Totally agree about Dance of Eternity. It's the atonal/mildly dissonant keyboard solo that kills it for me.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of it, Nick. It's not my favorite album, but I like it well enough. It's always interesting to me to hear how people feel about Portnoy's departure. I don't know if you followed the boards during the time he was leaving, but it was really painful to watch his process of leaving. He knew it was time and that he needed to go (and the band needed him to go), but he didn't want to leave. His wife finally stepped in and drew the line for him after he posted a particularly painful public rant. I felt for him, but I think it was the best thing for him as an artist and for the band. Is it different? Sure, but I like the changes. Just my .02 cents (or .015 Euros).
Just out of curiosity, what makes Scenes of a Memory pt. 2 your favorite album, Nick?
Dream Theater - Big Ears - 13-11-2014
I like DT a lot, but I take them with their shortcomings, such as the poorly thought-out lyrics, Portnoy's spoken word vocals, the bass buried in the mix and their preoccupation with lesser bands. I have got the Dream Theater album without Portnoy, but I cannot help feeling 'no Portnoy = no DT'. He was the best musician in the band and his non-DT projects are good as far as I am aware, with the exception of Adrenalin Mob. I haven't heard the Avenged Sevenfold material. James LaBrie's solo albums are worth hearing if you are a DT fan.

Dream Theater was the first prog metal band I had ever listened to. Their album Scenes From A Memory is just absolutely incredible. Over 15 listens now, and it never gets old. And Images And Words is a pretty amazing album.

As in JustinJJustin's case, Dream Theater was the first prog-rock/metal band I ever listened to. I still listen to them and enjoy their music sometimes. Except for certain songs (Wither or The Shattered Fortress, for instance), for me, they've had great albums from Images and Words to Black Clouds and Silver Linings, with my favourites maybe being IAW, Awake and SFAM (admitting, however, that I don't like Systematic Chaos as a whole. A half of the album only.) I love all those albums since DT made the best of their musical and technical skills for making complex yet real and powerful music, which is for me a bit of what progressive rock/metal is about.
From A Dramatic Turn of Events on, I felt they've lost their way a bit (and I don't think it's only about Portnoy's departure lol) Don't get me wrong: they still can make good songs (some tunes from the self-titled showed me so, for instance) but they really have to take a long rest from touring and other stuff and focus on composing and only composing, without rushing, for getting the best of them again. In a certain way, Portnoy was right in asking for a rest (in others he didn't: he also wanted that time for dedicating it to his zillion other projects, for example). Opinions aside, I really like them and I've listened many of their albums hundreds of times, and although I can recognise some of their weaknesses (some of them mentioned by Big Ears, ââ¬â¹adding their excessive technicality and some 'half-baked' compositions in newer albums ), I think they are certainly worth listening. At least, in their older albums, they are.

Back when I religiously listen to Dream Theater day and night, I felt like their music tends to be heavily diverse from one another. The uniqueness of the song, the creativity in their composition, and in combination with the general vibe of the album really pushed them to the supergroup tier. However, as I listen to more and more songs after Dramatic Turn of Events, their sound tends to become stale. To be honest, if you just straight up randomly pick a song from the post DTOE era, I'll probably go numb for a while before making an analytical guess rather than being instinctive. Like when you listen to Octavarium, you can feel the grandness of the music. Its almost like walking through a gigantic castle ruin, desolate, endless, yet majestic. Compare that to The Astonishing, its hard to come up with something to sum up the feel rather than tedious.
On a side note, I never agreed with Portnoy's departure from the band, being such a vital role (last I heard he's touring with the twisted sisters). But now listening to DT, I gotta say his decision was way more sound than I thought. He made the call to initiate a hiatus for the sake of refreshing their creativity, let it expand beyond the realm of extreme musical showmanship. Thats what I think why I turned towards Steven Wilson for my go-to prog music. He tends to always stay fresh (though always with that dark tone of his), but the motif and creativity of the music is way more inspiring and accessible than the current DT. Hope they get back on track soon with their next album.

I listened to that one as my introduction to Dream Theater..I loved it from one solitary listen at Spotiy, enough to purchase it.
I then went and bought ive move albums...
