What do you think HARD rock is? - RockRascal - 18-02-2015

The category Rock has for me moved quite a lot. Once upon a time, Beatles was the hottest Rock band, they revolutionized the music industry. And I have deep respect for them!
But nowadays I would not at all call them rock. The rock music has taken a harder turn and is much more aggressive than it used to be. My "wise" mother has often said that the music I categorize as regular rock, is more grunge rock, alternative rock and that kind. I don't know, maybe it is. Maybe I'm just wrong for thinking that a lot of what people call rock is what i call pop rock, or pop with electric guitars...

I had a discussion with a guy on youtube, we were among other things discussing Nickelback. I used to love them, very much. But they are not rock. On Wiki they are categorized as Post-grunge,
hard rock,
alternative rock,
heavy metal,
pop rock. I mean really!? Hard rock and heavy metal!? where on earth did that come from. I would say pop rock is the category they belong to.

So i don't know how much i will "trust" wikipedia, lol. Wink

Nickelback....
i saw them live a couple of years ago....
i was surprised just how "heavy" their sound was live...
they were really heavy, i said at the time i thought they bordered "hard rock/metal" as a live band...
they were probably the 'heaviest' band i have seen live...heavier than The Who,KISS and Neil Young's Crazy Horse

Wow what? I have never had the pleasure to hear them live, but there is nothing heavy or hard about their albums. But i do love Chad´s voice. Love the raw-whiskey-n-cigar voice he has. Smile

Well you definitely surprised me there... o_0

I tend to define each by which genre's they are influenced by. Instrumentally, Hard Rock seems to have its roots in the Blues (Ex- The Black Crows) while Heavy Metal has its roots in Classical (Ex- Dragonforce). Vocally, both share a tendency towards powerful singers who fall into the high tenor/ soprano range.

AC/DC - Rainbow - Deep Purple etc = hard rock. Metal is all those other nutballs that are constantly screaming, growling and making stupid noises. You can normally identify them by them album covers - lots of leather, metal, horror, blood and guts.

but isn't it strange that the bands you mention used to be considered metal?

Really! I would never have thought of them as metal as such. I don't particularly like metal. It's all the same screaming and wailing about doom and gloom. Not my thing at all. Even Black Sabbath at their worst I do not consider metal.

aw come on, Zeppelin was considered metal when they arrived
