Bill's RED NOISE (band) with a favorite from that early era , a reggae-ish , new-wavy thing with some nice burbly synths
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSgQ5aPRpzw I brought up Bill in regards to the OP because , amidst the myriad of styles he's done over the years, there's a lot of what might be thought of as ambient pop . A lot of melower, pop-like, sorta-jazzy, sorta-smoov, twangy rock-like stuff in recent years , and always great guitar work and richly layered pieces. The thing with Bill is, though, that there are over 100 cd's to sort through . Not all available, of course . It's a bit of an obsession with me. (obviously)

Thank you, ZeusMoose and Crazy-Horse! Holy moly, "Beyond these Clouds the Sweetest Dream" is *achingly* beautiful! I'm adding Nelson to my list of music I definitely need to listen to more of!
I find it absolutely fascinating that the ambient pop category can contain everything from Nelson to Bon Iver to Silvery Ghosts to The National, but then the boundaries of musical categories aren't really meant to contain artists, are they? The more I explore this, the more I think "categories" (while not entirely irrelevant) are more connected to the ability to sell the music to a particular audience, than an actual definition of what an artist or group does. Yes?

100% correct. You can't pigeon-hole music. It's just a general idea of what's on offer. The journey is more interesting than the destination.

In this case I find the video more interesting than the music. That's not to say the music is bad - it's just the visuals are really striking.

Yes ! Music that exactly fits a specific genre classification stahds a better chance of being sold ... and of having been manipulated and possibly compromised , in order to fit that genre.... in order to be better marketed. Music that's made for it's own sake and not for producers or labels or fans is more likely to be 'real music' . Not that this is a rule ; just that the system sets things up to happen that way more than I like.
