Jan Hammer was born on this day in Prague, Czechoslovakia (as it was known at the time) in 1948. He started playing instruments at a very young age – composer, pianist, keyboardist and master of the synthesizer. He was one of the founding members of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, has played extensively with Jeff Beck, led his own Jan Hammer Band, has worked with Santana, Al di Meola, Stanley Clarke – the list goes on! He composed several award winning soundtracks for film and TV (Miami Vice being one of them) – a most impressive discography - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Hammer.

I really like his solo concept album, The First Seven Days, which culminates very nicely in this – (instrumental jazz fusion alert!) …

Kim Stone turns 61 today. He is a jazz bassist, best known for his associations with Spyro Gyra, Rare Silk and The Rippingtons. He has also released at least one solo album that I am aware of and despite the fact that info on him has to be dug up (to the extent of having to sink a virtual mine shaft), he has a rock solid reputation as a highly skilled bass player. The only YT clip I could find of a track from his More Often Than Not, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uvY26wcCjQ, and some seriously smooth, contemporary sounds from The Rippingtons -
