What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 29-01-2012 SteveO Wrote:JON ANDERSON and VANGELIS - The Friends of Mr. Cairo Hey Steve, who is playing on this? It's certainly not Jon or Vangelis. It's a cover version. I have the original of this and it sounds completely different. And the lyrics are different as well. What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 29-01-2012 A great track by Vangelis http://youtu.be/GOwuniIgYXM What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 29-01-2012 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:thanks for the info Tiggi....had no idea PiL recorded and sold shows on cd at the venue....good idea to do so, i wish more bands would do it as a personal memento of gig attendances...i'd certainly purchase them if they did as its better than a t-shirt! I know this service is sometimes available. I've witnessed it once before at the Brixton Academy, but this is the first one I've shelled out for. The ConcertLive website, where some of the CDs are available to buy: Concert Live - Home What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 29-01-2012 You are spot on, Jerome !...thanks ! I have the First Edition of the album without I'll Find My Way Home even on it ! I added this to the mix to cover off both the First and Second Editions released a few weeks apart in 1981 ????? I didn't listen to it but it's listed by Jon and Vangelis on YouTube ?????? Also Dick Morrisey formerly of the jazz rock group If is tremendous on the album ! What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 29-01-2012 I have changed the album cover(First Edition) which is the one I own on vinyl and deleted the cover version of I Can Find My Way Home in my original post ! I taped the album on cassette years ago so I could listen to it in the car. I posted the wrong album cover (Second edition) release. Thanks again Jerome ! SteveO Wrote:You are spot on, Jerome !...thanks ! What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 30-01-2012 from my library (vinyl) The first of the three Pogue albums I have, and the best I'm sure. The inclusion of my favorite Pogues song helps that assessment, Fairytale Of New York, a duo with Kirsty MacColl. How can you not love that? Chills on that one. Five other love tracks, with only one bomb in the instrumental, Metropolis. Once I get around Shane McGowan's slurred vocals (lyric sheet helps), these guys do it for me. This is their third album said to be a departure from the previous two, with more of a varied sound, adding some Middle Eastern and Spanish folk to the Irish punk sound. Still the latter stands out on most tracks. Once agan I was shorted with my vinyl version, missing two tracks that were on the cd. This was that period where everything was released on both vinyl and cd, To encourage consumers to make that switch many times extra tracks were put on the cd and not the vinyl. I was among the last to make that switch. Call me stubborn. I LOVE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Metropolis Best Track - Fairytale Of New York It was Christmas Eve babe In the drunk tank An old man said to me, won't see another one And then he sang a song The Rare Old Mountain Dew I turned my face away And dreamed about you Got on a lucky one Came in at eighteen to one I've got a feeling This year's for me and you So Happy Christmas I love you baby I can see a better time When all our dreams come true They've got cars big as bars They've got rivers of gold But the wind goes right through you It's no place for the old When you first took my hand On a cold Christmas Eve You promised me Broadway was waiting for me You were handsome You were pretty Queen of New York City When the band finished playing They howled out for more Sinatra was swinging, All the drunks they were singing We kissed on a corner Then danced through the night The boys of the NYPD choir Were singing "Galway Bay" And the bells were ringing out For Christmas day You're a bum You're a punk You're an old slut on junk Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed You scumbag, you maggot You cheap lousy faggot Happy Christmas your arse I pray God it's our last The boys of the NYPD choir Still singing "Galway Bay" And the bells were ringing out For Christmas day I could have been someone Well so could anyone You took my dreams from me When I first found you I kept them with me babe I put them with my own Can't make it all alone I've built my dreams around you The boys of the NYPD choir Still singing "Galway Bay" And the bells are ringing out For Christmas Day 1) If I Should Fall From Grace With God *** audio - The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God - YouTube 2) Turkish Song Of The Damned *** live - The Pogues - Turkish Song of the Damned (1988) - YouTube 3) Bottle Of Smoke ** audio - The Pogues-Bottle Of Smoke - YouTube 4) Fairytale Of New York *** video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9jbdgZidu8 5) Metropolis * audio - The Pogues - Metropolis - YouTube 6) Thousands Are Sailing ** live - The Pogues - 05 - Thousands are Sailing (Live @ T&C '88) - YouTube 7) Fiesta ** video - The Pogues - Fiesta - YouTube 8) Medley ** audio - The Pogues - Medley - YouTube 9) Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six *** audio - The Pogues - Streets of Sorrow / Birmingham Six - YouTube 10) Lullaby Of London *** audio - the pogues lullaby of london lyrics video - YouTube 11) Sit Down By The Fire ** audio - The Pogues-Sit Down by the fire - YouTube 12) The Broad Majestic Shannon *** live - The Pogues - The Broad Majestic Shannon - YouTube 3's - 6 2's - 5 1's - 0 Grade - 2.4 so many albums, so little time What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 31-01-2012 ![]() Hard copy. Review comments from last listen: Johnny's solo debut, from 1978. Strong set of songs, rangeing through Garage, Punk, and backwards to Stonesy R&R. Another of Rock's casualties, at least he's left some good music to the world. AllMusic 4+/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 01-02-2012 ![]() CHILDREN COLLIDE "theory of everything" cd,2010. second album from these guys from "a land down under!"... not sure how i picked this one up, most probably another recommendation from Corey...he likes to promote Aussie music they call these guys "indi-punk" down this way...not even sure what "indi-punk" really means, but whatever, but they appear to be a cross between the heaviest moments of Blur and the lightest moments of Nirvana(thats how my man Corey describes them anyway?!). some nice indi sounds on here, but like most indi bands they dont seem to deviate from their sound too much or too often, which is a shame as these guys can actually write a decent song. nothing great on this one, only a couple i do not like, but the rest are reasonable enough efforts IMO. cant find any chart entries for these guys in either US or UK charts but they do deserve some recognition as they are,IMO, one of the better indi bands around. album reached a decent lower top ten placing here but sadly no singles managed to crack the top 30, they are, however, apparently very popular amongst the youngsters at the summer festivals around Australia and new Zealand... I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: jellylegs best track: complacency no vacancy tracks: 1. future monks ** Children Collide - Future Monks - YouTube audio 2. jellylegs * Children Collide - Jellylegs - YouTube audio 3. asleep on my feet * Children Collide - Asleep On My Feet - YouTube audio 4. my eagle ** Children Collide - My Eagle - YouTube audio 5. arrows ** Children Collide - Arrows - YouTube audio 6. fashion fits ** Children Collide - Fashion Fits - YouTube audio 7. loveless ** Children Collide - Loveless - YouTube video 8. complaceny no vacancy ** Children Collide - Complacency No Vacancy - YouTube audio 9. speed of sound * Children Collide - Speed Of Sound - YouTube audio 10.inventions ** Children Collide - Inventions - YouTube audio 11.into the sky with ivy ** Children Collide - Into The Sky With Ivy - YouTube audio 12.seven forks ** Children Collide - Seven Forks - YouTube audio 3s=0 2s=9 1s=3 rating: 1.8 What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 01-02-2012 ![]() Hard copy. Previous comments: Israel's third album, from 2011. Rootsy music (banjos & stuff), with vocals reminiscent of Ray LaMontagne. There seems to be loads of this sort of music out there, and much of it is merely OK, but this one has something about it. Good songs, well sung and played. I'd only add that Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth drums & produces, and reiterate that this is a beautiful album. Not scored on AllMusic. Worthy of a youtube link, I feel: What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-02-2012 ![]() Hard copy (Xmas prezzie from Miss Tiggi & her Hubby). Comments from previous entry: I was a bit concerned following MH's & Tracy's views, but this appeals greatly to me. I've always been a sucker for Kate's minimally accompanied efforts, and this seems - on first listen - as if it's the album I've been waiting on Kate to drop for ages. Suitably barking mad, this is a collection of songs concerning snow. A bit early for that here, but not in Canada !!. Definitely wrong for the southern hemisphere. The title track, with Steven Fry is as strange an idea for a song as I've heard for ages, but it works well IMV. The whole thing works well, in fact, and Kate's lovely voice appears still to be in fine fettle. Great album. All I'd add that is that this a bit of a masterpiece of understatement IMV. Plus the weather here is a bit more suited to the album now, with snow forecast for the coming weekend. AllMusic 4/5 stars. |
