 13th album. The parrotheads were still there, but a bit of a letdown for them I would think. Some covers thrown in with the most notable being a credible Brown Eyed Girl. Buffett's first try at producing his own work, with some help from Mike Utley. The album previous to this, Somewhere Over China, is where I dropped out. I think this one is better, so maybe I should have hung on. The title track and Brown Eyed Girl were released as singles, with not much success.

Worst Track - Livin' It Up

Best Track - We Are The People Our Parents Warned Us About

I was supposed to have been a Jesuit priest or a Naval Academy grad
That was the way that my parents perceived me
Those were the plans that they had
But I couldn't fit the part too dumb or too smart
Ain't it funny how we all turned out
I guess we are the people our parents warned us about

You know I coulda worked the rigs when the money was big
Or hopped a freighter south to Trinidad
And when they tried to draft me I earned a college degree
Buyin' time 'til things were not so bad
But then I got a guitar found a job in a bar
Playin' acid rock 'til I was numb
Tell me where are the flashbacks they all warned us would come

Chorus:
We are the people, they couldn't figure out
We are the people our parents warned us about

Hey hey, Gardner McKay
Take us on the Leaky Tiki with you
Clear skies bound for Shanghai
Sailing cross the ocean blue (do do do dooo)
So blue (do do do dooo OOOH)
(do do do dooo)
(do do do dooo OOOH)

Now I got quarters in my loafers tryin' to fight inflation
When it only used to take a cent
Sometimes I wish I was back in my crashpad days
'Fore I knew what cash flow meant

Seems everybody's joggin' or heavy into health shit
Don't tell me that I ought to get rolfed
'Cause I love cajun martinis and playin' afternoon golf

Chorus:
We are the people there isn't any doubt
We are the people they still can't figure out
We are the people who love to sing "Twist and Shout"
SHAKE IT UP BABY

We are the people our parents warned us about (do do do dooo)
Id'n' any doubt (do do do dooo OOOH)
Hey hey hey (do do do dooo)
Gardner McKay (do do do dooo, Gardner McKay)
(do do do dooo)
I wanna sail away today (do do do dooo OOOH)
Isn't any doubt (do do do dooo)
They warned us about (do do do dooo OOOH)
Hey hey hey (do do do dooo)
C'mon now Gardner McKay (do do do dooo OOOH)
I wanna sail away today

Jumped ahead about 20 years from the last Buffett to pick up with this 27th album. Wonder if he'll stick around. Still sellig some music, with this one going gold and making #4 on the pop and #1 country. Still don't get the country, but whatever, he should have a Caribbean pop chart. Best thing on here for me is the leadoff Bama Breeze. Song about a bar Jimmy used to frequent back in the day, back when he had roots. He's ripped them up now to live wherever he chooses. One other great track with Cinco De Mayo In Memphis, with all the others being good. Jimmy has resorted to mostly covers for this one, with only 3 tracks showing writing credits. Title track is a Crowded House cover which is the worst thing here for me. Good song but just doesn't seem to fit with standard expected Buffett. Some artists just can't shake that pigeon hole.

Worst Track - Weather With You

Best Track - Bama Breeze

At the Bama Breeze
You can shoot some pool down there
You can act a fool down there
You can play it cool down there

At the Bama Breeze
You can drink some beer down there
Argue, laugh, and cheer down there
Pass another year down there

Jimmy got caught smoking a joint
Out behind the bar
Sittin' in his car
And they took him to jail
The tip jar paid his bail

In 1984 Mick Jagger
Passed through town
Bought the house a round
Signed his name on the wall
In the Ladies bathroom stall... yeah

At the Bama Breeze
I turned 21 down there
Had too much fun down there
Stumbled out with the sun down there

Saturday Night the Bouncer Grady
Lets the ladies in free with the fake I.D
And the short-enough skirt
Yea figures what the hell could it hurt

Second set the owner Lulu
Get's up with the band
A beer in her hand
And sings "Freebird" slow
Then she raises a toast
Here's to Ronnie and the boys
Now everybody make some noise!

At the Bama Breeze
You're one of our own down there
You never drink alone down there
Good God I feel at home down there

At the Bama Breeze
You're one of our own down there
You never drink alone down there
Good God I feel at home down there

from my son-in-law (cd)

Done with my Buffett explorations for now. Son-in-law was unsuccessful in converting me to be a big fan. Jimmy's just ok recently. His candle burned out long ago. This is his most recent album, the 28th in his run. Didn't show up on the country charts for this one, but a respectable #17 in the overall. No charting singles shown. Jimmy went back to his own tunes for this one, penning nine of the twelve. A Bruce Cockburn and Jesse Winchester cover included. He also did one of Jesse's on his last album. Must be a fan. Don't care for the first track here, but the worst is what comes across as a failed rap attempt on Turn Up The Heat And Chill The Rose. That was bad. Best is the laid back Beautiful Swimmers with A Lot To Drink About the runner up.

Worst Track - Turn Up The Heat And Chill The Rose

Best Track - Beautiful Swimmers

Marilyn Monroe did a night shoot in a pool
Posing naked for a playboy spread
She was old, but she still was cool
When they wrapped right after midnight
And the crew went to the bar
Norma Jean just did the backstroke
Like she was reaching for a fallen star

Chorus:
Beautiful Swimmers they know how to move
Sliding cross the water like a steel guitar
Beautiful Swimmers stay in the groove
Riding constant currents near and far

Standing in a tidal pool just east of Baltimore
Watching little blue crabs navigate the eastern shore
Every bayou stream and river in time runs to the sea
Every flounder, tadpole, and softshell feels the choreography

There all Beautiful Swimmers who know how to move
Sneaking pass the draggers and the oyster bars
Beautiful Swimmers just feel the groove
Painting liquid brush strokes like renoir

I miss my dorsal fin, I'm a big fish out of water
Dwellin' on the coastal plain

Now If I was as rich as the agacon
I tell you what I would do
Buy every man, woman, and child on this planet
A mask and a snorkle too
Then I'd leave this big migration
Destination Chesapeake Bay
Then we'd splash our way around the world
Life is just a water ballet

Come all you Beautiful Swimmers who know how to move
Let's crowd across the water like a steel guitar
Beautiful Swimmers stay in the groove
Fetching constant currents near and far

2-discer live album, recorded in 1989/90, and released as their last non-archive live album, in 1990.

As usual, a fine selection of first class music, with some of the obligatory rambling jams.

I don't think you can ever have too many live GD albums...

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

Before and Science-Brian Eno

Brian Eno is a genius. There's simply no disputing that. In terms of pure innovation in the rock music cannon, he's only bested by Beefheart. But his music has never really been my thing. I've listened to "Another Green World" and "Here Come the Warm Jets" and, while I enjoyed both, I didn't feel they were as good as thet could have been. This one, however, is really impressing me

Others to check out - The Plateux(sp) of Mirror - with Harold Budd
Music for Films - considered by many to be his most influential work
Apollo - Atmospheres and Soundtracks - probably one of his best to date

If you like ambient music check the 'what are you reading' thread - there's a book called The Ambient Century' which is worth exploring.
