What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 22-12-2011 ![]() JOHNNY CASH "american V, a hundred highways" cd,2006. finally a studio album in the player...by coincidence The Man In Black got randomly picked. this group of tracks was recorded in the months leading up his death in 2003, but not properly finished until 2005 by then longtime and trusted producer Rick Rubin... and he did a good job at doing so IMO, pretty sure this was the way Cash would have envisioned the finished recordings to sound. even though his vocals were starting to shake, he still had the ability to put his feelings into the tracks, making them sound as if they were written especially for him and his life in general. two loveable ones on here(a cover of Springsteens "further on up the road" and "love's been good to me) two i dont like(his final self written track"like the 309" and a cover of Neil Young's cover"four strong winds") eight others that are good cover versions. this gives the album an all up rating of 2.0,from memory MH gave it the same score when he listened to them on adrive from Florida to Kentucky earlier this year courtesy of Major Tim. from the album: the two best tracks. further on up the road http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25674XPNqmo audio loves been good to me Johnny Cash Cover - Love's Been Good To Me - YouTube audio What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 25-12-2011 from my library (vinyl) ![]() My cover is the original and does not have that tacky blue border around it. Looks much better. Wish the music was as good as the cover. Three great tracks but five that are unworthy of the artists. Never was as crazy about the Conway/Loretta matchup as George and Tammy. This is their second set as a duo. After a grammy from the first one, a second was sure to follow. The title track here was the only single and another #1 country hit for the pair. Liked it ok, but not one of the best. Best for me is the Twitty original, I Wonder If You Told Her About Me, one of those good old country cheatin' songs. Other greats are Playing House Away From Home and Back Street Affair. Hey, how come all the ones I love are friggin' cheatin' songs? Hope that doesn't say anything about me. Worst is the cover of Easy Lovin'. Never cared that much for the original. Cover of Never Ending Song Of Love isn't much better. Those three love tracks give the album a passing grade. It made it to #2 on the country charts and #106 on the pop. I LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Easy Lovin' Best Track - I Wonder If You Told Her About Me Hello oh hello fancy me and you The girl you have with you sure looks sweet But she don't know I'm talking to my old used to be And I wonder if you told her Yes I wonder if you told her about me It sure is good to see you It's been a long long time Don't think I'm foolish if I cry But I just can't hide the power of so many memories And I wonder if you told her Yes I wonder if you told her about me She's got you on her mind constantly But she don't know the reason why you set me free And I wonder if you told her Yes I wonder if you told her about me The party's almost over but let me say before I go I'm glad at last you found your destiny I told her that I love her and held her tenderly And I wonder if you told her Yes I wonder if you told her about me 1) Lead Me On ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6xUNzMCwoE 2) When I Turn Off My Lights (Your Memory Turns On) ** 3) Never Ending Song Of Love * live - Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty - Never Ending Song Of Love.avi - YouTube 4) Playing House Away From Home *** 5) You're The Reason ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykr_D1-kNZc 6) How Far Can We Go * audio - Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn - How Far Can We Go - YouTube 7) You Blow My Mind * audio - Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn: You Blow My Mind - YouTube 8) Easy Lovin' * live - Legends 2 15 Easy Lovin' Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn - YouTube 9) Back Street Affair *** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsgKTrfXFJQ 10) I Wonder If You Told Her About Me *** 3's - 3 2's - 3 1's - 5 Grade - 1.8 so many albums, so little time What Are You Listening To? - JTStephens - 26-12-2011 They are a pretty new band and I like them a lot too. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-12-2011 ![]() BILLY BRAGG "talking with the taxman about poetry" vinyl/cd, 1986. yes, Billy is "folk"...similar in a ot of ways to Woody Guthrie...both politically and socially, but also has the wordplay of Bob Dylan, especially on his earlier works such as this, his third album....Billy Bragg was the "dylan" of my generation, thus his albums always get high marks from me! i now view BB as a link between traditional folk and the modern crop of folkies that have emerged from the UK in the last four or five years. this album is the first by Bragg that feature other instruments than his electric guitar, and by doing so, it was as revolutionary in 1986 as Dylan going electric in the second half of the 1960s IMO. still, we get the sarcastic look at politics, greed, social problems, that BB songs are known for, regardless of your political persuasions, you have to admire Bragg for his convictions and articulate way he expresses his views on things that are important to him. big changes here also, in bt which Bragg also includes some love songs, mainly dealing with unrequitted love and lost loves... if you can get passed his accentuated cockney vocals and concentrate on his lyrics you will find this to be a great album. all up, i rate this one as Bragg's greatest album both musically and lyrically...it is also a 'time capsule' detailing the plight of working class citizens living under the iron fist of 1980s thatcherism! please note, most links are audio as Billy tends to update lyrics onstage to coincide with current political/social issues. allmusic rate this one 4.5/5 or 2.7 on the MHRS....and i pretty much agree with those guys on this one. I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: train train best track: help save the youth of america tracks: 1. greetings to the new brunette*** Billy Bragg Greetings To The New Brunette - YouTube audio 2. train, train* 3. the marriage*** Billy Bragg - The Marriage (CD Version) - YouTube audio 4. ideology*** Billy Bragg - Ideology - YouTube audio 5. levi stubbs' tears*** Billy Bragg - Levi Stubbs' Tears - YouTube live 6. honey,im a big boy now*** Billy Bragg-Honey I'm A Big Boy Now. - YouTube audio 7. there is power in a union** Billy Bragg - There is Power in The Union - YouTube audio 8. help save the youth of america*** Help Save the Youth of America by Billy Bragg with lyrics - YouTube audio with lyrics 9. wishing the days away*** Billy Bragg - Wishing the days away - YouTube audio 10.the passion*** 11.the warmest room*** Billy Bragg - The Warmest Room.wmv - YouTube audio 12.the homefront*** Billy Bragg - The Home Front - YouTube audio 3s=10 2s=1 1s=1 rating: 2.8 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-12-2011 ![]() GEORGE JONES "gospel collection" cd,2003. its country, its gospel, its George Jones... aint no other way to describe this twenty four track, two cd set by one of country musics stalwarts. had only head several tracks by GJ on the radio prior to joining this site...thought they were ok, but the more i listened to them via Music Head's links of albums he posted, the more i fell in love with his style and vocals... anyway, got this one on the Horse-Head tour somewhere between Nashville and New Orleans...most probably in Nashville being the home of country music and all! went into some little record shop somewhere and picked up seveal GJ cd's,MH said all would be good examples of his music so i settled on this one...played it on the road and we both instantly fell in love with it....so much so that MH now has it on order at amazon.com as one of his "end of year" treats for himself. some beautiful renditions of traditional gospel tracks here as well as some covers and newly written tracks...so good are they that its impossible to distinguish the old from the new.... if you like george jones, buy it!, if you like gospel/inspirational music, buy it!, if you dont like either, give it a listen as you may be surprised by it! What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 29-12-2011 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Damn, he looks young. Louisiana native with his debut album. Didn't get much attention with this one. Not hard to hear why. A lot of these songs were a stretch to even say I like them. Graded on a curve maybe (just because it's Randy), which gives it a barely passing grade. A short album at just under 25 minutes. Full orchestra on some tracks and some just piano backing. Best for me is the leadoff, Love Story. Kept expecting something to better it, but it never happened. Best known is probably I Think It's Going To Rain Today, which was released as a single and has received quite a few covers. Satire is present with Davy The Fat Boy among others. Randy wouldn't even touch the chart with this one. His best was yet to come.
